What is it?
The XHTML family is a reformulation of HTML 4 in XML. It represents the next step in the evolution of the Internet. It lets you enter the XML world, creating content that is both backward and future compatible. XHTML became an official W3C recommendation on January 26, so when you read this you are on the cutting edge of it all.
Why all this? What is the problem with good old HTML?
We explored the shortcomings of HTML a while ago, in a nutshell:
  • HTML has a fixed set of elements, so it is not easily extended to different needs HTML was designed with the PC in mind, not taking into account the multitude of alternative platforms coming to the Web, like TVs, mobile phones and digital tablets. HTML is defined relatively sloppily, requiring parsers to be quite forgiving and intelligent in fixing problematic markup on the fly. This intelligence weighs in heavy on your hard disk with your favorite browser.

The VNet Class Library
Collection of useful Java classes, including an xml generator and a simple editor. Open Source, GPL
http://web.vee.net/projects/vnetclasslibrary/
projects > the vnet class library The VNet Class Library - useful Java components. A variety of free (GPL'ed), open souce Java components. What is the The VNet Class Library? The VNet Class Library is a collection of Java classes that I have written over the past few years for SWars. They are classes that I have found to be useful and have used in many another project. Other people may find them useful as well, so I'm making them freely distributable. Where can I get it from? Here, in the dist directory, but you may want to keep on reading first. Is there any documentation for it? Yes, the Javadoc API reference is included in both the distribution and here, online. A FAQ and other documentation may appear on this page, but only if you ask me for it. What is YAWB? YAWB is Yet Another Web Backend. YAWB is a dynamic content generator, that is to say it produces XML, HTML or other SGML-style markup documents with data supplied by a backend of some sort. YAWB also provides an abstract, uniform interface to a variety of backends. A backend could be an SQL DBMS, an LDAP directory, flat files or whatever. YAWB processes document templates on the fly, with data being supplied by one or more backends. It's pronounced "Yourb" and is fairly experimental at the moment. Problems with this site?

Proposed Technical Specification for Web Services Addressing and Referencing Framework.
In an open letter the W3C AC Forum, eleven major companies have proposed the creation of a new technical activity to bring about industry convergence in the area of Web Service Referencing and Addressing. A draft "strawman" proposal calls for a new working group that would have the participation of the entire web service community. The WG would produce a WS-Addressing and Referencing Framework Recommendation based upon WS-Addressing and WS-MessageDelivery.
Email Spoofing Targeted in IETF Draft on MTA Authentication Records in DNS.
An updated IETF Internet Draft has been published for "MTA Authentication Records in DNS," representing one of several current proposals aimed at design of mechanisms to reduce spoofing of email headers and delivery of (virus-bearing) spam. This specification relies upon XML infoset data items for a client authorization function and an Email Policy Document. Similar solutions are presented in Drafts for Sender Policy Framework (SPF), Caller ID, and 'RMX'.

About SAX
This is the official website for SAX. It replaces David Megginson's original SAX page SAX is the Simple API for XML SAX has recently switched over to the SourceForge project infrastructure. The intent is to continue the open development and maintainence process for SAX (no NDAs required) while making it easier to track open SAX issues outside of the high-volume xml-dev list. Project resources include archived mailing lists and a download area . See the Project Page link for full information about project facilities which are being used, as well as news announcements. Use the sax-users@lists.sourceforge.net mailing list to discuss problems that come up when you're trying to use SAX. 05:03 AM Jul. 08, 1997 PT The hypertext markup language, as we are all well aware, was an experiment that got out of the lab too soon. It was, and to a certain extent still is, a very simple way to describe a limited set of information for transmission and display on the Web. In the few short years it's been around, we've seen that various political and commercial forces have stretched the language almost to the point of breaking. So what's the next step? Well, what if you could merge the simplicity of HTML with the unparalleled flexibility of standard generalized markup language, or SGML? That's the idea behind the extensible markup language, or XML Wireless Hot Spot Directory Search for Wi-Fi hot spots near you:

XML, Java, and the future of the Web
Jon Bosak, Sun Microsystems
Last revised 1997.03.10
Introduction
The extraordinary growth of the World Wide Web has been fueled by the ability it gives authors to easily and cheaply distribute electronic documents to an international audience. As Web documents have become larger and more complex, however, Web content providers have begun to experience the limitations of a medium that does not provide the extensibility, structure, and data checking needed for large-scale commercial publishing. The ability of Java applets to embed powerful data manipulation capabilities in Web clients makes even clearer the limitations of current methods for the transmittal of document data. To address the requirements of commercial Web publishing and enable the further expansion of Web technology into new domains of distributed document processing, the World Wide Web Consortium has developed an Extensible Markup Language (XML) for applications that require functionality beyond the current Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). This paper [0] describes the XML effort and discusses new kinds of Java-based Web applications made possible by XML.
