HISTORY OF COMPUTERS AND COMPUTING
Module Code : Level : A Semester Available : Credits : Catalogue Entry This module traces the history of calculating devices and the development of computer hardware and software from the time of the first electronic computers in the 1950s to the present day. It illustrates how certain key concepts in current hardware and software (e.g. subroutines, stacks) build upon concepts introduced many years ago. Pre-requisites : First Year students: GCSE Computing or equivalent. Second Year students: Co-requisites : Aims This module examines the history of calculating devices over the centuries and then traces the development of computer hardware and software from the time of the first electronic computers in the 1950s to the present day. In doing so, it will illustrate how certain key concepts in current hardware and software (e.g. subroutine calls, microprogramming, registers and stacks) build upon concepts introduced many years ago. Transferable Skills The ability to relate the historical context of various computer science developments to a deeper understanding of the use of these concepts in modern software and hardware systems. Description The module commences with a brief introduction of mechanical computing devices (particularly Babbage's attempts at developing a stored-program, computer in the early 19th Century). We then move on via other mechanical calculation devices to a brief survey of the groundwork for computer design that was embodied in cryptanalytical machinery used in World War II.

Sun. June 6, 2004 The History of Computers with VIDEO CLIP The history of computers is not just the story of a specialized machine but of a great idea and the people who made it happen. Initially designed as large-scale calculators, computers have quickly become indispensable tools in every field of endeavor. This fascinating program traces the course of technological innovations leading up to today's computers, from Charles Babbage and his analytical engine of the 1860s to the latest laptops. All the major concepts, advances, and companies are explored using demonstrations, expert commentary, and historic film footage and interviews. The program shows how ideas such as Boolean logic, the binary system, magnetic/iron core memory, and microprocessors have dramatically increased the capacity of computers while drastically reducing their size, a phenomenon known as Moore's Law. The personal computer or PC boom is easily seen as an inevitable event, with software programmers such as Steve Jobs and Bill Gates emerging as its leaders. A Cambridge Educational Production.

The History of Computers The history of computers goes a long way back. The first ones were tools for calculating like the abacus. Gradually the simple machines grew to be the fast multipurpose computers we have today. During WWII, both sides were using computers to decipher enemy messages. More and faster computers were developed. After the war, scientists continued the research in peace. This time the information was shared. Now because the information is shared, technology really sped up. Home Timeline One of the Uses Links

~ INVESTIGATING COMPUTERS ~ Computers and computer use have become part of our everyday routines. Aside from writing papers, playing games on the internet and Instant Messaging your friends, how much do you REALLY know about computers?
This investigation will take you back in time to explore the history of computers. Using the provided links you will learn about the first computer (is it really a computer?), and will learn some key names associated with the development of computers. You will also voyage into the middle of a computer to learn about its parts and their functions. By the end of you investigation you will become more familiar with computers and will be able to apply you newly attained knowledge into daily computer use.
YOUR TASK
Your first task is to take a good look at the history of computers. Your investigation should answer the following questions:
  • What is considered to be the first computer? When was the first computer created? Who were the key players in developing the first computer? Around what time period was the home computer invented?

In the beginning...
About 50 years ago, the Synoptic and Dynamical Research Sub-committee of the Meteorological Research Committee recommended that the Met Office obtain an electric desk-calculator, and recruit a mathematician specially trained in computational methods, to enable the office to undertake trial meteorological computations. So it was, with such basic equipment, not even capable of automatic multiplication, that the Met Office began to fulfill the dream of L.F. Richardson, when in 1922 he suggested the possibility of numerical weather prediction using a grand 'forecast factory'- consisting of thousands of (human) computers, seated around a globe shaped auditorium, each one calculating the future state of the atmosphere at a fixed location by evaluating a set of equations. In the ten years following the purchase of the electrical desk-calculator, a small number of Met Office staff had access to a 'real' computer - the LEO 1 - which had been built by Lyons, the caterers. Eventually, in 1959 the Met Office purchased its first computer - a Ferranti Mercury, which the office named Meteor. With glowing valves and copious volumes of paper tape, the Met Office had entered the computer age.

For a history timeline of JUST the computer industry, view the PC History document. Welcome to the history of technology. This chronology, or timeline if you wish starts in 3000 BC and Stonehenge and travels through the 21st century, the Internet, and advanced computer systems. This page will take you through history, the invention of the light bulb to Windows Server 2003. From the very early days of pre-electric where we discovered time, math, and clocks, to the present can be a long journey. The 1800's saw the creation and development of lights, radios, movies, and the theory of the computer. Then we moved into the 1900's through WW II which saw airplanes, IBM, public radio, and TV come to the public. After WW II we saw VCRs, microwave ovens, cable TV, NASA and space travel. The thirty odd years since the development of the micro-processor and RAM were filled with notable events. In the 1970's we developed e-mail, microprocessors, video games, and saw Apple and Microsoft launched, and the first home computer was available. Then in
