After years of (co)maintaining xmlsoftware.com, the site disappeared from the internet, much to my distress. James Tauber and I have been busy recreating the site from a recent RDF tree of the data. A lot of work is still to be done, but the basics are online again! We'd like to thank Barry van Oven (Linda's husband) for helping out with the design. Processing XML with Java
Elliotte Rusty Harold
Welcome to Processing XML with Java , a complete tutorial about writing Java programs that read and write XML documents. This is the most comprehensive and up-to-date book about integrating XML with Java (and vice versa) you can buy. It contains over 1000 pages of detailed information on SAX, DOM, JDOM, JAXP, TrAX, XPath, XSLT, SOAP, and lots of other juicy acronyms. This book is written for Java programmers who want to learn how to read and write XML documents from their code. The paper version is published by Addison-Wesley, and can be found at fine bookstores everywhere including Amazon and . The list price is $54.95, but most bookstores are offering their usual discounts. Normally, this is the point where I'd spend a few paragraphs describing just what's in the book and how important it is to your education, your career, and your love life; but this time I've done something a little different. The entire book is available online. You can read every chapter and every page so you can see for yourself how well this book answers your questions such as, " Why does SAX truncate the text in my documents after a few thousand characters?

    Introduction
Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple, very flexible text format derived from SGML ( ISO 8879 ). Originally designed to meet the challenges of large-scale electronic publishing, XML is also playing an increasingly important role in the exchange of a wide variety of data on the Web and elsewhere. This page describes the work being done at W3C within the XML Activity, and how it is structured. Work at W3C takes place in Working Groups . The Working Groups within the XML Activity are listed below, together with links to their individual web pages. You can find and download formal technical specifications here, because we publish them. This is not a place to find tutorials, products, courses, books or other XML-related information. There are some links below that may help you find such resources. You will find links to W3C Recommendations, Proposed Recommendations, Working Drafts, conformance test suites and other documents on the pages for each Working Group. Each document also contains email addresses you can use to send comments or questions, for example if you have been writing software to implement them and have found problems or errors.

    What is RSS?
by Mark Pilgrim December 18, 2002 RSS is a format for syndicating news and the content of news-like sites, including major news sites like Wired, news-oriented community sites like Slashdot, and personal weblogs. But it's not just for news. Pretty much anything that can be broken down into discrete items can be syndicated via RSS: the "recent changes" page of a wiki, a changelog of CVS checkins, even the revision history of a book. Once information about each item is in RSS format, an RSS-aware program can check the feed for changes and react to the changes in an appropriate way. RSS-aware programs called news aggregators are popular in the weblogging community. Many weblogs make content available in RSS. A news aggregator can help you keep up with all your favorite weblogs by checking their RSS feeds and displaying new items from each of them.

This format, which is based on RDF, is called RSS 1.0. But UserLand was not involved in designing this new format, and, as an advocate of simplifying 0.90, it was not happy when RSS 1.0 was announced. Instead of accepting RSS 1.0, UserLand continued to evolve the 0.9x branch, through versions 0.92, 0.93, 0.94, and finally 2.0.

    Abstract
The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a subset of SGML that is completely described in this document. Its goal is to enable generic SGML to be served, received, and processed on the Web in the way that is now possible with HTML. XML has been designed for ease of implementation and for interoperability with both SGML and HTML.

SVG and Typography: Bells and Whistles Fabio Arciniegas A., XML.com In this installment of our discussion of SVG and typography, we make a departure from the sobriety of the typographic strategies we've been discussing so far and go for the other half of the fun: the bells and whistles of effects, distortions, coloring, and other unusual treatments of type. We will create reusable code (basically a cookbook) of common typographic treatments implemented in SVG. The idea is to recreate some of the most famous effects you would expect from a design book in SVG: Blur; Outer Shadow; Image within Type; Type within Image; Stroke; Dilate; Bevel; Gradients; Spacing; Skew; Mixing. This article is intended as a little arsenal of typographic treatments implemented in SVG. See also W3C Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) Entity and Character References Bob DuCharme
