Let me make a bold statement right now, and I'll take the rest of this article to prove it: Anyone with half a brain knows Windows NT is unable to handle the same loads Unix can. I'm not talking here about your average server serving a 200 employee company. No, I'm talking about the bare bones of the Internet. I'll take each major Internet service and we'll find out what kind of servers run the top of the tops. DNS. The DNS system as it is right now is based on a tree model. There are 13 root servers, which contain the information for all domains. They then send lookup requests to ISPs, which then send the requests to various local name servers. Now 13 servers handling the load of the whole Internet is something impressive. No other server can claim to handle more DNS requests than the top root server, RS.INTERNIC.NET. So what OS does this server run? UNIX. In fact all 13 root servers run some flavor of UNIX (mostly BSD and Solaris).
