Overview The Speech Technology Group engages in research and development of spoken language technologies. We are interested not only in creating state-of-the-art spoken language components, but also in how these disparate components can come together with other modes of human-computer interaction to form a unified, consistent computing environment. We are pursuing several projects to help us reach our vision of a fully speech-enabled computer. Our main goal is to build applications that make computers available everywhere, especially in .NET applications, and work with

Voice Technology and Voice Directed Order Picking deliver a whole new level of efficiency for today's modern warehouse.
- Frequently Asked Questions -
Q. How is Voice Technology used in Warehouse Management? A. Voice technology uses speech recognition and speech synthesis to allow workers to communicate with the Warehouse Management System (WMS). Warehouse operatives use a wireless, wearable computer with a headset and microphone to receive instructions by voice, and verbally confirm their actions back to the system. The wearable computer, or voice terminal, communicates with the WMS via a radio frequency (RF) local area network (LAN). Q. What can I use it for? A. The most common application is Order Picking where improved accuracy and productivity offer a fast payback, but you can also use it for Goods Received, Pallet Put-away and Let-down, and Stock Checking. January/February 2003 Send to a Friend Printer-Friendly Version Please Enable JavaScript Hype vs. Effective Speech Technology By Bruce Armstrong My first real experience with speech technology was in the research group at WordPerfect in 1994. I was given the task of adding speech recognition capabilities to WordPerfect 6. After surveying the available technology and business opportunities, we inked a deal with Dragon Systems to include a version of DragonDictate in the box. Unfortunately, the deal was signed so close to the release date that the technology was not included in any of the marketing material. Further, to utilize the technology, the user had to send in to buy a microphone. This was, in our view at the time, a great technology breakthrough that remained hidden from the users due to poor marketing. The effort made no impact on either WordPerfect or DragonDictate sales.
