Calhoun Community College to Offer
Computer-Based ASE Certification Exams
Calhoun Community College announced today that it has been selected to administer computer-based Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exams. Testing will be offered in January and February 2004 at Calhoun’s ACT Center. A total of 20 ASE exams will be available at Calhoun in computer-based format, in three areas: Automobile/Light Truck, Advanced Automobile Engine Performance, and Automobile Parts. Having the ASE exams in computer-based form benefits technicians by allowing more scheduling flexibility – including weekend options. Technicians also get immediate feedback on their scores. ASE certification is a professional credential recognized in many automobile maintenance and repair positions. Today, there are more than 400,000 ASE-certified professionals working in dealerships, service stations, collision repair shops, auto parts stores, machine shops, schools and other institutions throughout the country. Registration for the first round of tests will run through February 7, 2004. Testing will be available from January 20 through February 15. To register for the exams, call ASE’s toll-free number – (800) 525-6929. For more information on the exams, call the ASE Help Desk at (319) 337-1433 or visit the ASE web site at

The CBT test format was developed in response to industry requests for more frequentaccess to ase certification tests, said Ronald H. Weiner, ASE President.
http://www.hutchcc.edu/acthcc/ase.htm
A pilot program to gauge technician interest in taking certification exams in a computerbased format has been launched. ASE offered 20 tests in three popular categories—including regular and recertification exams—through a computerbased test (CBT) system at more than 200 locations nationwide this winter. The next CBT test administration is scheduled in the summer. "The CBT test format was developed in response to industry requests for more frequent access to ASE certification tests," said Ronald H. Weiner, ASE President. "By offering this format in addition to the traditional paper-and-pencil twice-annual test administrations, ASE has greatly increased the availability of achieving certification." For the 2004 CBT pilot, ASE is offering certification tests for the Automobile Series (A1-A8), the Advanced Level (L1) and Parts (P2). (ASE will consider adding additional test series to the CBT lineup in the future.) ASE’s computer-based tests are administered at secure, proctored test centers, rather than over the Internet, as the integrity of the ASE certification process demands a more secure testing process than can be provided online at present. "One big advantage of CBT is the opportunity to take an ASE certification test on a weekend," said Bill Kersten, Sr. VP, Operations, ASE.

Automotive Program at NIACC Receives ASE Certification The Automotive Service Technology Program at North Iowa Area Community College has been awarded Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Certification by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF). The program, instructed by Greg Arrowood and Rob Heimbuch on campus and Mark Poppe at the Automotive Tech Prep Hub in Clear Lake, has met the strict industry standards in the necessary areas required for this national certification. According to Arrowood, the Automotive Department chose to seek this voluntary certification to further enhance the educational opportunities of the students NIACC serves. In a letter to NIACC President Dr. David Buettner, ASE President Ronald H. Weiner expressed his congratulations. "Although many educational institutions strive for it, only a small percentage achieve this certification," he said. "Both the educational and automotive communities should be proud of your commitment to quality automobile training programs." And it's also likely that you're discouraged by the thought of maintaining your vehicle. Today's vehicles seem too complex for your own backyard tinkering, and finding a good repair facility with competent mechanics seems more difficult than it should be. Fortunately there's a group that can help take much of the guesswork out of finding a competent mechanic. The independent, nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, better known as ASE, is dedicated to improving automotive service and repair by testing and certifying the competence of individual mechanics, or "technicians," to use today's terminology. ASE is the only automotive certification group that is both national in scope and industry-wide. It is self-supporting, with a forty-member, volunteer board of directors drawn from all segments of the automotive service industry, as well as representatives from education, government and consumer groups.

Print This Article By Gary Gabelhouse I remember the e-mail I received after the publication of last year’s salary survey in Certification Magazine. Despite the upbeat news certificants reported to us in 2001, it had been a very difficult year for all concerned—the IT industry, the publications covering the IT industry and the research houses measuring the IT industry. All were locked in an extreme economic battle—no use in denying it. The reader basically told me how the world had fallen out from underneath him, and he read with some disdain the “rosy reports” of how certification had resulted in bigger paydays and promotions. His job and company had disappeared overnight. Back wages, (401)k, company stock—all virtually gone from a once-thriving technology company. With the e-mail still ringing in my head, I surveyed the results of this year’s salary survey and saw that there was definitely some bad news salted in with the good.

Certifications
If you still assume your car is serviced by a grease monkey or Vo-Tech grad that lacked career options, your thinking is as out-of-date as a Model T. Auto repair is now a high-tech industry. Today's car has more computing power than the spacecrafts used in the Apollo missions. The "shade tree mechanic" is no more. Today's technician is in a demanding and rapidly changing profession. And to stay in a very competitive business, a shop must be operated as a business committed to quality service, control of overhead, and good customer relations. Consumers willing to improve their communication with technicians can ensure that repair facilities deliver reliable work at a fair price. A spirit of partnership speeds accurate diagnosis and saves you money. What do certifications mean? Since 1972, the ASE certification has been awarded by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. This independent, non-profit institute certifies professional service and repair technicians and parts specialists. The ASE tests are held twice a year and represent a real investment in both time and money for a technician. There are 42 different certifications. Only individuals with two years of hands-on experience are eligible for certification. Technicians who attain certification in all automotive areas receive the title of Master Certified Automotive Technician. The certification does not cover facilities, just individuals. However, a repair facility that has a Blue Seal of Excellence Recognition has 75 percent or more of its service and repair professionals ASE certified. To find such a facility, check online at www.asecert.org.
