What is XML-RPC?
XML-RPC Directory Specifications Implementations Services Blogging APIs Communities Tutorials/Press It's a spec and a set of implementations that allow software running on disparate operating systems, running in different environments to make procedure calls over the Internet.
It's remote procedure calling using HTTP as the transport and XML as the encoding. XML-RPC is designed to be as simple as possible, while allowing complex data structures to be transmitted, processed and returned.
The XML-RPC community

The implementations page lists the accomplishments of the community, a set of compatible XML-RPC implementations that span all operating systems, programming languages, dynamic and static environments, open source and commercial, for Perl, Python, Java, Frontier, C/C++, Lisp, PHP, Microsoft .NET, Rebol, Real Basic, Tcl, Delphi, WebObjects and Zope, and more are coming all the time.
The services page lists the next-level-up, public applications, or "web services" that are accessible through XML-RPC.

XML-RPC Specification
Tue, Jun 15, 1999; by Dave Winer. Updated 6/30/03 DW Updated 10/16/99 DW Updated 1/21/99 DW This specification documents the XML-RPC protocol implemented in UserLand Frontier For a non-technical explanation, see XML-RPC for Newbies This page provides all the information that an implementor needs. Overview XML-RPC is a Remote Procedure Calling protocol that works over the Internet. An XML-RPC message is an HTTP-POST request. The body of the request is in XML. A procedure executes on the server and the value it returns is also formatted in XML. Procedure parameters can be scalars, numbers, strings, dates, etc.; and can also be complex record and list structures. Request example Here's an example of an XML-RPC request: POST /RPC2 HTTP/1.0 User-Agent: Frontier/5.1.2 (WinNT) Host: betty.userland.com Content-Type: text/xml Content-length: 181 Header requirements The format of the URI in the first line of the header is not specified. For example, it could be empty, a single slash, if the server is only handling XML-RPC calls. However, if the server is handling a mix of incoming HTTP requests, we allow the URI to help route the request to the code that handles XML-RPC requests. (In the example, the URI is /RPC2, telling the server to route the request to the "RPC2" responder.)

Proposed Technical Specification for Web Services Addressing and Referencing Framework.
In an open letter the W3C AC Forum, eleven major companies have proposed the creation of a new technical activity to bring about industry convergence in the area of Web Service Referencing and Addressing. A draft "strawman" proposal calls for a new working group that would have the participation of the entire web service community. The WG would produce a WS-Addressing and Referencing Framework Recommendation based upon WS-Addressing and WS-MessageDelivery.
Email Spoofing Targeted in IETF Draft on MTA Authentication Records in DNS.
An updated IETF Internet Draft has been published for "MTA Authentication Records in DNS," representing one of several current proposals aimed at design of mechanisms to reduce spoofing of email headers and delivery of (virus-bearing) spam. This specification relies upon XML infoset data items for a client authorization function and an Email Policy Document. Similar solutions are presented in Drafts for Sender Policy Framework (SPF), Caller ID, and 'RMX'.

XML: Overview
[CR: 20000706] [Table of Contents] Several introductory and tutorial articles on the Extensible Markup Language (XML) are referenced in the shorter XML Introduction document. Most articles are accessible online. "The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is the universal format for structured documents and data on the Web." W3C XML Web site The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is descriptively identified in the XML 1.0 W3C Recommendation as "an extremely simple dialect [or 'subset'] of SGML" the goal of which "is to enable generic SGML to be served, received, and processed on the Web in the way that is now possible with HTML," for which reason "XML has been designed for ease of implementation, and for interoperability with both SGML and HTML." Note that the "HTML" referenced in the preceding sentence ( bis ) means HTML 4.0 and 3.2 which were in common use as of 10-February-1998, when the XML 1.0 specification was published as a W3C Recommendation. The next version of 'HTML' is expected to be reformulated as an XML application, so that it will be based upon XML rather than upon SGML. As of December 1998

1. What is XML?
XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is a simple language for marking up structures in text documents. It is based on an International Standard Standard Generalized Markup Language ( SGML) International Organization for Standardization ( ISO ) ISO 8879:1986. It looks like HTML . You can create and use your own tags and document structures with it. You can also use it for serializing from databases.
2. Who developed it?
ISO SGML orginally came out of IBM , but has had a lot of input from different companies. XML is developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (
