Press Releases As part of its Information Assurance mission, the National Security Agency has long been involved with the computer security research community in investigating a wide range of computer security topics including operating system security. Recognizing the critical role of operating system security mechanisms in supporting security at higher levels, researchers from NSA's Information Assurance Research Group have been investigating an architecture that can provide the necessary security functionality in a manner that can meet the security needs of a wide range of computing environments. End systems must be able to enforce the separation of information based on confidentiality and integrity requirements to provide system security. Operating system security mechanisms are the foundation for ensuring such separation. Unfortunately, existing mainstream operating systems lack the critical security feature required for enforcing separation: mandatory access control. As a consequence, application security mechanisms are vulnerable to tampering and bypass, and malicious or flawed applications can easily cause failures in system security.

Forward in Format for A new Linux-only mainframe model that IBM will announce Friday is the strongest indication so far of the company's enthusiasm for uniting the comparatively new operating system with the decades-old business computer line. The refrigerator-sized machine running only Linux will be formally announced at the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo show in New York next week and will begin shipping by the end of March, said Pete McCaffrey, director of IBM's zSeries mainframe group. IBM hopes to lure new customers to the mainframe line with the system because it costs less than a full-fledged mainframe and doesn't require the usual high level of mainframe management skills, he said. "I would say that most industry analysts right now are probably impressed with the speed with which Linux has been adopted on the mainframe," said Giga Information Group analyst David Mastrobattista. "It's only been on the mainframe for a little over a year now." Indeed, IBM boasts that 11 percent of the mainframe computing processing power sold in the fourth quarter of 2001 was for running Linux jobs. This computing power, which can come either from new systems or from switching on idle processors in existing systems, is measured in the arcane unit known as MIPS (millions of instructions per second).

  • Efficient support for all types of audio interfaces, from consumer soundcards to professional multichannel audio interfaces.
  • Fully modularized sound drivers.
  • SMP and thread-safe design.
  • User space library ( alsa-lib ) to simplify application programming and provide higher level functionality.
  • Support for the older OSS API, providing binary compatibility for most OSS programs. ALSA is released under the GPL (GNU General Public license) and the LGPL (GNU Lesser General Public License). We need users to use, test and provide feedback, programmers to work on low level drivers, writers to extend and improve our documentation, and application developers who choose to use ALSA as the basis for their programs. Linux Advocacy in Embedded Systems
San Jose, CA USA September 30th, 1999 As I mentioned yesterday, the Embedded Systems Conference has come at a very critical time for vendors using Linux, thinking about usng Linux or running companies based on Linux. It has provided a good opportunity for a lot of key players to come together, meet, exchange ideas and form partnerships for the future. One project coming into focus as a result of that is advocacy for Linux in embedded systems. Lineo held a client meeting this morning with many of their partners and potential partners to discuss ways to promote Linux in the embedded systems market. They asked for feedback on the idea of creating an entity to promote and advocate Linux on embedded systems. They got a very positive response overall. Discussion ranged around the idea of forming a non-profit, vendor-based group like Linux International, but focused on Linux on embedded systems. Why is a separate organization being considered for embedded systems? That's a good question. Taking a look at the existing computer market does provide some answers, though. Embedded systems is a highly technical area with its own jargon. Historically, the mainstream press has followed this area only very superficially, if at all. Note as a result the success of magazines like EETimes, which focus on it more narrowly. The concerns of the vendors currently involved in Linux International are not necessarily the same as the vendors in the embedded systems area.
