VUG conducts research in information visualization, virtual environments, related HCI technologies, and the evaluation of these technologies in order to demonstrate the utility and feasibility of visual displays of information to industry and government. The group achieves this mission by:
  • Measuring the effectiveness of leading edge HCI technology, primarily information visualization, and web access for improving the interaction among USERS and INFORMATION, Investigating usability and interoperability, and Building evaluation tools and developing evaluation methods.
Our current projects:
  • GLUT/Tk integrates GLUT and Tcl/Tk to allow OpenGL programmers to easily develop sophisticated GUIs for their graphics applications. IUSR initiated to increase the visibility of software usability. DARPA IM is to develop evaluation methodologies and tools that enable user-centric testing and benchmarking of information management systems. Web Metrics to explore the feasibility of a range of tools and techniques that support rapid, remote, and automated testing and evaluation of website usability.

Virtual Reality: A Short Introduction

Terminology
Head-Mounted Display (HMD) BOOM ... Applications
Terminology
The term 'Virtual Reality' (VR) was initially coined by Jaron Lanier, founder of VPL Research (1989). Other related terms include 'Artificial Reality' (Myron Krueger, 1970s), 'Cyberspace' (William Gibson, 1984), and, more recently, 'Virtual Worlds' and 'Virtual Environments' (1990s).
Today, 'Virtual Reality' is used in a variety of ways and often in a confusing and misleading manner. Originally, the term referred to 'Immersive Virtual Reality.' In immersive VR, the user becomes fully immersed in an artificial, three-dimensional world that is completely generated by a computer.
Head-Mounted Display (HMD)
The head-mounted display (HMD) was the first device providing its wearer with an immersive experience. Evans and Sutherland demonstrated a head-mounted stereo display already in 1965. It took more then 20 years before VPL Research introduced a commercially available HMD, the famous "EyePhone" system (1989).
A head-mounted display (HMD):
Web size
(83 K)
A typical HMD houses two miniature display screens and an optical system that channels the images from the screens to the eyes, thereby, presenting a stereo view of a virtual world. A motion tracker continuously measures the position and orientation of the user's head and allows the image generating computer to adjust the scene representation to the current view. As a result, the viewer can look around and walk through the surrounding virtual environment.

"Putting the Depth into 3D wallpaper"
When Windows desktop meets the 3D game you get drive-in wallpaper - 3D desktop wallpapers which you move into and desktop icons which you move among. Explore your desktop in 3D. Look around and move around as in a 3D game. Instead of power-ups and players to watch out for, you have 3D icons and views to look at. Instead of in-game action immerse yourself in ROOMS desktop space and enjoy its views just park your eyes Organize your stuff logically as meaningful 3D icons in a matching virtual reality world (ROOMS icons are like Windows shortcuts).
Download worlds or create your own
Download worlds from the internet or create your own. Theme worlds on your favorite game - or virtual den, or office, or personal picture album - or create your own surreal world. When you want a change - load another world (just like wallpaper). Worlds loaded from this Web site are designed with spaces to explore and mind-blowing views. We publish new worlds under the title CoolWare every few weeks. Some of these are for FreeWare ROOMS and others need the ROOMS World Viewer license.

The virtual reality Portal is the best place to start your navigation in the world of virtual reality technology. Immersive virtual reality Technology.
http://beard.dialnsa.edu/~gpagano/
Immersive Virtual Reality Technology The term 'Virtual Reality' is used in a variety of ways. This portal focuses on its original meaning which refers to immersive virtual reality systems. Other forms of VR include desktop VR , the CAVE , or virtual words created with VRML . What follows is a definition of VR: Virtual Reality is a high-end user interface that involves real time 3D simulations and interactions through position and motion tracking, stereo audio and video, touch and force feedback techniques. The user's personal viewpoint is completely immersed in the virtual world.
Virtual Reality is an encumbering technology because of the heavy devices, such as the HMD or the datasuit, that you have to wear.
Virtual Reality is a multidisciplinary science founded on the creation, storage and manipulation of models (DNA) derived from a variety of fields (for example physics, mathematics, engineering, architecture, geometry, psychology, ...). Virtual Reality is a cognitive technology based on the
employment of the "cognitive capabilities of our body."

Open Source CAD
The Web3D Consortium
has announced completed the first working draft of the CAD Distillation Format (CDF) specification - an open, royalty-free file format to distill the essential elements of complex CAD and architectural data.
The Consortium, whose members include HP, Sun Microsystems and 3Dlabs, said the CAD Distillation Format (CDF) is geared to help drive productivity, cut costs and raise revenue streams in sales and marketing departments that desire to use CAD graphics without exposing sensitive design information.

It was formed on 27 Feb 1998 with the goal of developing tools and recommended practice for the representation of geographical data using the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML). The desire is to enable geo-referenced data, such as maps and 3-D terrain models, to be viewed over the web by a user with a standard VRML plugin for their web browser. The GeoVRML Working Group has a mailing list where discussions and developments are posted. Currently, this list consists of over 200 members drawn from a wide gamut of backgrounds and nationalities, including members from industry, government, and academia; geographers, geologists, computer graphics developers, and of course interested hobbyists. The group has recently produced the GeoVRML 1.1 specification, providing a number of extensions to VRML for supporting geographic applications. There is also an accompanying Open Source Java sample implementation of these nodes. Finally, these nodes are part of Amendment 1 to the VRML97 ISO standard. Working Group Information
Description
