Types of Data Formats
ICPSR distributes data in the following formats:
ASCII
Most ICPSR data files are distributed as ASCII files. An ASCII data file consists of rows and columns of alphanumeric characters. Since ASCII data files are simply text files, they can be opened in any word processing program or Internet browser. However, the alphanumeric characters are not meaningful without the help of a codebook or data definition statements, which will link the columns of an ASCII data file to a particular variable. In order to analyze the data, the ASCII file should be read into a statistical, database, or spreadsheet software package. ASCII files come in one of two formats: Fixed Format: Each record of the file is the same length and the precise location of the data for each variable is in the same column on every line of data. Free Format: The length of the records of the file may vary. Variables are found in a specified sequence but not in the same column locations for each record. Variables are separated from one another by a delimiter (i.e., a special character such as a comma or tab).

    Welcome to ASDFnet
Welcome to the Association Of Synchronous Data Formats (ASDF) WEB server. We are a non-profit international organization dedicated to advancing the usage of high-end synchronous data transmission technology for both the internet and intranet solutions. Organization
The ASDF organizational hierarchy is divided into five executive committees that form the core of standardization effort. Each of these committees has a chairman and 20 members, elected for a three-year term.
    Mission
ASDF is formed to provide its members with the highest quality information transmission standards available, and to assist the implementation of these standards in an efficient way.
    History
ASDF was founded in 1988 by the National Science Foundation to form an industry consortium to develop and standardize new communication protocols for synchronous data transfer. Since then over 60 countries have ratified the IUPAC 4773 standard proposition which will be enforced during Q4 of 2000. webmaster@asdf.org

Recording and Data Formats Sony Corporation's September 1995 announcement of two digital video (DV) camcorders sparked a flurry of articles in consumer-oriented video magazines. The first "affordable" digital camcorders with digital inputs and outputs had arrived about six months earlier than projected by most industry pundits. Sony's 3-CCD DCR-VX1000 (U.S. MSRP US$4,199) and, to a lesser extent, the single-CCD Sony DCR-VX700 (MSRP US$2,999, now discontinued) captured the imagination of both professional and amateur videographers. Direct digital output to non-linear editing (NLE) systems and lossless multigenerational editing using conventional linear methods seemed about to become a reality. Although Matsushita beat Sony to the punch by a couple of weeks with a DV camcorder announcement, most reviewers considered the Panasonic model's lack of an IEEE-1394 (FireWire®) connector to be a critical omission. The Sony and Panasonic camcorders claimed 500 TV lines of horizontal resolution achieved by a luminance sampling rate of 13.5 MHz and chrominance sampling rate of 6.75 MHz (4:1:1 YCrCb format for NTSC), which is a substantial improvement over the bandwidth of Hi8 and S-VHS formats that offer about 400-line resolution. DHR-1000 DVCR (MSRP US$4,199) gained widespread U.S. availability in early 1998. Later in 1998, Sony introduced the

Remote Sensing Data Format Primer Choosing the correct data type from the range of GIS data formats available in the King County Spatial Data Warehouse can, at times, appear challenging especially if you are an infrequent user. The different kinds, or formats, of data has increased due to a greater range of software that can access GIS data, changes in the industry data storage standards and the rapid expansion in the business needs that are now supported by GIS data. A data set may be stored in more than one format to ensure that the data can meet a range of business needs and software access requirements of users. Within King County, the Spatial Data Warehouse (KCSDW) is organized to a degree around the data format logic. However, the goal of the KCSDW is to provide data as transparently to users as possible to help them efficiently use GIS data in their day-to-day business processes. Therefore users should first determine the type (format) of data they need for their work, then secondly determine the correct storage library to access.

    XML data formats
The National Archives' approach to the preservation of digital records involves converting records in proprietary data formats to equivalent data formats in XML. XML (e X tensible M arkup L Basically, XML provides a standard syntax for identifying parts of a document known as elements, and then a standard way (known as a schema) for describing the rules for how those elements can be linked together in a document. By using XML, we have a widely accepted and fully documented way of structuring documents that is supported by many different open software applications. The reasoning behind the National Archives' focus on data formats in our approach to digital preservation is mapped in a model we call the essential performance model. This model describes why we think it is possible to migrate from one data format to another without losing archival meaning. It also outlines some of the advantages of very infrequent migration over emulation or frequent, short-term migration. A full description of the model and how it relates to our digital preservation work is contained in our publication An Approach to the Preservation of Digital Records
    Requests for comment (RFC)
The Archives has developed a number of data formats for converting the digital records it receives from Commonwealth agencies. We welcome comments on their completeness and suitability. Each of the links below takes you to a page that describes a format and gives you the opportunity to email comments to the Archives. The comment period will generally be about one month, but late comments will be accepted.

This new XML-based format will be used when NLM offers its leased data via ftp. The new format will be a greatly expanded and somewhat modified version of the SGML-based format currently used by publishers who submit citation and abstract data electronically to NLM for entry to see PubMed . We plan to offer the XML format via ftp in parallel with continued distribution of the data in ELHILL Unit Record Format (EURF) on tape until all licensees have had sufficient time to transition over to the new format." It is intended to clarify the meaning of some of the data in the CLDR for localizers and other people reading the CLDR comparison charts. The formats are described in the LDML specification ; in addition, there is a link at the top of the page to the ICU locale explorer , where the results of different formats can be viewed. Note that some fields are expected to be in English, since they indicate internal IDs and not translated text, such as the layout orientation, which has the value "top-to-bottom".
