Self Hosting
Monotone development is self-hosting now. This means that once you have a copy of monotone, you can use it to track the development of monotone from your own machine, rather than using CVS.
Using my netsync server
I have set up a netsync server (a copy of monotone serving the netsync protocol) which I will store my own versions of monotone in, including releases and merges from other people and whatnot. This can be read by anyone, but only I (and, well, perhaps a couple other people if they ask nicely) can add things to it, since it's mine. If you want to develop monotone yourself, you should try to make your own server for hosting your own changes (see later on ). Setting yourself up to read from my server is pretty simple. Just follow these four steps:
  • Get or build a copy of the most recent monotone release. Initialize a database, which is just a regular file you'll store versions and certificates into. monotone db=monotone.db db init Add my server's public key so you can verify its identity. You can also add anyone else's public key you want to work with, of course. Here is the server's current public key: [pubkey monotone@off.net] MIGdMA0GCSqGSIb3DQEBAQUAA4GLADCBhwKBgQCkVU7BYI5bRRJmkJc8gomO9WdTTGG10Lmh PdAEqD6sSdsMkTC9okfsQQ8obE+GODrFa70fX5PJNevNoE+Ryxzu+xtJjmuR2tYTeRNwNa0F dIo/QLteQ4Vwh5162It1kPhLKb1Ki62ZG8aw6ATS4GQVJPci2g1lpn1RG0Z+fFdFJQIBEQ== [end]

thanks zillions and kind regards Become A Member, Free! self hosting shinepuppy Hi cyberjaya,
It all depends on your setup. If you are trying to host your site off of one of your home computers, you will need some kind of high speed connectivity to your house that allows you to run servers. In the US, most broadband providers do not allow you to run servers behind their connection, but they might let you in Malaysia. These broadband connections are typically extremely slow on the upload side and aren't well suited for hosting sites. You could step up and lease a T1 or a fractional T3, however they are very expensive (starting at around 400-500 US dollars a month) and they are only a fraction of the speed that professional web hosts have at their disposal.
If all you want to be able to do is have complete and exclusive control over a server and host your web site on it, there are plenty of companies out there who will lease you a server, give you the administrators password, and you will have complete control of the machine. They typically will also let you use their DNS servers. I suggest you check out www.EV1Servers.net. We have several servers with them and they have proven to be very reliable and reputable.

Why not try our Mail Server or FTP Server Hosting services can often cost hundreds and even thousands of dollars a year. For this reason, many businesses and personal users are now making the effort to save money by setting up their own server. This page aims to provide an easy to follow guide that will bring you up to speed on self hosting. If you are new to the idea of self hosting or only have a basic understanding then we recommend you read step 1 first. More experienced users can skip this step and go directly to the relevant section.

Why not try our Mail Server or FTP Server Step 4: Domain Registration
This page explains how to choose the right domain name for you.
    Registering Your Domain Name
Before you can do anything else, you need a domain name. This can be a very dull and boring process, simply because the best names are always taken, so be prepared to spend hours searching for the perfect name. There are plenty of domain name registering companies on the Internet, many of which offer good low prices and almost all offer a quick search facility that allows you to check if a name has been taken. We used register.com who charged about $35 a year per domain name. When registering your domain name with your chosen registrar, you should be careful that you are not signing up for any hosting or email packages. If you want to host the site yourself, it would be a complete waste of money to pay for any extra packages.
    Free Domain Names
Although a domain name is probably the best and most professional approach to owning a website, some people cannot afford or do not require this luxury. However, there is another approach that still gives you the ability of self hosting for free. A company called no-ip offer a free service which allows you to use a sub-domain of various domains as your domain name. If we decided that we didn't want to pay for www.code-crafters.com, we could have had a free name such as www.code-crafters.hopto.com. Our emails would also have looked like user@code-crafters.hopto.com and would still work with all the same potential.

Self Hosting for Home and SOHO
    Introduction
With the growing number of areas that can access always-on high speed internet connections and growing sophistication of free software, a new possibility is presented to both small and home based businesses, as well as domestic users with mutiple PCs. Many functions that were impractical, too costly or indeed just plain impossible for the dialup generation, are now open. This article outlines how one can unhook oneself from ISP lock-in and at the same time take a step up in both functionality and ease of use.
    The Anvil Organisation
's own system is a concrete example of the concepts outlined by this article
    ISP Lock-in
The domestic user is in a similar position. More and more people are using email in preference to the post office and the phone to keep in contact with friends and relations. Switching address is quite frankly a pain. Try it a few times if you don't believe me. You run the definite risk of losing touch with people who don't write so often. Sit back a moment and think how many people you know, whos email address you have, but nothing else.
It is used to be prohibitively expensive and complicated to have a domain name of one's own. This is no longer the case and in fact hasn't been the case for some little while. If you take the obvious direct route to having your own, it may well seem that it still is. Many ISPs still treat having your own domain name as the preserve of large corporates and price it accordingly. It no longer costs that much to do.

[Monotone-devel] newcomer thoughts and questions (self hosting, CVS)
From Eric S. Johansson Subject [Monotone-devel] newcomer thoughts and questions (self hosting, CVS) Date Mon, 03 May 2004 07:51:36 -0400 User-agent Mozilla Thunderbird 0.5 (Windows/20040207) I am looking for a new revision control system and I would prefer to use something that is relatively distributed and far more flexible than CVS. Yet at the same time, I cannot yet throw out the CVS baby out with the bathwater.
part of the reason I'm leaving CVS behind is because I have done great violence to CVS repositories. I am forever rearranging directory hierarchies as new relationships arise and fall apart. I'm also not comfortable with the central server model of CVS but prefer one where there is no permanent center and that if the center goes away, other centers can take over if need be.
I've been uncomfortable with both subversion and arch for a couple reasons. Usually relating to complexity. For example, I really like how arch works in many ways but unfortunately, the user interface seems to have been written by aliens and it is also way to verbose for handicapped person like myself[1]
but one of the nice things in the arch world is the ability to synchronize with an existing CVS archive. Personally, I wouldn't really care about synchronizing every little change but if I could say "synchronize in *this* monotone state with the current state of CVS", it would go a long way to helping with the transition.

    John Morris jmorris@beau.lib.la.us
Wed, 28 Apr 2004 10:33:23 -0500 (CDT) Secondly, from a discussion in the pub last night someone told me that WBEL wasn't self hosting, however I was under the impression it was. The website suggests it was originally built on Taroon-beta - is everything now built on WBEL instead? RC1 was built on taroon-beta. Then RC1 was used as the platform to build RC2. Finally, RC2 was used to build the 3.0 final, mostly just to confirm the self-hosting ability. gettext is the exception, the copy that shipped in 3.0 is the copy built on taroon-beta. Apparently I succeeded in getting a JDK correctly installed that go and failed later. At least that is the word I got on the list from one of the cAos guys. Still haven't tried rolling that one again, but I suspect they are right. Everything you need to rebuild is on the CDs except a JDK. If you add in Oracle (which I plan to do for the upcoming respin since it is a free download for a developers version) you should be able to get tora to build with Oracle support like RHEL's copy does.
