    Tell us your opinion
Consultants with Oracle expertise will likely find themselves working with an ERP implementation. Here's a look at two common situations that you'll address: working with Oracle's database link and setting up embedded transactions Many in the IT world don't automatically think Oracle when they think ERP, though they well might, for Oracle is a formidable platform. Oracle's history is richer than its role as an ERP player. Its long tradition as a powerful and robust database platform, along with its cutting-edge technological evolution in high-volume efficiency, often tend to overshadow the fact that it is second only to SAP among ERP players. Perhaps it is its historical emphasis on database engineering, and the consequential subtlety of its application distribution mechanisms, that make integration and distribution of Oracle-based applications a bit intimidating to consultants, but they need not be. First in a series
This is the first article in a series that examines the role of Oracle databases in ERP.

What is PHP and what's it got to do with Oracle?
PHP is a recursive acronym for "PHP Hypertext Preprocessor". It is an open source, interpretive, HTML centric, server side scripting language. PHP is especially suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML pages. PHP is comparable to languages such as JSP (Java Server Pages) and Oracle's PSP (PL/SQL Server Pages). This FAQ describes how PHP interacts with the Oracle Database. It assumes that the reader has PHP installed and working. To test if PHP is working, create a simple PHP document, say hello.php: Execute hello.php from command line (php hello.php) or open it from a web browser (http://localhost/hello.php) to see the output. If it's not working, PHP is not correctly installed and this FAQ will not help you. Note that current versions of Oracle's HTTP Server (Apache) does not ship with PHP (mod_php) pre-installed and that Oracle does not support mod_php or the language itself; however, it may support configurations that include mod_php. Future releases of Oracle iAS (Internet Application Server) will support PHP and include instructions on how to install and use PHP.

Oracle on Tuesday revealed features planned for its forthcoming Oracle 10g database aimed at small and midsize businesses. Oracle 10g , slated for release by the end of the calendar year, will offer self-management features and quicker installation that will cut down on manual labor, said Robert Shimp, Oracle's vice president of technology marketing. He said the database giant is making an "aggressive" push into the midmarket. Oracle 10g is the company's update to its flagship database line, Oracle 9i. Oracle 10g is designed to allow companies to link multiple databases in a grid, or cluster, of several low-cost hardware servers. Grid computing unites pools of servers, storage systems and networks into one large system that better tackles complex computing jobs by sharing the workload across multiple machines. Click Here Customers will be able to install Oracle 10g from a single CD in as little as 17 minutes, compared with a few hours required for Oracle 9i, Shimp said. Oracle 10g also will include features that automate database administration, which means that ongoing maintenance will be minimal, he said.

    Chapter 1 Introducing Oracle
Where do we start? One of the problems in comprehending a massive product such as the Oracle database is the difficulty of getting a good sense of how the product works without getting lost in the details of implementing specific solutions. This book aims to solve this problem by giving you a thorough grounding in the concepts and technologies that form the foundation of Oracle's technology products: the Database Server (currently Oracle9 i ) and the Application Server (Oracle9 i AS). Oracle is also a provider of business applications, popularly named the "E-Business Suite"; discussion of those applications is outside the scope of this book, although we do touch on how technology components are being leveraged in linking Oracle's applications to non-Oracle applications and in building data warehouses.
