This is the first article in a six-part series about programming computers to play chess, and by extension other similar strategy games of perfect information. Chess has been described as the Drosophila Melanogaster of artificial intelligence, in the sense that the game has spawned a great deal of successful research (including a match victory against the current world champion and arguably the best player of all time, Gary Kasparov), much like many of the discoveries in genetics over the years have been made by scientists studying the tiny fruit fly. This article series will describe some of the state-of-the-art techniques employed by the most successful programs in the world, including Deep Blue. Note that by the time the series is completed (in October), I will have written a simple implementation of the game in Java, and the source code will be freely available for download on my web site. So if you want to see more code samples, be patient; I'll give you plenty in due time!

http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Sector/3814/delphi_t.htm
The Program
In this first project we are going to build a simple 4 function calculator using Delphi2. Below is a view of the completed project. The first thig to do is create a new project and then save it. I saved the project as PJcalc and the unit as Ucalc. Next place the 19 Button components on the form and an Edit box then change the caption of each of the buttons in the Caption property of the Properties Dialog box also change the Font property to character size 10 and highlight Bold for the font style. Next in the Name property rename the number buttons to reflect the number they contain for example the button containing 9 would be called Num9 the button contining 8 would be Num8 and so on. Next change the Name property of the decimal point button to Decimal, the C button to Cancel, the C E button to CancelEntry, the % button to Percent, the Editbox to ReadOut, and each of the operator buttons ie (+ - x / =) to Operator1, Operator2 etc.. Change the Caption Property of Form1 to Calculator and we are now ready to start entering the source code. var op1, op2: Real;

Introduction BASIC HTML Tips and Tricks
Introduction
This site is intended to assist "newbies" in programming computers. In this site I deal with the most common commands/tags in BASIC and HTML. These are the easiest languages to learn. I do not have a complete list of commands/tags on this site but if you want a complete list, you can e-mail me . If you can learn these two languages, you can learn almost any language. So have fun.
BASIC
Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code, or BASIC, is the easiest programming language to learn, use and write. It uses simple commands such as PRINT and INPUT. Below is a list of the most common commands and their functions: PRINT: This command tells the computer to display text on the screen. For example, PRINT "BASIC is fun." would display BASIC is fun on the screen. INPUT: This command has two different syntax. The first one, INPUT A, tells the computer to wait for a text input from the computer before continuing. The second one, INPUT A$, would tell the computer to wait for a numerical input from the user before continuing. In either case, the letter "A" can be replaced with any letter or word. GOTO: This command tells the computer to go to a specific line. For example, GOTO 500 would tell the computer to go to line 500.

Multiparadigm Parallel Programming Environments
For this thesis we shall consider that a programming paradigm is a model or an approach employed in solving a programming problem with a restricted set of concepts. Programming paradigms either induce or are induced by a class of languages, the programming environments in which these languages are supported, or the software engineering discipline one uses to produce systems within these environments. Typically, each class places different requirements on its associated programming environment [

A Brief History of Programming Languages
September 1995 20th Anniversary / A Brief History of Programming Languages
We've come a long way from computers programmed with wires and punch cards. Maybe not as far as some would like, though. Here are the innovations in programming.
ca. 1946 Konrad Zuse , a German engineer working alone while hiding out in the Bavarian Alps, develops Plankalkul. He applies the language to, among other things, chess. Short Code , the first computer language actually used on an electronic computing device, appears. It is, however, a "hand-compiled" language. Grace Hopper , working for Remington Rand, begins design work on the first widely known compiler, named A-0. When the language is released by Rand in 1957, it is called MATH-MATIC. Alick E. Glennie

177. The SR Programming Language
Synchronizing Resources is a language for writing concurrent programs. Source code, mailing list archive, and documentation.
http://www.cs.arizona.edu/sr/www/index.html
The SR Programming Language
SR (Synchronizing Resources) is a language for writing concurrent programs. The main language constructs are resources and operations. Resources encapsulate processes and variables they share; operations provide the primary mechanism for process interaction. SR provides a novel integration of the mechanisms for invoking and servicing operations. Consequently, all of local and remote procedure call, rendezvous, message passing, dynamic process creation, multicast, and semaphores are supported. SR also supports shared global variables and operations. SR has been used at a number of universities and labs for course work and research projects involving concurrent programming. It has been used in concurrent programming courses to reinforce concepts with small programming projects and with larger projects such as experiments with parallel algorithms, replicated databases, distributed simulations, and parts of distributed operating systems such as file systems and command interpreters. SR has also been used as a tool in several masters theses and doctoral dissertations to conduct experiments in parallel and distributed programming and to implement larger systems such as a system for mixed language programming, one for distributed implementation of graph algorithms, experiments with load balancing algorithms, and experiments with upcall program structures. SR is the predecessor to the MPD programming language, which provides the same capabilities using the syntax described in

Links to get started with WinSock programming. (Ed Snible)
http://www.snible.org/winsock/
Windows Sockets Programming
This page is designed to give the programmer enough information to know where to look to get the actual information.
What is Windows Sockets?
Windows Sockets, or Winsock , is a .DLL which allows applications to talk over a network, usually the Internet. The .DLL is usually called WINSOCK.DLL.
Where do I get Windows Sockets?
Unlike all other .DLLs, there isn't an official WINSOCK.DLL in the sense that there is say a 'common dialog' COMMDLG.DLL or a 'control 3d' CTL3DV2.DLL. When you get WINSOCK, you get it from a particular vendor. Each different version is slightly different in terms of how it is configured, but once it is configured properly each .DLL should have the same functions and properly written applications will work with whatever Winsock you are using.
Popular Winsocks are:
Trumpet Winsock
This Winsock is shareware. It has the ability to talk over an Ethernet board or over a modem to an Internet provider, but it can't do both simultaneously. Note that if you don't have a network card or an Internet provider account you can still write and test programs running both the client and server on your machine, provided you have a serial port. You can FTP the old unlimited Trumpet from ftp://ftp.demon.co.uk/.d3/ibmpc/win3/winsock/stacks/trumpwsk/twsk20b.zip

Systems Programming Aptitude Test
Author: Jack M. Wolfe, Ph.D. Date introduced: 1973 Administration time: 3 hours Available from Walden in the US and Canada only. For other countries, call for additional information at 800-361-4908.
Purpose
To evaluate the aptitudes and potentials of systems programming candidates of all experience levels, for work in all types of systems programming tasks.
General Description
The SPAT is a generalized aptitude test designed to measure the essential traits of a systems programming position. A systems programmer or software programmer is usually involved in highly intricate programming problems relating to the programs that run the computer hardware, operating systems, peripherals and internal memory functions. The SPAT test consists of five work exercises which require candidates to demonstrate superior logic, follow highly intricate instructions, and document clearly and concisely. High ability to generalize from a specific data set, and the understanding of intricate sets of operations requiring simultaneous steps are also demanded by the problems. The problems are presented in increasing order of difficulty.
Positions for which the test is appropriate
The SPAT test can be used to screen both inexperienced and experienced applicants. This test also measures the ability to work in systems programming, identifying promotability and skill levels.
