2. Data Formats
use only textbased formats for your data No Proprietary Binary data formats. I shall NEVER keep my information in a proprietary binary format (such as quality of their software, not the obscurity of their data formats.
http://www.podval.org/~sds/data.html
No Proprietary Binary Data Formats
I shall NEVER keep my information in a proprietary binary format (such as Word, WordPerfect, Excel etc). All my personal files are kept in plain text format. So please do not ask for my resume in the Word format - such requests will be silently ignored. On the other hand, if others (such as a client or an employer) want, I am willing to access their data in the format they want, if they provide me with the appropriate tools.
Why Not?
People create their files for future retrieval and reuse. E.g., today you might write a paper which you will print tomorrow, send via e-mail to a friend the next day and incorporate his remarks the next week, then you might want to retrieve your original text without his changes. If your data is saved in a proprietary binary format, these simple tasks are complicated beyond your wildest imagination.
Printing:
your proprietary tool has to include a driver for each printer you might want to use. What if the tool is withdrawn from the market? What about that latest and greatest printer you wanted to buy? PostScript, understood by all modern printers, is here to save your butt.
E-mail:
you will have to send the paper as an attachment, so your friend has to have a mailer which understand attachments (most mailers do). Now, if he wants to search all his e-mail for some phrase, he will have to start an application for each attachment - a hefty price to pay for a small search! He would also have to own a tool which understands your particular idiosyncratic proprietary binary format. What if his software version is different from yours? Do you realize that the binary file you send him contains much more than what your application shows you on the screen? [

W3C NOTE 29-October-1997
This document: http://www.w3.org/TR/NOTE-rdfarch Author: Tim Berners-Lee timbl@w3.org and the W3C team.
Status of This Document
This document is a response to a frequently asked question about the relationship between the various specifications for data formats. It is a simple explanation rather than a technical document. It will not be updated with time, carries no endorsement as an official specification itself. Please see the linked parts of the W3C web for details and the current status of developments at any time.
Abstract
XML is becoming increasingly adopted as a common syntax for expressing structure in data. Now the resource Description Framework (RDF), a layer on top of XML, provides a common basis for expressing semantics. Applications which allow programs to combine data logically will be built using RDF (and therefor XML) and this will enhance the modularity and extensibility of the Web. This is essential to its rapid future growth, multiplying together the strengths of new, independently developed, applications.
Data Format Architecture
This note gives an overview of some of the W3C data format specifications, and the relationships between them.

File formats are important in part because not every GIS software package supports all formats. If you want to use a data set, but it isn’t available in a format that your GIS supports, you will have to find a way to transform it, find another data set, or find another GIS.

Mostly Data Formats and Storage
These are software packages for the storage and retrieval of data in standard formats. The software usually takes the form of a library of subroutines which are used either by another package, e.g. Matlab Ferret , etc., or in a separate (usually Fortran or C) program created by the user to retrieve or store some type of data. I've listed the most common ones used in the geosciences (at least as far as I know) below along with a final link to even more such packages. It may seem a bit strange to have so many choices for a "standard" data format, but as you'll find out when delving into them a bit more deeply, there's the beginnings of some sort of consolidation (at least amongst the netCDF, HDF, and CDF packages listed) so eventually we might have one (or at least very few) standard formats with which to work. Last updated and checked on Mar. 23, 2004, just a few short years since the last update on Mar. 15, 1996.

The Climate Data Management System is an object-oriented data management system, specialized for organizing multidimensional, gridded data used in climate analysis and simulation. Data can be obtained from files in any of the self-describing formats netCDF, HDF, GrADS/GRIB or PCMDI DRS. The Climate Data Markup Language (CDML) is the markup language used to represent data in CDMS. It is based on the XML standard. CDML is an XML dialect geared toward the representation of gridded climate datasets.
