CASE Certification
CARQUEST Technical Institute has earned CASE certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Continuing Automotive Service Education (CASE) is a voluntary ASE certification program for training entities that provide continuing education to working automotive technicians. The National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) administers the program and ASE grants the certification. "For CARQUEST Technical Institute to be deemed CASE certified is a great honor," Mike DeSorbo, CARQUEST national director of training said. "By being CASE certified, professional automotive technicians can be assured CTI will deliver the most advanced training in the industry." The CASE program offers a certification of providers of training for working technicians. The National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) will evaluate the training providers' process of developing and delivering training and then recommend certification as an ASE Certified Training Provider of Continuing Automotive Service Education (CASE). ASE certification for CASE is valid for three years. CTI is required to submit an annual report to NATEF which identifies any changes within the organization that have occurred during the year.

This program is based the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) national certification program for the certification of competency in specific skill areas. The American Council on Education (ACE) has recently recommended that individuals with ASE certification be eligible to receive college credit based on the specific certifications they have achieved. Because the Automotive program is ASE certified, we can award college credit for those courses that correspond to specific certification areas. For example, an individual who has achieved ASE certification in Brakes and Suspension System while in high school, will be awarded college credit for the equivalent course in the Automotive program. An internship will also be available to meet the work experience component of ASE certification.

A brief overview of our programs:

Automotive Technology Associates Degree: Graduates of the Associate Degree program in Automotive Technology are qualified for entry-level positions as automotive service technicians, service writers, and entry-level managers. Many persons already employed in the field use the program to progress to advanced technical or management positions, and to prepare for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification examinations.
Columbus State has one of the few college programs in the nation to be master certified by ASE. To receive this certification, the program was evaluated against industry standards of quality. To earn an Associate Degree, students complete 60 credit hours in automotive technical courses. These courses cover all aspects of
mechanical and electrical automotive systems. Students are able to specialize by selecting courses focused on their specialty areas. These specialty areas include the eight basic areas of ASE, alternative fuels plus service and parts department management. To earn the degree, students must complete 46 credit hours of related coursework (including communication skills, math, management skills, and computer literacy).
The program is designed to allow students to enter at the level most appropriate for their present knowledge and skills. Students with experience and/or prior training may enroll in technical courses to update and improve their knowledge and skills. Courses AUTO 061 and AUTO 062 are designed to prepare students with little experience for other technical courses. Students may receive credit in these courses by satisfactorily completing the courses, by passing proficiency exams, or by presenting evidence of ASE certification. ASE certification may also be used to earn credit in additional technical courses.

An ASE certification is issued by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, which is a non-profit organization that was established in 1972 to help consumers distinguish between competent and incompetent mechanics. The overall mission of the ASE is to test and certify repair and service professionals to ensure a high level of quality in the automotive repair and service industry. Currently, the ASE certifies about 415,000 repair and service professionals who work in every aspect of the industry: automobile dealerships, independent garages, fleets, service stations, franchises, and more. How do consumers benefit from an ASE certification? It is an invaluable way for consumers to measure not only the knowledge and skills of their repair professional, but also of the commitment to quality and a high level of service that the ASE certified technician strives for.

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence ( ASE ) is proud to be a sponsor of the International Automotive Technicians' Network ( iATN ). ASE was founded in 1972 as an independent, non-profit organization with a single mission: To improve the quality of automotive service and repair through the voluntary testing and certification of automotive professionals. The test questions focus on real-world diagnostic and repair problems, not theory. Upon passing at least one exam and accruing at least two years of relevant work experience, you earn ASE certification. Certification, however, is not for life. To remain certified, you must retest every five years. The ASE paper/pencil exams are given twice a year, each May and November, at more than 750 locations across the country. In addition, ASE offers Computer-Based Testing (CBT) sessions at select test centers during the summer and winter. The summer 2004 CBT session starts on July 19th and runs through August 15th. Registration opens July 6th and runs through August 9th. For more information on this special testing session, visit www.ase.com/cbt
