Working on Free Software Lots of programmers want to get started on a free software project, but aren't quite sure how things work. This page is an informal collection of "unwritten rules and understandings" for people who'd like to volunteer. I learned some of this by making the mistakes, and I still flagrantly violate my own suggestions sometimes; these are only rough guidelines. :-) I'm sure other people would come up with a different set, too. Don't start by launching your own project. Lots of people want to write free software, so the first thing they do is scribble some code, slap on the GPL, and release version 0.0.1 alpha. While fun and possibly educational, this is totally unproductive. Here's why: It's more educational to read and learn from other people's code by adding small features here and there, or fixing some bugs. Most projects have a bug tracker; for example, on the Gnome project we have bugs.gnome.org , Debian has the same system , etc. Find a bug in the tracker, and fix it. Or add a feature you've been wanting.

Citing violations of human rights, the hackers vowed to punish those countries by destroying their computer systems. This virtual call to arms went largely unnoticed by most of the world, and the threat of destruction never materialized. But it created an uproar in the cyberunderground: A coalition of hacking groups, known for their staunch independence and insular rivalries, issued an unprecedented joint statement condemning the audacious declaration and ''any attempt to use hacking to threaten or destroy the information infrastructure of any country.'' Legions of Underground quickly backed down. The incident intensified an ongoing debate about ''hacktivism'' - the use of computers to advance political causes. The term, coined in recent months, covers everything from animal rights groups defacing the Web pages of fur companies to the use of computers by dissidents to promote democracy in totalitarian regimes. Targeted Web sites have included government pages of Indonesia and India, Mexico and China, as well as sites operated by NASA, the US Army, and the Department of Defense. The tools range from legitimate e-mail campaigns to on-line graffiti to software programs with names like Back Orifice and Floodnet. Political activists, who until recently got their message across through rallies and marches and sit-ins and slogans, are taking their causes on line in record numbers; they are now engaging in what they call ''electronic civil disobedience.'' Don't worry, this is completely acceptable behaviour in robotics. This section is going to describe how to take a R/C servo and make it into an excellent gearhead motor. The changes are quite easy to do, once you have seen the insides. This modification is known to work quite well on Futaba S-148 servos, which are commonly available. The theory behind this hack is to make the servo think that the output shaft is always at the 90 degree mark. This is done by removing the feedback sensor, and replacing it with an equivalent circuit that creates the same readings as the sensor being at 90 degrees. Thus, giving it the signal for degrees will cause the motor to turn on full speed in one direction. The signal for 180 degrees will cause the motor to go the other direction. Since the feedback from the output shaft is disconnected, the servo will continue in the appropriate direction as long as the signal remains. The result of this is a really nice compact gearhead motor with built in electronics. The interface to this motor unit is a 1 wire control line, +5 volts for power, and a ground. All of this for around $15, which is an outstanding deal.
