www.sonystyle.com In August, Government Computer News had an article that published the results of a Reader Survey they did relating to notebook computers. The survey measured reader interest in durability, battery life, display size or type, processing power, built-in CD-ROM drives, weight, hard drive size, integrated networking capability, price, size, built-in floppy disk drive, PC Card devices, internal modems, built-in pointing devices, multimedia capabilities, keyboard and docking hardware. The machines graded in the survey were by Dell Computing Corporation, Gateway, Toshiba and IBM and they were rated in that same order. Dell walked away with the honors in 12 of 17 categories. Gateway got 5 of 17 categories, Toshiba got 1 of 17 categories (they tied with Gateway) and IBM was the lowest in all categories. In this rapidly changing environment, it is critical to focus on the fundamental technological aspects that enable the concept of pervasive computing. Mobil Computing: Implementing Pervasive Information and Communication Technologies is designed to address some of the business and technical challenges of pervasive computing that encompass current and emerging technology standards, infrastructures and architectures, and innovative and high impact applications of mobile technologies in virtual enterprises. The various articles examine a host of issues including: the challenges and current solutions in mobile connectivity and coordination; management infrastructures; innovative architectures for fourth generation wireless and Ad-hoc networks; error-free frequency assignments for wireless communication; cost-effective wavelength assignments in optical communication networks; data and transaction modeling in a mobile environment, and bandwidth issues and data routing in mobile Ad-hoc networks.

August 2002 Mobile computing and HIPAA
Electronic storage and transmission of data poses some security risks whether the computer and communication systems are wireline or wireless. Unauthorized access, alteration or destruction of data, digital fraud and "denial of service" are types of security risks that can result in inaccurate records, legal liability, reduced customer confidence, and various costs associated with preventing, detecting and recovering from data security breaches.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 requires that healthcare provider organizations protect the confidentiality and security of all personally identifiable patient health information they collect, store, use or transmit, whether via paper or electronic methods. Mobile computing involves two unique risks - protection of data stored on devices that may be lost or stolen and protection of data that is transmitted during wireless transmission. HIPAA requires encryption of data during transmission. Some medical professionals use password protection on their PDAs. Others don't, saying it defeats the benefit of "instant on" speed and convenience that makes the devices so useful. Because open infrared ports can pose a security risk, many users ensure the ports remain closed except when beaming data.

by Matt Hamblen CHICAGO (IDG) Mobile computing vendors gathered here last week announced more options for remote workers. News Radio Computerworld Minute Fusion audio primers IT managers said they welcome choices but worry about getting stuck supporting an operating system or protocol that won't last in the market. "It's definitely daunting having to make choices in the current environment," said Jim Vannette, chairman of Holland Special Delivery, a delivery service in Holland, Mich., that's developing a mobile automation system for its drivers. "There's such a staggering array of options without standards."

MOBIL TRAVEL GUIDE AWARDS ON-DEMAND COMPUTING CONTRACT TO IBM
Oct 7th, 14:21 UTC IBM To Provide Leading Travel Service with Utility-Like Access to Server Processing, Storage and Networking Capacity Armonk, N.Y., October 4, 2002 ... IBM announced today that it has been awarded a contract by Mobil Travel Guide to provide the company with large-scale computing infrastructure on-demand over the Internet. The contract for on-demand mainframe and storage computing services is the first of its kind in the travel and transportation industry. Under terms of the 5-year agreement, IBM will provide the Illinois-based travel guide service with on-demand access to Linux-based server processing, storage and networking capacity from IBM e-business hosting centers in the United States. Instead of the physical Web, database and application servers they currently rely on, Mobil Travel Guide will tap into "virtual servers" on IBM zSeries mainframes and Enterprise Storage Servers running Linux, paying only for the computing power and capacity they require. Mobil Travel Guide will utilize the IBM computing resources to support the expansion of a new web-based service Mobil Companion which offers customized service for auto travelers. The Mobil Companion travel program targets upscale leisure auto travelers with benefits that include state of the art web-based travel planning, 24 hour enroute travel support services, upgraded services and preferred rates from hotels, restaurants and other travel service providers.
