EROS: The Extremely Reliable Operating System
EROS is a new operating system being implemented at the University of Pennsylvania. The system merges some very old ideas in operating systems with some newer ideas about performance and resource management. The result is a small, secure, real-time operating system that provides orthogonal persistence. Effective April 14, 1999, the EROS website has moved to www.eros-os.org . Please update your links. How to transfer text files between Linux, Macintosh, and Microsoft Windows operating systems.

How to Transfer Text Files
Between
Linux, Macintosh, and Microsoft Windows
Operating Systems
Text files are often incompatible across operating systems. Why? Because different operating systems use different markers to indicate the end of a line. This can really mess you up if you are trying to transfer files from one operating system to another. The Macintosh uses a carriage return to end a line. A carriage return marking the end of a line is intuitive to anyone who is old enough to have ever used a typewriter. For those too young to know, an electric typewriter has a big key called a carriage return that automatically advances you to the next line. The carriage return is often referred to by the capital letters CR. On a Macintosh, every line has a CR at the end. Under Linux (a variant of Unix), the end of a line is indicated by a line feed . Every line ends with a line feed or LF. Calling the end of a line an LF versus a CR is not just semantics. These are 2 very real characters with 2 very real and very separate numeric representations on a computer. A CR is a 13 in the ASCII table of characters and an LF is a 10 in the ASCII table of characters. Contributing to the confusion is that fact that Microsoft Windows does things yet another way. Under Microsoft Windows, lines end with a combination of 2 characters a CR followed by a LF. Symbolically, this is represented as CRLF or carriage return, line feed.

The Bare Machine
Stacked Job Batch Systems (mid 1950s - mid 1960s)
A batch system is one in which jobs are bundled together with the instructions necessary to allow them to be processed without intervention. Often jobs of a similar nature can be bundled together to further increase economy The basic physical layout of the memory of a batch job computer is shown below: The monitor is system software that is responsible for interpreting and carrying out the instructions in the batch jobs. When the monitor started a job, it handed over control of the entire computer to the job, which then controlled the computer until it finished. A sample of several batch jobs might look like: $JOB user_spec ; identify the user for accounting purposes $FORTRAN ; load the FORTRAN compiler source program cards $LOAD ; load the compiled program $RUN ; run the program data cards $EOJ ; end of job $JOB user_spec ; identify a new user $LOAD application $RUN data $EOJ Often magnetic tapes and drums were used to store intermediate data and compiled programs.

There is not much doubt but that I am something of a "Unix Bigot." To this end, here are a number of references to "Unix Stuff" out on the Internet. Seeing as how the Internet was mostly created and implemented on Unix-based computers, this is inherently an extremely incomplete list. Many of the products/software components available under Linux are also usable on a variety of Unix operating systems.
1. The Unix Philosophy
The following principles have been extracted from the book The Unix Philosophy
1.1. Dogmatic Tenets
  • Small is beautiful Small functional programs are readily understood, applied, and reused, and there is not as much complexity amongst which bugs can hide. Make each program do one thing well Multiple useful programs can then be composed together to perform more complex functions. Prototype as soon as possible Early affirmation/denial of the validity of assumptions is really valuable.

Academic and industrial participants present research and experience papers that cover the full range of theory and practice. There will be a poster session and a work-in-progress session; in each case presenters will be chosen from brief proposals submitted to the program committee. Mark Weiser Award (nominations are due September 1). A scholarship program will be available to encourage student attendance. In addition, for the first time ever, SOSP will host the SIGOPS division of the ACM Student Research Competition

    http://www.csee.wvu.edu/~jdm/classes/cs258/OScat/
    A CATALOG OF OPERATING SYSTEMS
This is a classified, alphabetic listing of most operating systems, past and present, that have been distributed commercially or reported in the English-language literature. This extensive catalog is included because we believe that for the serious student who wishes to understand OS implementation, there is no substitute for studying a variety of actual systems. Most of the systems in this catalog have something to teach, and in many cases the best explanations are given by designers or users in the published literaure. The listing attempts to be as comprehensive as possible. However, it does not always distinguish closely-related versions or releases of the same OS, or reimplementations of substantially the same OS on different computers. Listed systems are limited to those which have actually been implemented (although perhaps only once), directly control the CPU hardware, and are general-purpose, at least within broad application areas (including business and real-time control). The operating systems are classified roughly into fourteen categories. Each category is explained briefly at the beginning of the section. The classification is somewhat arbitrary; many OSs could reasonably be placed in several classes. Those that are difficult to classify are placed in the miscellaneous section at the end.

    Java in Operating Systems Courses
Note: This web page has become extremely dated; the last addition was made in November of 2001, but before that nothing since May of 1997. This is because people stopped sending me things to add. If you don't want this page to be useless, send me links to more recent resources that should be added. This is a list of resources for using the Java programming language in courses on operating systems principles. There are four main approaches I know of to using Java in such a course:
    • Use Java to teach the principles of concurrent programming, not in particularly operating-systems related context.
    • Use Java to write individual operating system components. For example, it is possible to write a file system in Java.
    • Use Java to write a simulator for a full operating system, including the machine it is running on.
    • Use Java to write programs that make non-trivial use of operating-system services (such as network communication) in order to teach more about those services.
Given this variety of options, I expect the below list of resources to grow; please send me

    http://www.cs.washington.edu/research/projects/spin/www/
What if this were really really really important text up here?
    THE
    SPIN O PERATING S YSTEM
SPIN is an operating system that blurs the distinction between kernels and applications. Applications traditionally live in user-level address spaces, separated from kernel resources and services by an expensive protection boundary. With SPIN applications can specialize the kernel by dynamically linking new code into the running system. Kernel extensions can add new kernel services, replace default policies, or simply migrate application functionality into the kernel address space. Sensitive kernel interfaces are secured via a restricted linker and the type-safe properties of the Modula-3 programming language. The result is a flexible operating system that helps applications run fast but doesn't crash.
We have used SPIN to implement a wide variety of demanding applications and services. For instance, the SPIN Web server executes entirely in the kernel address space. This allows it to access the network and the local disk with low latency. The Web server application, as well as the file system interface, entire network protocol stack, and device infrastructure are all linked into the system after it boots.
