As you might already know, there is no way to create the XML Comments file or compiled help files from any .NET language other than C# and J#. This application will allow any .NET language to create the same XML Comment file that C# and J# creates. By using this application, you will be able to give your applications full Intellisense abilities. C# and J# are the only languages that have built in support in the compiler to create the XML Comment file used by VS.NET for Intellisense information. XML Comments Creator brings the rest of the .NET languages to the same level by allowing them to create a correctly formatted comment file. All the features of the C# and J# comments, including validation, has been included in this application. Please see the documentation for a complete demonstration of the abilities of this application.

125. Xmlf90, An XML Parser In Fortran
Written by Alberto Garcia in the F subset of Fortran 95, freely available under the BSD license.
http://lcdx00.wm.lc.ehu.es/ag/xml/
An XML parser in Fortran
The xmlf90 package now includes a new DOM interface, and WXML, a library to write well-formed XML. Jon Wakelin has joined the development, and we use the strings module by Mart Rentmeester Features:
  • An almost fully functional SAX-like interface. An XPath-inspired interface for direct access to document sections, based on SAX.
  • A DOM API conforming to basically the full W3C DOM 1.0 specification.
  • Detection of malformed documents, with reporting of the exact location of the error. Support for handling numerical datasets Written in the F subset of Fortran (the DOM subsystem uses non-pure functions, though). Freely available under the BSD license.
Download the xmlf90 package An example of a "real-world" application of the parser is in the handling of XML pseudopotential data for electronic-structure codes. This work is the context of the FSAtom project. This interface offers full XML 1.0 validation facilities. Its only notable deviation from the 1.0 spec comes in its handling of whitespace, which it ignores inside of markup where syntactically irrelevant. Note, though, that this deviation from the spec has nothing to do with the hotly debated issue of whitespace in actual character data (in which respect this validator follows the spec). To use this interface to validate a small XML document, paste the document in question into the

Chapter 17 of the XML Bible, Second Edition : XSL Transformations
    In This Chapter
The Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) includes both a transformation language and a formatting language. Each of these, naturally enough, is an XML application. The transformation language provides elements that define rules for how one XML document is transformed into another XML document. The transformed XML document may use the markup and DTD of the original document, or it may use a completely different set of elements. In particular, it may use the elements defined by the second part of XSL, the formatting objects. This chapter discusses the transformation language half of XSL.
    What Is XSL?
The transformation and formatting halves of XSL can function independently of each other. For instance, the transformation language can transform an XML document into a well-formed HTML file, and completely ignore XSL formatting objects. This is the style of XSL previewed in Chapter 5 and emphasized in this chapter. Furthermore, it's not absolutely required that a document written in XSL formatting objects be produced by using the transformation part of XSL on another XML document. For example, it's easy to imagine a converter written in Java that reads TeX or PDF files and translates them into XSL formatting objects (though no such converters exist as of early 2001).

Start at the XML FAQ if you are a complete newbie. In particular, note that XML is a metalanguage, i.e a language for defining other languages. Another important point is that XML does not replace HTML. XML only defines structure and not presentation. In fact the latest version of HTML, XHTML, is HTML defined with XML (instead of SGML). Presentation of XML can be provided with XSL (XML stylesheet language) Benefits of XML - Note XML promotes data sharing only when an DTD (Document Type Definition) or XML Scheme is agreed upon. I think this is a major misconception of XML. People tend to think that using XML makes your data an open format. This is simply not true (however converting an XML format is easier then a binary format) and creating an easy to understand and logical structure is difficult. Java XML Application Categories and XML, Java, databases and the Web - Applies to any software developer wondering where exactly XML fits in For XML specifications, see the site
