's monthly column February 1998 The World of Fonts No other design discipline requires so much learning and training as fontography, and by no other aspect can amateurs be so easily distinguished from professionals. To be font literate, a designer has to study the history and the principles of font design.
o far, fonts as a design topic have received only occasional mentions in the Design Lab pages. This is not because I was unaware of their importance; on the contrary, I just didn't feel comfortable with such a huge and complicated topic. Finally, I've pulled together enough material to write a coherent font design introduction, a set of basics which (in my opinion) one should master to be able to use fonts the right way. I hope this article will become a valuable addition to the design course that this column has become. The article is not, of course, nearly as comprehensive as a good textbook on the subject. There are lots of books about the design and use of fonts, probably not much less than about design proper; the field is, so to say, very densely populated because of its practical importance and rich historic traditions. So I feel justified in dropping many of the finer points that you can relatively easily find in other sources. Instead, as it was with

EasyFont Pro
The latest version of the award winning font management software. This new version is now 32 bit safe and has been tested on the Iyonix. Note - With early copies of the Iyonix compatible EasyFont Pro DrFonty, supplied on the CD, was not 32 bit safe. You can now download the 32 bit upgrade but note that this can only be used with the version of DrFonty supplied with the Iyonix compatible version of EasyFont Pro. EasyFont Pro makes handling fonts a doddle. Simply click to turn fonts on or off, not sure what fonts are used in a file? Simply drop the file into EasyFont and it will find the fonts used and turn them on itself. If you have got fonts you need EasyFont Pro! Now with printed manual! This is available separately
  • Supplied on CD with over 2000 fonts.
  • Version 5 is much faster than earlier versions of EasyFont.
  • WYSIWYG font display plus drag and drop font changing.
  • Saves up to 30% of your disk space when storing fonts.
  • File scanning, drop a file into EasyFont and the fonts get turned on!

Greetings Weary Traveller, I'd like to welcome you to FlatEarth.com. Get comfortable, have a seat, and sip a draught of some hearty ale. I'd like to introduce you to the FlatEarth world and what we are all about, so that you can understand what goes on here at FlatEarth.com. You'll have to excuse us, we just moved to a new server and Webwiz is getting everything back up and running. So we may be missing some things here and there. Our main course at FlatEarth is Webwizard's (the creator of FlatEarth) extensive Font collection. Seeing as we just switched servers the fonts are not available yet because there are so many, but it is the top priority on Webwiz's list and should be up in a few weeks at most. Next we have the Roleplaying part of FlatEarth. There are four main sections of it. The Common Room, The Arena, Private Rooms, and the World of Caeldera. To view these all you should visit

    Writing With Elvish Fonts
This is a tutorial for some of the fonts and tools that can be used for writing in Tengwar on a Windows PC.

    About this tutorial
[ToC] This tutorial will show how the Tengwar , J.R.R. Tolkien's Elvish letters can be used under Windows. We will use Daniel Smith's Tengwar fonts (and compatible ones). First, we consider the problems of encoding and typing Tengwar, and the support that is available from software tools. After that, examples of using some of the tools are given. The text is primarily targeted for readers with little or no previous experience in using the Tengwar. On the other hand, I will not try to teach how the writing system itself works, only to demonstrate how to input characters. Sources for learning about Tengwar are suggested in the section Further reading Some of the tools that are introduced here can in fact be used without knowing much about the Tengwar, but the user should be aware of their limitations. For most languages, automatic transcription from the Latin alphabet to Tengwar cannot be completely accurate. In particular, Tolkien's methods for writing English in Tengwar are not easy to reproduce by a software tool. The orthographies he invented were often influenced by both the traditional spelling of English and the actual pronunciation, which causes problems when these two do not have a straightforward relationship. The Elvish languages are simpler in this respect, but occasional etymological spellings complicate things.

    http://home.att.net/~jameskass/
Does Your Browser Support Multi-language ?
... and would you like to see what's in those really BIG fonts ?
Unicode is the World's standard for encoding text. Most all of the characters used in modern writing systems have already been assigned to unique code positions and work is under way to add some fairly exotic modern scripts as well as provide standardized encoding for ancient scripts. If your browser has multilingual capabilities, it probably uses Unicode to address the various letters, characters, and symbols shown on your screen.
If you're using Windows 2000, you already have a Unicode-aware system along with special tools, such as the enhanced Character Map, enabling use and display of special character from large fonts like MS Hei, MS Song, GulimChe, or MingLiU. (Beware that W2K Character Map does not offer all of the valid Unicode ranges and thus often can't offer all of the glyphs in a font's repertoire.)
But, if you're using an older operating system, you may have tried to see some of those special characters and become fairly frustrated when your font viewer failed or totally choked-up.
