Data Formats
The INTERMAGNET Operations Committee defines and publishes data formats for use by INTERMAGNET participants. The data produced by INTERMAGNET will use one of these formats: Due to the method that is used to record geomagnetic data it is not possible to make continuous measurements of the absolute value of the Earth's magnetic field. Instead a continuous record of variations in the field is made automatically, usually using computer controlled instrumentation. These data are made available as a preliminary data set, called reported data . The first operation that occurs on the data is the removal of any contamination (such as might be caused by instrumentation faults or man-made interference). The resulting data set is called adjusted data . This is then combined with a baseline that has been calculated from regular spot-values of the absolute field, which are made periodically using manual observation techniques. The combined data set, called

SIGRID-3 Development
Global Digital Sea Ice Data Bank (GDSIDB)
GDSIDB Data Formats
The data formats for the GDSIDB are Sea Ice Grid (SIGRID, sometimes called SIGRID-1), SIGRID-2, and SIGRID-3. These formats, and related formats, are described below.
SIGRID
On sea ice charts, ice parameters are represented by symbols and accompanying numbers giving the values of the ice parameters. The symbols varied depending on what nation was compiling the chart until the 1980s, when an international standard was developed by the WMO. The WMO "egg code," which gets its name from the shape of the symbol, is now used for most sea ice charts. The U.S. National Ice Center Web site has an explanation of the egg code ) and examples of operational ice charts. SIGRID is an alphanumeric coding of ice chart information obtained by overlaying a grid on the original paper chart and encoding the ice information in each grid cell. Thompson (1981) provides a description of the proposal for SIGRID-1 (also PDF , 58 KB). The Annex to Recommendation II (CMM-X) (available by request from

GLOBE Claritas seismic data processing: Data Formats
Index Claritas Licensing Flexibility ... Ethernet GLOBE Claritas has modules for reading SEG-Y, SEG-B, SEG-D, SEG-2 and SEG-1 input, and for SEG-Y output. SEG-D Revision 1 and 2 input formats are supported. The READSEGY module has a range of features allowing it to read many SEG-Y variants, including options for byte-swapping, 2- and 4-byte integer and 3- and 4-byte real data samples, missing headers etc. You can also override the default byte assignments for any header word as the tape/discfile is read in. The internal Claritas data format is a modified form of SEG-Y. The data is stored as IEEE floating-point values in the native byte-ordering, plus some additions to the reel and trace headers. The Claritas extended SEG-Y files also have associated index files which contain maps of the primary and secondary keys in the file - this allows for efficient random access to any part of the file, and fast on-the-fly sorting without creating intermediate sort files. Files larger than 2Gb are supported by Claritas under Compaq/Tru64, DEC-OSF

Text vs. Binary Data formats
More Articles When I'm doing some project that requires storing and retrieving data, I usually have a mental argument about how to structure the files. Should I use flat text, or some binary format (typically Perl dbm files)? The answer almost always should be "flat text", but old habits die hard. I started doing this stuff when computers were much slower in every respect, and were severely limited (by todays standards) in both disk and ram. As hard as it may be to imagine, storing a year in two digits or four was an important decision - with a 100,000 record database storing just 4 date fields, you'd waste almost a megabyte of space if you went with four digits. When hard drives were 10 MB, that was a definite "think this over" because not only were you using a lot of expensive space, but the increased file size would definitely mean longer access times. Hard drives were painfully slow, so you'd want to bring things into ram whenever possible, but 16 MB of ram was a lot! Those days are long gone. An extra megabyte of space is meaningless; an extra gigabyte is nearly meaningless. Speed has improved on all fronts; not as much on disk drives as in ram and cpu speeds, but even disk drives have improved quite a bit. In fact, for any interactive use, it is extremely unlikely that your users would ever be able to observe any speed differences from using flat files - and that's probably true no matter how clumsily you program it!

The aim of this page is to provide sources toward a provisional typology of online publishing. It is intended to provoke thinking about how we might resolve the activity into a set of useful categories. No attempt is therefore made to be complete or to judge items for quality other than their usefulness in illustrating potential categories of publication. Contributions that add to sparsely populated kinds or, especially, those that demand new categorisation altogether are most welcome. Suggestions should be sent to Willard McCarty, Willard.McCarty@kcl.ac.uk This edition of the Overview entirely supersedes the previous version.

    Description of Working Group:
Security incidents are becoming more common and more serious, and
intrusion detection systems are becoming of increasing commercial
importance. Numerous intrusion detection systems are important in the
market and different sites will select different vendors. Since
incidents are often distributed over multiple sites, it is likely that
different aspects of a single incident will be visible to different
systems. Thus it would be advantageous for diverse intrusion
detection systems to be able to share data on attacks in progress. The purpose of the Intrusion Detection Working Group is to define data formats and exchange procedures for sharing information of interest to intrusion detection and response systems, and to management systems which may need to interact with them. The first 5 lines of the file are always present and contain information on the internal layout. To simplify use by other packages, the number of Q values and the number of lines to be skipped before the simple table of Q, S(Q) errS(Q) values are found are written in the first line. To allow programs, e.g. SPOLLY to annotate the components used in the treated spectra additional text lines may be included . Similarly there is provision for users to develop their own programs, and store additional real parameters in a supplementary region of the file. The overall layout of the file is in sections as follows: 1/ - Title line 2/ - Key line (identifying the originating instrument) 3/ - Indexing for remainder of file 4/ - identification of program, date of recording 5/ - additional text lines (usually creation history) 6/ - parameters 7/ - user's additional parameters (maximum 20) 8/ - PDH parameters 9/ - lines of Q, S(Q) and errS(Q)
