Twelve reasons to use Ada 95 for java applet.

Twelve reasons to use Ada 95
for Java applet development
  • Ada 95 is an ISO standard. The language definition has been stable for some time. This means, there is a large body of existing Ada code available for reuse in applet development. Also, as a standard Ada 95 potentially isolates applet developers from the still-evolving Java VM definition.
  • True compilers for Ada 95 are available for many hosts and targets , allowing easy reuse of code developed outside the Ada/Java world for applets, and reuse of code developed under Ada/Java in other environments. For example, if you develop a sophisticated game in Ada/Java, one could then compile it into machine code for an existing game machine for delivery in a game cartridge. Similarly, if you develop a graphically-oriented client/server front end in Ada/Java, one could compile it into machine code for delivery on a floppy disk to run full-speed on a PC that has no Java capability.
  • Ada was developed with many of the same language design principles that led to Java. Although the developers of Java started with C++ as their "base language" they made changes where they found C++ to be lacking. Many of these changes are right in line with Ada's own design philosophy. [

Grendel is a mail/news reader entirely written in Java. Its goal is to be a true cross-platform application with a feature set that satisfies the poweruser. Jeff (talisman) is taking a brief hiatus while he gets his company started. Please continue to feel free to contribute code and such to the Grendel project. Just don't expect to see much work coming from Jeff in the short term. The Grendel source tree has been reorganized, so if you have pulled the source previously, you'll need to update with cvs update -P (that's a capital P), so CVS will prune the directories and files which are no longer used. Support for building with Apple's Project Builder on Mac OS X is now checked in and working. The project's files are all referenced via project-relative references, so you should have no trouble. If you happen to see a file in the Files pane (except in the Products group) which is red , you'll need to change the path Project Builder uses to reference that file (or get the file and put it in the right place, per README.build). This is most likely to happen with the required external jars. If you need to select the jars, do so by clicking on something else in the Files pane first, then use the arrow keys on your keyboard to select the jar file name. Otherwise, Project Builder will attempt to open the jar file in the editor. It won't hurt anything as long as you don't save the file, but it's pretty disconcerting nonetheless. See Project Builder Help (Command-?) for details on how to do this.

the Rule Engine for the Java TM Platform New! Jess 6.1p7 is now available for download. This release fixes a deadlock issue and several other minor bugs. Jess is a rule engine and scripting environment written entirely in Sun's Java TM language by Ernest Friedman-Hill at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, CA. Jess was originally inspired by the CLIPS expert system shell, but has grown into a complete, distinct, dynamic environment of its own. Using Jess , you can build Java software that has the capacity to "reason" using knowledge you supply in the form of declarative rules. Jess is small, light, and one of the fastest rule engines available. The core Jess language is still compatible with CLIPS, in that many Jess scripts are valid CLIPS scripts and vice-versa. Like CLIPS, Jess uses the Rete algorithm to process rules, a very efficient mechanism for solving the difficult many-to-many matching problem (see for example "Rete: A Fast Algorithm for the Many Pattern/ Many Object Pattern Match Problem", Charles L. Forgy, Artificial Intelligence 19(1982), 17-37 Jess adds many features to CLIPS, including backwards chaining, working memory queries, and the ability to manipulate and directly reason about Java objects.

    • Open Discussion: Talk about anything, as long as it's related to JGProg or general genetic programming issues, unless the message topic would fit better in one of the other two forums. More for users of JGProg and anyone interested in genetic programming. Help: Ask (and obtain!) help in using JGProg, but not non-JGProg issues in genetic programming, which properly belongs in the Open Discussion forum. For example, a question about the best population size or crossover probability for a particular problem is not a problem in using the JGProg program, since you could use any genetic programming platform. Developers: Talk about further developing JGProg, bugs in JGProg, desired features in JGProg.
