121. Making Sense Of Java
A beginner's FAQ aimed at people who know almost nothing about java.
http://www.disordered.org/Java-QA.html
There is as much misinformation about Java as there is information. On this page I have listed some common claims and beliefs about Java, along with a description of how accurate the claims are and where they go astray: Java is a language for writing web pages; it's like HTML and VRML Java is easy to learn and use, unlike C, C++ and other programming languages ... Java will replace C++ as the language of choice This is not a tutorial on Java ; at best it's an effort to respond to the wild claims made about Java in the press and companies' marketing literature. For more information and commentary, take a look at Marty Hall's Java resource site.
Java is a language for writing web pages; it's like HTML and VRML
Java isn't a page description language like HTML. It's a programming language. Description languages specify content and placement; programming languages describe a process for generating a result. Where there is generally a direct mapping between an HTML description of a document and the result, the relationship between a Java program and its result is likely to be more complex. It's a little like the difference between a list of square roots of numbers from zero to 10 and a program to calculate the list. Here's an HTML table of square roots:
sqrt(1) = 1
sqrt(2) = 1.41421

Lars Appel's HPe3000 Page
On this page you can find several pieces of software that I was able to port to MPE/iX, the "legacy" operating system of the HP 3000 line of computers. This is not your parent's HP 3000 any more! It has evolved over the last 25+ years and still remained extremely compatible to itself. How many other platforms do you know, that can run 10 or 20 year old programs, some even written for a CPU architecture that predates PA-RISC, in most cases without any changes or even recompiling? And all this side by side with Posix based client-server applications like Apache or Samba and modern object-oriented programming languages like Java? But better don't let me get on my "Cinderella" or "Sleeping Beauty" soapbox ;-) Please notice that I ported the freeware available on this page to MPE/iX because I had some personal need to have it available on MPE/iX or sometimes also just for fun or out of curiousity. It worked fine for me but I did not perform extensive testing. I'm sharing it here in case you might also find it useful (and don't want to reinvent that wheel). Feel free to pick it up and use it, but be aware that you do this at your own risk and that this software is totally unsupported. Don't blame me (or anybody else) if something doesn't work as expected or even causes damage! Also have a look at the license files that come with each package (typically the GNU General Public License) to get an idea what you may or may not do with the software.

Trail: Internationalization
by Dale Green
The lessons in this trail teach you how to internationalize Java applications. Internationalized applications are easy to tailor to the customs and languages of end users around the world. Note: This tutorial trail covers core internationalization functionality, which is the foundation required by additional features provided for desktop, enterprise, and mobile applications. For additional information, see the Java Internationalization home page Introduction defines the term internationalization, gives a quick sample program, and provides a checklist you can use to internationalize an existing program. Setting the Locale explains how to create and how to use Locale objects. Isolating Locale-Specific Data shows how to dynamically access objects that vary with Locale Formatting explains how to format numbers, dates, and text messages according to Locale , and how to create customized formats with patterns. Working with Text provides techniques for manipulating text in a locale-independent manner.

The GNU Compiler for the Java tm Programming Language
What is GCJ?
GCJ is a portable, optimizing, ahead-of-time compiler for the Java Programming Language. It can compile:
  • Java source code directly to native machine code, Java source code to Java bytecode (class files), and Java bytecode to native machine code.
Compiled applications are linked with the GCJ runtime, libgcj , which provides the core class libraries, a garbage collector, and a bytecode interpreter. libgcj can dynamically load and interpret class files, resulting in mixed compiled/interpreted applications. Most of the APIs specified by "The Java Class Libraries" Second Edition and the "Java 2 Platform supplement" are supported, including collections, networking, reflection, and serialization. AWT is currently unsupported, but work to implement it is in progress. Debugging is supported using recent versions of the GNU debugger

does not allow thirdparty sites to use the word java in the title. Applets. My growing collection of home-made java programs for the web. Feedback.
http://www.javaonthebrain.com/
Welcome, noble netsurfer! Why the asterisk? Because Sun Microsystems, Inc. does not allow third-party sites to use the word "Java" in the title. There is no such restriction for domain names, however. The material on this site has been organized into six categories:
Intro. This page, which outlines the contents of the site. Artwork. This only has a few scattered items yet. Applets. My growing collection of home-made Java programs for the web. Feedback. A list of Frequently Asked Questions and my not always polite answers. Goals. A fairly extensive outline of what I want to accomplish. Links. This should be pretty much self-explanatory. In order to protect myself from e-mail spam, I have no textual references to my address on this site just the graphical representation of text you see in the bottom right corner. Automated address-hunting programs are unable to read such information, but human visitors should have no problems with it.

The goals of the Numerics Working Group of the Java Grande Forum are (1) to assess the suitability of Java for numerical computation, (2) to work towards community consensus on actions which can be taken to overcome deficiencies of the language and its run-time environment, and (3) to encourage the development of APIs for core mathematical operations. 137. Java Regular Expressions
Provides a package to perform Regular Expressions in java. Documentation and download including source.
http://www.crocodile.org/~sts/Rex/
Installation:
Download the package.
- Extract the files:
gzip -d
- The directory tree containing the package classes will be created.
Also there will be a testing program called rx
It is a shell script and for it to work properly in your environment
you should make JAVA and CLASSPATH variables inside the
script point to the appropriate locations on your system.
Running the Test:
- at your shell prompt type:
./rx regexp filename
An alternative invocation performs a specific test known as Khadafy.
It's distributed as part of GNU grep and I found it quite useful. To run it you should type: ./rx -test khadafy.inp
The package is distributed under the terms of the GNU Library General Public Lisense
