Return to Federal Citizen Information Center Home Page Keeping Your Vehicle in Tune with the Environment Car care is definitely a win-win situation. Besides helping the environment, a properly maintained and operated vehicle will run more efficiently, will be safer, and will last longer up to 50% longer, according to a survey of ASE-certified Master Auto Technicians. The following tips should put you on the road to environmentally conscious car care.
  • Keep your engine tuned up. A misfiring spark plug can reduce fuel efficiency as much as 30 percent. Follow the service schedules listed in your owner's manual. Replace filters and fluids as recommended. Check your tires for proper inflation. Underinflation wastes fuel your engine has to work harder to push the vehicle. Wheels that are out-of-line (as evidenced by uneven tread wear or vehicle pulling) make the engine work harder, too. Properly maintained tires will last longer, meaning fewer scrap tires have to be disposed. Every ten days, motorists who drive with under-inflated tires and poorly maintained engines waste 70 million gallons of gasoline.

91. Technicians’ Average Salary Tops $30,000, Tim Fritz, Brake & Front End, Februar
If we take a broader look at technician certification, we find that 32.3 percentof shops have no asecertified technicians; 20.3 percent report having one
http://www.babcox.com/editorial/bf/bf20234.htm
Earnings for technicians have risen from 2000, with technicians now making an average of $32,620. This is up from $28,487 in 2000. The shortage of qualified technicians has forced shop owners to raise salaries to keep technicians from switching to another shop that might pay more and have better benefits. The shortage of qualified technicians has also resulted in higher starting salaries for those just entering the automotive aftermarket. Technicians just entering the field can expect to earn $25,018 on average. This has risen from $22,576 back in 2000. In the same time frame, the most experience technician in a shop has seen his salary jump from an average of $34,398 in 2000 to $40,222 in this year’s survey. (Figure 1 shows the average yearly earning for technicians from 1996 to 2002.)
Respondents to this year’s survey report technicians’ wages being calculated using various methods. Fifty-eight percent of technicians receive a straight hourly wage or a variation based on hourly wages. The following is a complete breakdown of payment methods:
  • Hourly — 41%;

Choosing the Right Repair Shop
by Stan Adamick No matter what you drivesports car, family sedan, pick-up, or mini-van, when you go in for repairs or service, you want the job done right. The following advice should take much of the guesswork out of finding a good repair establishment. I. Preliminaries Don't just drop your vehicle off at the nearest establishment and hope for the best. That's not choosing a shop, that's merely gambling.
  • Read your owner's manual to become familiar with your vehicle and follow the manufacturer's suggested service schedule. Start shopping for a repair facility before you need one; you can make better decisions when you are not rushed or in a panic. Ask friends and associates for their recommendations. Even in this high-tech era, old-fashioned word-of- mouth reputation is still valuable. Check with your local consumer organization regarding the reputation of the shop in question. If possible, arrange for alternate transportation in advance so you will not feel forced to choose a facility solely on the basis of location.
Once you choose a repair shop, start off with a minor job; if you are pleased, trust them with more complicated repairs later

How to Become an Auto Mechanic
Anyone whose car or truck has broken down knows the value of a good mechanic. If you enjoy solving problems, working with your hands and earning significant income based on your skills and productivity, that mechanic could be you. Steps: Start preparing for an automotive career in high school by taking advantage of the vocational programs offered, both in automotive repair and electrical trades. Math and physical science courses are important prerequisites. Seek out apprenticeship and training programs. Because good, qualified auto mechanics are in short supply, many larger employers have excellent programs for entry-level workers. Note that some mechanics have started out by working in a shop as a parts-runner or a service writer and taking evening courses in auto repair. This is a good way to start if you are not ready to make a committment to full time trade school. Find out about the countless technical schools and community college programs in automotive repair. Look for those whose programs are specifically designed to prepare you for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification.

According to officials with the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), motorists can help the environment and their own finances by altering a few habits. So instead of waiting for hybrid vehicles, you can make a difference now. ASE recommends regular vehicle maintenance and better driving habits as two simple courses of action. Here are a few specific, easy-to-implement tips from ASE: * Keep the engine running at its peak performance a misfiring spark plug can reduce fuel efficiency as much as 30 percent. Replace filters and fluids as recommended in the manual. A well-tuned engine pollutes less and uses less. Moreover, neglected engine performance problems can cause costly repairs over time. * If you do your own repairs, be a good steward. Dispose of engine fluids and batteries properly. A single quart of used motor oil can pollute thousands of gallons of water. Anti-freeze poured on the ground can poison wildlife and household pets. Check around at local repair facilities to see if they accept used fluids and parts, or call your local government for information on proper disposal.
