It is a whole new way to create dynamic content by utilizing the full power of the Apache web server to create stateful sessions, customized user authentication systems, smart proxies and much more. Yet, magically, your old CGI scripts will continue to work and work very fast indeed. With mod_perl you give up nothing and gain so much! Lincoln Stein mod_perl gives you a persistent Perl interpreter embedded in your web server. This lets you avoid the overhead of starting an external interpreter and avoids the penalty of Perl start-up time, giving you super-fast dynamic content.

Modules to provide a simple and consistent programming interface to the WWW.
http://www.linpro.no/lwp/
The libwww-perl collection is a set of Perl modules which provides a simple and consistent application programming interface to the World-Wide Web. The main focus of the library is to provide classes and functions that allow you to write WWW clients. The library also contain modules that are of more general use and even classes that help you implement simple HTTP servers. The latest version of the library is libwww-perl-5.64.tar.gz (179 KB) which was released Feb 9, 2002. You will need perl version 5.005 or better to use this version. You can look at the individual files of the latest distribution directly, which includes the Changes file that should tell you if an upgrade is worthwhile. For perl version 5.004 you should continue to use libwww-perl-5.53.tar.gz (153 KB) which was released Apr 10, 2001. This version does not provide HTTP/1.1 support. The latest libwww-perl package as well as perl itself are also available on CPAN (Comprehensive Perl Archive Network). This is also the place to obtain the other packes that libwww-perl depend upon ( URI HTML::Parser MIME::Base64 Digest::MD5 , and Net::FTP from libnet ) as well as other modules that I wrote From SourceForge you can also obtain the source directly from CVS and also browse the CVS repository directly. Overview
Perl is Open Source software. You can download it for free as a source code or as a pre-compiled binary distribution.
    Perl Source Code Distribution
Use the instructions below to download the complete Perl source code distribution via your Web browser. On CPAN, you will find Perl source in the /src directory. The source code is distributed as either a Unix-style tar archive compressed by GNU zip (gz) or as a PC-style ZIP archive. (The only difference is the type of archive; the same source code files are inside the archive. Once you download the gzip or zip archive, you will have to extract the source code files from the distribution and then follow the instructions on how to compile the source code for your system. If you don't have a compiler, or are unclear about compiling source code, then look first for a binary distribution of Perl.

Introduction
This document is a semi-formal list of Perl 5 Modules. The Perl 4 concept of packages has been extended in Perl 5 and a new standardised form of reusable software component has been defined: the Module. Perl 5 Modules typically conform to certain guidelines which make them easier to use, reuse, integrate and extend.
This list has two key aims:
  • FOR DEVELOPERS: To change duplication of effort into cooperation. FOR USERS: To quickly locate existing software which can be reused.
This list includes the Perl 5 standard modules, other completed modules, work-in-progress modules and would-be-nice-to-have ideas for modules. It also includes guidelines for those wishing to create new modules including how to name them.

http://www.cpan.org/ports/
Perl Ports (Binary Distributions)
CPAN /ports Acorn AIX Amiga Apple ... z/OS Note that CPAN does not build these packages: we just provide the hyperlinks. So please don't ask to build a package for you: you have access to the plaftorm, not us. Also, this page lists operating systems, not hardware platforms: therefore Perl packages for, say, Linux PDAs or SONY Playstation, or XBox, or Tivo, or toasters, or so forth running Linux are not "ports" as such. There are, of course, exceptions to the above: if for some reason getting packages for the particular platform is hard (of example not that many people have the compiler environment for the platform, or there is no common repository for sharing packages), CPAN can consider hosting packages for such platforms. But if there is a commonly known repository to get packages in that particular platform, please first prefer uploading your Perl package there one instead of CPAN, because that common repository is where the users will go first. We can add a link to this page pointing to that common repository, of course. Note that this page is exceptional in CPAN in that we list some shareware and commercial software when it comes to Perl editors, IDEs, and SDKs. Anywhere else in CPAN we strongly disapprove any non-free (as in beer) software.

18. Perlfaq6
Pattern matching and regular expressions.
http://www.perldoc.com/perl5.6/pod/perlfaq6.html
Home About Contact What's New ... How do I match a pattern that is supplied by the user?
NAME
perlfaq6 - Regexes ($Revision: 1.27 $, $Date: 1999/05/23 16:08:30 $)
DESCRIPTION
This section is surprisingly small because the rest of the FAQ is littered with answers involving regular expressions. For example, decoding a URL and checking whether something is a number are handled with regular expressions, but those answers are found elsewhere in this document (in the section on Data and the Networking one on networking, to be precise).
How can I hope to use regular expressions without creating illegible and unmaintainable code?
Three techniques can make regular expressions maintainable and understandable.
Comments Outside the Regex
Describe what you're doing and how you're doing it, using normal Perl comments.
Comments Inside the Regex
The /x modifier causes whitespace to be ignored in a regex pattern (except in a character class), and also allows you to use normal comments there, too. As you can imagine, whitespace and comments help a lot. /x lets you turn this: into this: It's still not quite so clear as prose, but it is very useful for describing the meaning of each part of the pattern.
