Technology has made selfhosting a practical alternative. In the midsize enterprise space, VPI.Net is also seeing a mixture of outsourcing and self-hosting.

Weighing all options
August 2002: Hosting Tech Magazine Technology has made self-hosting a practical alternative. What influences a customer's decision toward either outsourcing or do-it-yourself? Wayne Epperson wepperson@hostingtech.com Even as hosting providers fall one-by-one to poor planning and a hostile economy, the surviving companies still might find expanding their customer bases a daunting challenge. Generally, numerous objections have to be overcome and competitors have to be bested before a prospect becomes a client. No matter how slick the presentation or how hot the service provider, the scariest competitor will always be the customer itself. It has been called everything from initiative to independence to ingenuity, but it boils down to one thing: self-hosting. No figures have been published about the number of companies taking care of their own Web services, but there is general agreement that the business practice of self-hosting is the single biggest check to the aggressive growth of service providers. A company that chooses to self-host can be any size, from a small business to a major enterprise-class company. The little guy

http://www.steve.gb.com/perl/lesson18.html
Lesson 18 Reinventing the wheel The parsing of mark-up languages like XML and HTML is fairly well served by CPAN modules. However, for parsing a hand rolled data structure, you will have to roll your own parser in some way. For this, you may consider using regular expressions, and this will generally work out fine as long as you know what you're doing, and if you are sure that the thing you hope to parse is actually parsable with regexes. For not all things are. Although Perl's regexes are too irregular (in the mathematical sense) to be regarded as real 'regular' expressions, they are still too regular to be used to create (irregular) grammars . Irregular grammars are needed to describe nested languages like XML, hence any attempt to write a regex that matches any conceivable XML document is doomed to fail. For the same reasons, using regexes to parse HTML, or (gulp) Perl code is at best a dirty hack for a few special cases, and at worst, impossible. So don't do that. Grammars, of which regexes are the most basic sort, are what you use to describe, parse, and grasp the meaning of a language. The application of a grammar to a string will allow you to determine whether that string belongs to a given language or not. For regexes, what

Date: Fri May 03 2002 - 16:08:45 EST UML is now able to run nested inside itself. This works as of UML 2.4.18-21,
which isn't released yet, but will be soon. See the log below for the gory
details, and also see http://user-mode-linux.sf.net/nesting.html for how to
do it yourself.
This is a sign of UML maturity rather than any new magic functionality having
been added. UML is a demanding process, so even though it uses only the Linux
system call interface, it takes some maturity for a Linux kernel to host it.
The missing pieces were a couple of signal delivery bugs that were still
lurking. Once these were fixed, UML booted right up.
Jeff Here's the log of the first nested boot. Notes: 'usermode:~#' is the UML shell prompt.

http://www.netdummy.net/dynamicdns.html
Dynamic DNS Self-Hosting ?
The cost of obtaining a single or a block of static ip addresses is still rather high and the bandwidth provided is also low.
In order for the smaller companies to serve their own web pages and have their own domain mail, they will have to make the decision of eithier to get their domain hosted or make use of the dynamic ip addresses that they are allocated with.
Having the domain hosted would save companies intending to get a web presence alot of headaches but leave them with very little flexibility on the kind of pages they can serve on their hosting company. Some are restricted to only plain HTML or ASP pages (Windows-based) while others supporting only PHP and Perl but no ASP (Linux or Unix-based).
Besides that, there are also restriction on number of email accounts, web space allocated which also covers the space required for your mailboxes. If your web pages takes up 20 MB (which is common for ASP pages that link to databases), it will only leaves you with 30 MB for a 50 MB server size allocation. Price of this option (Windows-based), initial setup fee S$85.00 plus monthly hosting charge of S$65.00.
Alternatively, you can self-host. But the overall cost may not be lower because price of a static ip broadband connection is not cheap plus there is no service level assurance, meaning there is no guarantee on the acheivable speed nor the the uptime. Price of this option, monthly around S$280.00 for a 256k unlimited. There is also a initial setup fee for this at around S$150.00.

Self-hosting
A self-hosting software distribution is one which provides all necessary source code to enable itself to be re-compiled from scratch, including all of the necessary tool chains needed for its compilation. Some Linux distributions such as Gentoo Linux and Sorcerer Linux are self-hosting. Also (of a computer language): a computer language which is natively implemented in its own language. The programming languages C and Lisp are self-hosting.

http://wandel.ca/homepage/tcc/
My Own C Compiler
This page written March 25, 2003 Not strictly my own, as it was a two-person project, done together with a CS student named Peter Mielke. In 1990, in fourth year university , we Computer Engineering students were permitted to take fourth year Computer Science elective courses. Perennial favourites were the trains course (real-time control of an electric train layout) and the compiler course ( link to current version ). I took the latter. The format was very simple: You could come to the lectures if you wanted, and they would teach you interesting stuff, but your final mark was mostly determined by the self-hosting C compiler that you would write. In those days, the favourite Computer Science type of computer was still the DEC VAX, which had the most elaborate instruction set imaginable (one instruction had 7 arguments), having been designed to be programmed by hand in assembly language, unlike modern machines. Very easy to generate code for. Some groups elected to generate code for the Motorola 68000 instead; this was because they had 68000 machines at home (Atari ST or Amiga). Our compute environment was DEC MicroVAX II machines shared among a number of people each, typically running at load average 5 (i.e. at any time there were 5 tasks competing for the CPU). Doing a full recompile of a project of this size (on the order of 8000 lines of C) took so long that people went for a pizza and beer at the nearby student pub while waiting for it to finish!
