As an adolescent I aspired to lasting fame, I craved factual certainty, and I thirsted for a meaningful vision of human life - so I became a scientist. This is like becoming an archbishop so you can meet girls.
Matt Cartmill Formal symbolic representation of qualitative entities is doomed to its rightful place of minor significance in a world where flowers and beautiful women abound.
Albert Einstein The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not "Eureka!" (I found it!) but "That's funny ..." Isaac Asimov I am yet to see any problem, however complicated, which, when you looked at it in the right way, did not become still more complicated.

Life Simulation Game
Home Rules Create a Lifeform Run a Simulation
Create your own lifeform which will live, move, feed, reproduce and die in a world of other life forms.
You can play the game directly from this website: click here to play online. See the rules if you have not played before. You also need to enable cookies on your browser, as these are used to store your lifeforms. Please email me with any bugs you find in the software.
You may also try out one or more of the life forms that have already been written, and see how your life form performs.
When you've written a life form, email it to me for inclusion on this website.
Also, please email me about any interesting results you get with the available life forms, suggestions for improvements or general comments.
Note, if the site is down (which it sometimes is due to the game using up too much bandwidth), then you can just save the three pages jworld.htm, jworldsetup.htm and jlifeformedit.htm to your hard disk and run them offline.

Introduction
CoreLife implements an artificial-life environment based on - and compatible with - Tierra, Tom Ray's well-known project, which displays open-ended evolution using a world of assembly-language creatures running on simulated parallel processors.
I decided to offer CoreLife as freeware to the online community since there are still many people interested in doing experiments with Tierra-like systems. CoreLife is easy to use, with a full-featured context-sensitive help system. It runs on any old ms-dos PC as well as on Pentiums with Windows95.
There's a built-in color VGA interface enabling you to use a mouse pointer to manipulate live cells during the simulation, like a syringe to inject more creatures and an axe to kill them, or spray mutations (random code) directly into the cells so you can watch the population recover and diversify, all within a fraction of a second.
Typically, from a single cell, a complex community emerges in which evolutionary arms races can be observed. This is the origin of the excitement about Tierra, and the reason I created CoreLife. Enjoy !

WHAT ARE COMPLEX ADAPTIVE SYSTEMS?
Many natural systems (e.g., brains, immune systems, ecologies, societies) and increasingly, many artificial systems (parallel and distributed computing systems, artificial intelligence systems, artificial neural networks, evolutionary programs) are characterized by apparently complex behaviors that emerge as a result of often nonlinear spatio-temporal interactions among a large number of component systems at different levels of organization. Consequently, researchers in a number of disparate areas including computer science, artificial intelligence, neural networks, cognitive science, computational economics, mathematics, optimization, complexity theory, control systems, biology, neuroscience, psychology, engineering, etc. have have begun to address, through a combination of basic as well as applied, theoretical as well as experimental research, analysis and synthesis of such systems.
