82. A Quantitative Profile Of A Community Of Open Source Linux Developers
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, study histories, analyses, explanations.
http://metalab.unc.edu/osrt/develpro.html
A Quantitative Profile of a Community of Open Source Linux Developers Bert J Dempsey, Debra Weiss, Paul Jones, and Jane Greenberg UNC Open Source Research Team (see note 1) School of Information and Library Science University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Chapel Hill, North Carolina 27599-3360 osrt@metalab.unc.edu October 6, 1999 Abstract Introduction Open source development communities have successfully created, distributed, and continued to evolve many important software projects-the GNU project's utilities and libraries including the gcc compiler and Emacs editor, the Perl and Tcl languages, the Apache WWW server, and the Linux and FreeBSD operating system. Open source, or free software, means more than access to source code (see Appendix A), and there is not universal agreement on a single open-source development model. Nonetheless, the guiding principle for open source software is that, by sharing source code, developers cooperate under a model of rigorous peer-review and take advantage of "parallel debugging" that leads to innovation and rapid advancement in developing and evolving software products. Open-source licensing, moreover, ensures an open market in integration and support for these products downstream. A prime difficulty in understanding and drawing conclusions about open source collaborative development has been the sketchy information available on exactly who participates in open source development and how their software archives evolve. This lack of information is understandable given the distributed, organic process of collaborative development in open source communities.

The gift economy and free software
Saturday June 05, 2004 (08:00 AM GMT)
Topics: Free Software
By: Jem Matzan A "gift economy" is a social system in which status is given by how much one shares or gives to one's community, as opposed to an "exchange economy" where status is given to those who own or control the most stuff. In today's world we're used to the latter economic philosophy, as it has been closely affiliated with the capitalist system since at least the Industrial Revolution and the invention of the corporation. But the Industrial Age is over this is the Information Age now, and things are changing.

Goals
The basic goal of the High Availability Linux project is to: Provide a high-availability (clustering) solution for Linux which promotes reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) through a community development effort. The Linux-HA project is widely used, and is an important component in many interesting High-Availability solutions. We currently have a few thousand installations up in production in the real world. We are also work well with the LVS (Linux Virtual Server) project and expect to collaborate with them in the future, since our goals are complementary. Interest in this project is growing very rapidly. These web pages are averaging more than thousands of hits per day, and we see several thousand downloads of the software per month. Heartbeat now ships as part of SuSE Linux Conectiva Linux , and Mandrake Linux MSC Linux , and Debian GNU/Linux Mission Critical Linux built one of their earlier products on it.

THE LINUX LIFE
Using your Palm device with Linux
By Jason Perlow
The Linux operating system user base has been growing by leaps and bounds over the last year, due to a combination of factors: the explosion of the open source phenomenon; improvements in Linux that make it more palatable to end-users; and a general anti-Microsoft sentiment that has been sweeping some among the power-user community. Until recently, however, Linux users have been lacking tools to allow them the same level of Palm device interoperability their Windows and Macintosh-using peers have been enjoying for quite some time. But that's no longer the case. In this article, we'll help you set up Linux to work with your Palm device, show you how to get HotSync operations working, and explore some tasty desktop solutions. If you're not a Linux user, you'll find this article interesting. But you should know that we're aiming the article at already established Linux users. If you've got questions, feel free to post them on the PowerBoards. A link to the appropriate discussion board is at the end of the article. Setting up the HotSync connection
Assuming you've got your favorite Linux distribution up and running, the first thing you'll want to do is connect your HotSync cradle to an available communications port. In most Linux distributions (such as Red Hat 6.0) the first two serial COM ports are mapped to /dev/cua0 and /dev/cua1, but it might be /dev/ttys0 or /dev/ttys1.

The FIRST step towards finding a Linux driver is identifying the modem's CHIPSET . The scanModem tool will help you. Please download and run the scanModem tool before sending any query to discuss@linmodems.org. The chipset will be recognized and cogent updated knowledge and URLs written out. The manufacturer brand with model number are generally NOT informative in this regard. Modems from a single manufacturer can have different chips. But your documentation may have this critical information, so read it carefully. For PCI card modems, a database can be searched. A broader database is also available. Controller based modems utilize the "standard" serial drivers, while the winmodems in most newer PCs and laptops require their own drivers.
