Distributed Virtual Reality An Overview
by Bernie Roehl
(First draft: June, 1995)
[This document is kept online; the URL for it is http://ece.uwaterloo.ca/~broehl/distrib.html [There is also a companion piece, describing the behavior of virtual entities, at http://ece.uwaterloo.ca/~broehl/behav.html One of the hottest topics in Virtual Reality research is the idea of "distributed" VR. A lot of ideas have been tossed around in various newsgroups and mailing lists; this document is attempt to bring together some of the more interesting concepts and organize them in a way that's easy to follow. This is very much a "living" document; I'm eager to hear what people think of it, and I'm quite willing to make changes based on that input. Feel free to get in touch with me; my email address is broehl@ece.uwaterloo.ca (if you don't hear back right away, please bear with me; I get a lot of email, and often fall behind).
What is "Distributed VR"?
The idea behind distributed VR is very simple; a simulated world runs not on one computer system, but on several. The computers are connected over a network (possibly the global Internet) and people using those computers are able to interact in real time, sharing the same virtual world. In theory, people can be sitting at home in London, Paris, New York and Edmonton, all interacting in a meaningful way in VR.

Don Bain's Virtual Reality Panoramas
See more " unwrapped " panoramas QuickTime VR is a revolutionary technology pioneered by Apple Computer that allows you to interact with an image - you can look up, down, right, left, even around behind, and zoom in and out. It is the next best thing to being there. Needless to say, this is a technology with immense implications for teaching and learning about geography and environment. These images were all created from photographs of actual places. Requires QuickTime . This free software from Apple Computer, available for Macintosh or Windows, is necessary to view the panoramas. Download it before viewing. The panoramas on this site are a selection drawn from the much larger collection on Don Bain's Virtual Guidebooks website. Virtual Guidebooks contains over 3000 virtual reality panoramas spanning western North America from Hawaii to Wyoming, from the Arctic Ocean to Baja California. It is extensively cross-referenced and searchable. The panoramas on Virtual Guidebooks are larger and more detailed than the ones here. dbain@virtualguidebooks.com

The CAVE Virtual Reality System
The CAVE is a projection based virtual reality system developed at the Electronic Visualization Lab ; it was created by Carolina Cruz-Neira Dan Sandin , and Tom DeFanti , along with other students and staff of EVL. More recent VR systems based on the CAVE are the ImmersaDesk and the IWall . The ImmersaDesk is a one-screen, drafting table style device. The IWall is a large, single screen display using four tiled graphics pipes for increased resolution. The CAVE was first demonstrated at the SIGGRAPH '92 conference. Since then, more than two dozen CAVEs and ImmersaDesks have been installed at various sites The CAVE and ImmersaDesk are now commercial products sold by Fakespace Systems (formerly Pyramid Systems Inc ); the CAVE Library software is sold and distributed by VRCO . For information on purchasing a CAVE or IDesk, or obtaining CAVE software, contact them. Further information on the CAVE can be found in EVL's old official CAVE pages

Recent Virtual Heritage/History There are a number of groups utilizing virtual reality to insure that soon everyone will have a chance to visit the wonders of our world, both past and present. Called Virtual Heritage, this process allows scientists and historians to recreate, study, and protect these important historical sites. Art/Technology Art/Technology guide Sharon Silva shows you some interesting 3D and VR art. Understanding Virtual Reality Many people are confused about what virtual reality really means. Here is an easy to understand explanation.

Virtual reality
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Virtual reality (abbreviated VR) describes an environment that is simulated by a computer . Most virtual reality environments are primarily visual experiences, displayed either on a computer screen or through special stereoscopic goggles, but some simulations include additional sensory information, such as sound through speakers. Users can often interactively manipulate a VR environment, either through standard input devices like a keyboard , or through specially designed devices like a cyberglove . The simulated environment can be similar to the real worldfor example, in simulations for pilot or combat trainingor it can differ significantly from reality, as in VR games. In practice, it is very difficult to create a convincing virtual reality experience, due largely to limitations on processing power. Virtual reality originally denoted a fully immersive system, although it has since been used to describe systems lacking cybergloves etc., such as VRML on the World Wide Web and occasionally even text-based interactive systems such as MOOs or MUDs The term virtual reality was possibly coined by Jaron Lanier in . Lanier is one of the pioneers of the field, founding the company

Thursday June 03, 2004 VREfresh thanks its Sponsors: Flexible Display Technology Representatives for display technology companies, government officials and academia converged at Arizona State University's Research Park last week to kick off an initiative focused on flexible display technology research, development and prototype manufacturing. This university-industry-government collaboration is chartered with accelerating the development of flexible display technology, as well as promoting the growth of the USA-based flexible display industry. This collaboration is being realized through the Flexible Display Center Gaming in 3D on Mobiles Samsung Electronics Co has announced an addition to its Mobile DRAM portfolio, a monolithic 256Mbit, 32-bit wide Double Data Rate (DDR) device that offers the bandwidth needed for photo-realistic 3D gaming in handsets. Samples are available today with mass production scheduled in the second half of 2004. The device is part of Samsung's product family of Mobile Synchronous DRAM solutions that are available as Single Data Rate (SDR) or Double Data Rate (DDR) devices, all of which meet the power and form factor requirements demanded by battery-powered handsets. Said Ivan Greenberg, Director of Strategic Marketing at Samsung Semiconductor, "3D gaming on handsets is expected to become commonplace by 2006." May 28, 2004
