by Chris Radcliff Perl for the Web is a book I wrote that was published by New Riders in August 2001. It provides tools and strategies to improve the performance of existing Web applications in Perl. It also provides principles and ideas that help Web programmers create an extensible framework for future growth. The full text of the book is offered right here. The chapters are stored in an XML form and published to HTML and WML using the techniques from Chapters 16 and 17. There are no figures or images yet, but all the text is there and code sections are both readable and downloadable. If you like the book, pick up a copy from the BookSense site. 166. About Gedafe
The Generic Database Frontend is a webbased database frontend for PostgreSQL that is database-application independent. (perl)

    Page Maintainer:

    Last Update:
Gedafe 1.2.0 is released! Read more...
Gedafe is a Generic, Web-based, PostgreSQL Database Front-end written in Perl. It pulls all information it needs right from the underlying database. No database specific configuration is required in the front-end itself. Gedafe is nevertheless End-User-Friendly. This means that it provides a full featured Database Application Web-interface ready to be used by normal people. The main idea behind Gedafe is to put all the application logic into the database along with meta-information on how to present the data. This allows to use a generic front-end which gathers that information and then builds the user interface accordingly. Modern databases such as PostgreSQL allow to setup rules defining what sort of data is permitted in each field of a table. It is even possible to store little programs (stored procedures) which get executed whenever a value in a table is inserted/changed/deleted. The program can then take additional action, run elaborate tests, and in the end even refuse the modification. Implementing the application in the database is good practice, as it is highly effective in ensuring data integrity. Whatever means are used to access the database, data-integrity rules will be enforced. Also, writing database applications at the database level is easier, since the built-in programming facilities of the database are tailored to this very purpose.

    1. Background
One of the wonderful features of GIMP is that it all its functionality may be accessed through scripting. So far most of the script programming for Gimp has been done through Scheme through Script-Fu. Unfortunately the Scheme environment Gimp provides is very primitive, e.g. without any reasonable error handling. Furthermore, must users are not familiar with scheme as a language. Some users may therefore prefer to write scripts for the Gimp in Perl. Perl as a language is probably more familiar to the web-literate users, as it is the major language for writing CGI scripts. Now, Gimp scripts may also be written with Perl. This tutorial will describe how to write such plug-ins and scripts for Gimp. As there are several excellent tutorial texts describing the perl language, this tutorial will assume at working knowledge of Perl, and will instead concentrate on the use GIMP together with the of the perl modules Gimp and Gimp::Fu, written by Marc Lehmann

Converts Netscape's bookmarks.html file into a series of interconnected HTML pages which can be put online. (perl)
    http://www.bleb.org/software/bkmrkconv/
    - bkmrkconv will convert this file into a series of web pages which, by default, can mimic the style of a Yahoo-like portal.
    Features
    • Small, fast and portable Perl script
    • Highly configurable output via a series of templates
    • Generate a contents page containing an entire alphabetical list of either all the links or all the sections, or none at all
    • Separate templates for the front page, section pages and the contents page
    • Include output from arbitrary commands, eg. fortune
    • Open sourced under the Artistic Licence
    • Hierarchical pages means that each page is relatively small meaning you can quickly navigate to the link you want without having to wait for 200k of tables to load
    • Description fields of links can be used to give more context
    • Can include how many links are contained in a branch
    Configuration
Two examples are included, the templates I use for my own bookmarks site and a simpler template showing that it doesn't necessarily have to look that way... It is strongly encouraged to change/redesign/produce your own templates to give your site an air of individualism.

    Introduction
Perl is an interpreted scripting language with high-level support for text processing, file/directory management, and networking. Perl originated on Unix but as of 1997 has been ported to numerous platforms including the Win32 API (on which Win95/NT are based). It is the defacto language for CGI scripts. If I had to learn just one scripting language, it would be Perl. This document is not meant to be a thorough reference manual; instead, see the concisely-written manual pages ("man pages") or buy the Perl book (Programming Perl 2nd Edition, by Wall, Christianson and Schwartz, ISBN 1-56592-149-6 . This document attempts to help an experienced programmer unfamiliar with Perl up to speed as quickly as possible on the most commonly used features of Perl. For the experience Perl programmer looking for a reference, I recommend Perl in a Nutshell, by Ellen Siever, Stephen Spainhour and Nathan Patwardhan, ISBN 1-56592-286-7. I am willing to sacrifice 100% correctness if there is a much simpler view that is correct 99% of the time. There are several reasons for taking this approach (I need to finish this paragraph).

I'm busy writing this monthly column for WebTechniques magazine. They've agreed to let me put them online as soon as they've appeared in print. Because I'm generally busy (or lazy), I simply ran the source files through the translator so that I could put them online here.
