This is a simplified diagram of unix history. There are numerous derivative systems not listed in this chart, maybe 10 times more! In the recent past, many electronic companies had their own unix releases. This diagram is only the tip of an iceberg, with a penguin on it ;-).
If you want to print this timeline, you can download one of the following files: Printer using A4 paper Printer using Letter paper Plotter If you have some problem
with the EPS file, look here
Here is the index of the Unix History : Printer using A4 paper Printer using Letter paper
Here is the ChangeLog of this history.
If you have put this diagram on the wall of your office and have taken a photo of it, please send me a copy and I'll put it on this page
Note 1 : an arrow indicates an inheritance like a compatibility, it is not only a matter of source code
Note 2 : this diagram shows complete systems and [micro]kernels like Mach, Linux, the Hurd... This is because sometimes kernel versions are more appropriate to see the evolution of the system. Note 3 : I have now a page where I explain how I build this chart.

I use my Handspring Visor Prism primarily for keeping my calendar and todo list but I also keep ideas and notes on the memo pad, download websites, mail, news, etc. I purchased the Prism in Feb of 2002, and my first PDA was a Palm III x , which I got in June of 1999. My working environment at home is NetBSD 1.5.2 and at work it's SGI Irix 6.5 . On both Operating Systems I run within the KDE windowing environment. I've gotten the pilot-link unix software installed in both locations. Under Unix, I'm currently using the Visor mostly with Jpilot . Plugins available with jpilot include avantgo, backup, synctime, and GNU keyring. I've found each of these very useful. Jpilot also understands the palm application Manana (a duplicate todo database and application for things you'll do "tomorrow"). In the past I had installed and run KPilot . I then used KPilot to sync the Calendar and ToDo lists on the palm with KOrganizer . I've also patched the 1.1.1 version of KOrganizer to provide some basic support for dated todos (before this patch, korganizer would ignore dated information).

Regardless how you come here you are either die hard UNIX worshipper further called "Worshipper" or user of Microsoft OS and products who likes products of Microsoft.
I myself have been using Windows since 3.1 and NT since 3.5 and along with it bunch of related products like SQL, IIS, VB etc.
Through my career I have been also a user of UNIX, UNIX clones so I'm not completely dilettante in UNIX either (I have studied and passed certification for Sun Solaris Certified Admin). I did program CGI in Perl and did run Apache, I did install Linux and Solaris, I do have MCSE, MCSD, MCDBA certifications from Microsoft.
Why this site existent? Because I want my voice to be heard out there between myriad of anti-Microsoft sites that there are actually people who stand by Microsoft products and I intend to give you enough information so you'd be able to make decision Windows vs UNIX with some facts in hand.
By UNIX worshipper I mean not only die hard fanatics of that OS but just general population with common hate for Microsoft and it's products. It includes dismissed judge from Microsoft
