    C Programming Language
This page is dedicated to the ANSI C Programming language. It focuses on the 1989/1990 ANSI/ISO standard (C90), not the newer version. We've assembled links and copies of interesting or educational articles on C programming, look at Windows Win32 programming, and consider why we still prefer ANSI C to C++.
    Contents
Why we prefer C to C++
    • C is simpler and more compact
    • The reference book is thinner
    • It's usually easier to work out what the program's doing
    • It generates smaller executables (much smaller in the case of MFC)
    • It's more portable
    • With good structure and coding practices, it's often just as "safe" as OOP

For a long time, the Lysator Programming in C site has been the web's primary site for resources devoted to the C programming language. The Lysator server is fast and reliable; there is no point in duplicating that site and I have made no effort to do so. Instead, I have created this page as a delivery system for information and tools that might be useful to students in a first C programming class - specifically, for students in the C programming class taught at Washington University in St. Louis. The content of this page is more eclectic than its title would suggest. I am a mathematician by trade, not a computer scientist. One computer page should be enough for any mathematician. If I have found a computer-related website educational or entertaining, then I have included a link to it from this page, whether or not it focuses on C. Most of my programming is actually in MAPLE, a symbolic algebra interactive and programming environment. I have a separate page devoted to MAPLE. Click on the Maple leaf to reach it

C allows for maximum control and efficiency, and is the language of choice for application and system programming in a variety of software development environments. This certificate program is designed for students who have some working knowledge of a high-level language and have written at least one computer program. Building upon their programming background, students increase their knowledge of a language used to write most of the world's computer software. The C Programming Certificate Program provides the skills necessary to be a productive member of a development team as an entry-level C programmer. Next Information Meeting:

    Introduction
Every year since 1977, the ACM has organized the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest . This contest, which consists of a regional qualifying contest and the Finals, provides college students with the opportunity to demonstrate and sharpen their programming skills. During this contest, teams consisting of three students and one computer are to solve as many of the given problems as possible within 5 hours. The team with the most problems solved wins, where ``solved'' means producing the right outputs for a set of (secret) test inputs. Though the individual skills of the team members are important, in order to be a top team it is necessary to make use of synergy within the team. As participants in the 1995 Contest Finals (two of us also participated in the 1994 Finals), we have given a lot of thought to strategy and teamwork. In this article we summarize our observations from various contests, and we hope that if you ever participate in this contest (or any other) that this information will be valuable to you.

Introduction: This is a list of a few C and C++ language tutorials available to a user. This list will include interactive tutorials, public-domain code collections, books etc. I've developed this FAQ purely as a volunteer effort as a service to the Internet community. Although every effort has been made to insure that all the information here is as accurate as possible, no guarantee is implied or intended. I welcome comments, suggestions or criticism for all the people out there on the net that read this. If you can help me make this list a little better, you will be helping a lot of people out there on the net. I am a horrible writer and an even worse speller. If you find any errors or would like to suggest any additions please feel free to Some of the items discussed here are platform-dependent, but most of the items are applicable across all platforms (portable). If you have any comments, suggestions, complaints, additions, etc, please feel free to If you are working on a tutorial or would like something added to this list, please e-mail me at the address given above. I must note that I haven't been looking for or adding new resources since about 1996. I discovered Java and have since been putting all my energies into learning and teaching Java. But I've tried to make sure that all the links are current and so if you notice something wrong, just let me know.

FOLLOW UP So I decided to spent my last $45 on a fan today. I literally have $2 to my name. I ended up getting a Volcano 12 because the guy at the shop talked about it like it was made of gold. He said he was running around 90 degrees as well... he popped it into his machine and the temp dropped to 45 degrees. So I rushed home, put the fan in and turned on the power. First time I got a black screen. Second time I saw the boot screen, and it started with loading windows. It froze on loading windows about 15 more times before I decided to drop the speed from 133 to 100. Still no go. I tried a few times throughout the night... and now at 12:01pm the machine is in windows my screen is buggered up, the system pauses now and then, but it's working. I'm guessing the cool temp in the house is the winning combination. Really don't want to turn it off, but I don't think running it is a good idea. Even with the Volcano fan, it's still running in the high 80's... which leads me to believe the CPU has already started to cook itself. No black marks on the chip, but it's still screwed up.

I'm adding a new section where I will be presenting pages for classic video games. I'm starting off by allowing 5 people to host video game pages on my server, this includes MANY benefits. I hope eventually to have 20+ game sites on my page hosting graphics movies etc.. on Final Fantasy 1-9, Zelda 1-6, and all the other truly classic games that are out there. Just to let you know, I don't believe in having 1 zelda page for all six zelda's, people spread themselves to thin when they do that, one page per one game. For more information please visit Here

Introduction to Thoughtful Programming and the Forth Philosophy
    Michael Misamore

This document may be freely distributed so long as it is reproduced in its entirety without modificatons.
To the reader: constructive criticism and commentary is welcome! Introduction to Thoughtful Programming This is also the view of businesses in the increasingly information-driven economy of the United States. They believe that software should be developed and shipped as quickly as possible to make it to the market on time. If this involves cutting corners in terms of runtime speed, code complexity, size, system requirements, or bug testing, it is considered a sacrifice which can be remedied after the product ships. After all, the business has a bottom line, and if the code works, marketing is perfectly willing to sell it to people. Now, it is doubtful that many programmers, perhaps after some hard thought, would consider this kind of software beautiful. It is certainly suboptimal in many aspects already mentioned, there are certainly sections of code which could be rewritten or done away with, perhaps it was written in a scripting language when it should have been written in a lower level language, etc. And let's not forget the hundreds or thousands of bugs that still lie in the code because the deadline was hit. This is not the kind of code that a programmer would be proud to admit to writing. For years now, the computer industry, largely in marketing efforts, has given the average consumer the impression that computing technology is abundant and ubiquitous
