Home Automation with Mac OS X, Part 1
by Alan Graham When some people hear the words "home automation," they think about the Jetsons or multi-million-dollar concept homes of the future. Others think home automation is just a geek fantasy that wouldn't add any real value to their lives. They would be wrong. Home automation is actually relatively affordable to set up. Anyone with very basic Mac OS X skills can design and program their own system. In this series I'll discuss why to use home automation, what you'll need to set it up, and advanced topics such as home video surveillance and remote administration. And if you happen to be a fan of the Homemade Dot Mac series, we'll tie that in, as well. Why Home Automation?

Home Automation with Mac OS X, Part 2
by Alan Graham The first article in this series focused on the basic equipment you'll need to set up a home automation system. In this installment, I'm going to dig deeper into the hardware and show you some tips I've learned from my experiences.
Q: What about cost? Could you give us an idea of how much it cost for all your home automation? A: I have quite a large system. However, let's just look at the backbone of my system as it pertains to this article:
  • 2 transceiver modules 1 PowerLinc USB 1 copy of Indigo home automation software 3 Appliance modules 1 Super socket module 2 lamp modules 3 wall switch modules 3 2-way lamp modules 2 socket rocket lamp modules 2 screw-in lamp modules 1 keychain remote 1 super remote 1 palm pad controller 2 slimline switches 3 motion detectors 1 SignalLinc plug-in phase coupler
Using a combination of eBay and the X10, Smarthome, and Perceptive Automation sites, I found that I could buy all of these items for about $430. Your mileage may vary (your needs may also be less/more than mine). I would also like to point out that Smarthome manufactures a number of X10-compatible devices that are not only affordable, but also more versatile than their X10 counterparts. I'm focusing more on X10-branded components, because that is what I have.

What is Environmental Control?
  • A system permitting remote control of electronic devices in the immediate surroundings. A person can independently turn lights, radio, and television on and off, answer or initiate phone calls, and unlock a door. Essentially any aspect of the environment can be controlled depending upon the system's complexity.
  • A hardware or software system allowing the user programmed or spontaneous control over remote, electrically operated appliances. Categories:

  • document.write("print this article")

  • suggest an article Introduction An area I have been interested in for a long time is home automation. Essentially, home automation is the ability to control devices around your house from your PC. For example, if you go away on holidays, you could schedule your PC to rotate your lights on a normal schedule. Turn them all off during the day, then back on in the evening and finally all off again at night. This of course would give the impression that you are at home and potentially thwart robbery attempts. Other examples would be having the coffee pot and toaster automatically begin at 7:00 am and controlling the temperature of your house on a given schedule, etc. I have chosen to focus on one specific home automation product for this article, the X10 Firecracker System. It is an extremely inexpensive and easy-to-use product and will give us the most basic understanding of home automation potential. You will need to purchase and install the hardware to take full advantage of this article. Personally I just hit eBay and grabbed a few of the devices from a few vendors. Usually you can find everything much cheaper than from the X10.com site itself, not to mention not having to deal with X10's ads.

Many thanks to those who attended my Mac Home Automation talk at the MacWorld Expo on January 7, 2000. I'm happy with how the presentation went, especially given the limited amount of time there was to talk about so much! I apologize for not having enough handouts; I just didn't realize the amount of interest. Well over 100 people attended the presentation. If you didn't get a handout, or if you didn't attend and want to see what I talked about, I've placed the entire presentation online here . (This version also corrects one typo in a URL; MouseHouse is www.mousehouse.net , NOT www.mousehouse.com as in my original handout - sorry!.)
If you have any questions on anything covered in the presentation, just let me know!
In 1997, I built a new house . I also began to play with home automation. This page is to serve as an example of some neat things one can do with home automation. The system is certainly in constant flux. Over time I'll be adding all kinds of stuff, and I'll try to keep things relatively up-to-date on this page. As this page is rapidly growing, I'll soon have to split it into multiple parts. If you are new to home automation

Are there off-the-shelf technologies to control your home's heat, lights, audio and video equipment, security system, and home office network that don't require special wiring and an MIT engineering degree to install?
    The short answer: Yes.
So, if you're like most people, you live in a house that has standard copper wiring. That's all you need to integrate basic home automation affordably and without much fuss, Ainscough says. Here are four scenarios to spotlight how you can get home automation affordably:
    • Scenario 1: An automated home security system Scenario 2: A network of your home PCs and peripherals Scenario 3: A multi-room audio system Scenario 4: A whole-house automated system to control everything from one panel, from heat and lights to security
