These robot systems offer advantages over traditional mobile robots and robot arms, especially in convoluted environments which require minimal invasion. Examples of highly articulated robots are snake robots, cooperating robots, reconfigurable robots, and cooperating-reconfigurable robots. Current applications include: bridge inspection, space structure inspection, painting, search and rescue, material handling (see B. Messner), and security. This research exploits a geometric structure termed a roadmap, which is a collection of one-dimensional curves that captures the salient topological and geometric properties of a robot's environment. Two key advantages of the roadmap in this work are: (1) it can be constructed using sensor data and (2) it is a one-dimensional subset of the robot's space, and thus searching in an m-dimensional robot configuration space is reduced to a one-dimensional search. The mathematical basis of this research extends to non-robotic applications such as surface inspection, camera placement, and injection molding.
