A MAML-to-Swarm (named xmc) compiler is also being developed which compiles the source code into a swarm application. Like every other Swarm application, this generated application must be compiled by gcc. Developed at Systems Laboratory Central European University , Hungary

Introduction
Artificial life (Alife) is a field of study devoted to understanding life by attempting to derive general theories underlying biological phenomena, and recreating these dynamics in other physical media - such as computers - making them accessible to new kinds of experimental manipulation and testing. This scientific research links biology and computer science. Artificial life is an alternative life-forms - literally "life made by Man rather than by Nature." Artificial cells are used rather than living cells. While biological research is essentially analytic, attempting to break down complex phenomena into their basic components, Alife is synthetic, trying to construct phenomena from their elemental units - put together systems that behave like living organisms. In addition to providing new ways for studying biological phenomena associated with life on Earth, life-as-we-know-it, Alife lets us extend our studies to the larger domain of "biologically" possible life, life-as-it-could-be [Langton 1992]
The Importance of Evolution
Evolution is central to Alife research. It offers the possibility of adaptation to a dynamic environment - when an unforeseen event occurs, the system can evolve, in analogy to nature. Genetic programming has been successfully applied by Koza to tackle several problems

106. Physis - Platform For Digital Evolution
Physis is a software platform for testing the evolvability of different assembly like programming languages.
http://physis.sourceforge.net
Physis - software tool for studying the evolution of self-replcating machine-code computer programs.
Physis - a versatile term in ancient greek philosophy. Its meanings are:
nature, origin, spring, birth, growth, increase, constitution, character, peculiarity, essence, substance, exterior, outward form, appearance, nature of soul/spirit, character, personality, natural inclinations, (animal) instinct, regular order of nature, creator nature, primary element, creation, creature, species, sex
shortly we can say it is the vast creative power of nature, more specifically nowadays we call it simply evolution. The ultimate goal of this project is to let this power free in digital computers, and waiting for the e-cambrian explosion. Hence the name, physis.
According to our approach living organisms and computer programs are beautiful structures and are pretty much the same thing. For a more down-to-earth summary of this work please press the 'Research' button. ;)

110. Breve 1.9 : Home
MacOSX software for simulation of artificial life and decentralized systems.
http://www.spiderland.org/breve
: version 1.9.1 now available for Mac OS X, Linux and Windows
A list of changes in the new version is available here
breve is a free software package which makes it easy to build 3D simulations of decentralized systems and artificial life. Users define the behaviors of agents in a 3D world and observe how they interact. breve includes physical simulation and collision detection so you can simulate realistic creatures, and an OpenGL display engine so you can visualize your simulated worlds. Write Your Own Simulations
breve simulations are written in an easy to use language called steve . The language is object-oriented and borrows many features from languages such as C, Perl and Objective C, but even users without previous programming experience will find it easy to jump in. More information on the steve language can be found in the documentation section Interface With Your Own Code
breve features an extensible plugin architecture which allows you to write your own plugins and interact with your own code. Writing plugins is simple and allows you to expand breve to work with existing projects. Plugins have been written in breve to generate MIDI music, download web pages, interact with a Lisp environment and interact with the "push" language. To develop your own plugins, you'll need to download the plugin SDK from the download section Technical Overview Learn more about breve.

114. Artificial Life And Genetic Algorithms
artificial life (ALife). artificial life is the study of artificial systems that exhibit behaviour characteristic of natural living
http://www.brunel.ac.uk/depts/AI/alife/
Artificial Life (A-Life) Artificial life is the study of artificial systems that exhibit behaviour characteristic of natural living systems; self-organisation, adaptation, evolution, co-evolution, metabolism.... It is the quest to explain life in any of its possible manifestations, without restriction to the particular examples that have evolved on earth. This includes biological and chemical experiments, computer simulations, and purely theoretical endeavours. Processes occurring on molecular, social and evolutionary scales are subject to investigation. The ultimate goal is to extract the logical form of living systems. More about Artificial Life Emergence Links to A-life sites Genetic Algorithms The genetic algorithm approach is the result of the search for robustness; natural systems are robust - efficient and efficacious - as they adapt to a wide variety of environments. By abstracting nature's adaptation algorithm of choice in artificial form, we hope to achieve similar breadth of performance. Genetic algorithms operate on populations of strings, with the string coded to represent some underlying parameter set. Reproduction, crossover and mutation are applied to successive string populations to create new string populations. These operators are very simple, involving nothing more complex than random number generation, string copying, and partial string exchanging; yet the resulting search performance is wide-ranging and impressive. Genetic algorithms realise an innovative notion exchange among strings and thus connect to our own ideas of human search or discovery.

HAL - Hardware Artificial Life
Unfortunately, your browser does not support Java.
A Java applet is the central focus of this page.
You're encouraged to try again using a Java-aware browser.
A version of this applet using Sun's Java plug-in is available here
Introduction
This applet displays a cellular automata substrate capable of supporting evolving, self-reproducing organisms which are capable of universal computation. The applet is fully interactive, allowing you to apply selection based on organisms visual characteristics using a variety of implements. Selection may also applied automatically. Currently the built in selection methods are for size and shape only. The cellular automata uses a strict von-Neumann neighbourhood and is based on an innovative, multi-layered design. The whole architecture is designed to be implemented on massively parallel hardware.
Central to HAL's design is the use of fine-grained massive parallelism which, on appropriate hardware, should allow maximum possible performance to be reached. Note: if you're playing with wiping out organisms manually you'll probably want to have the 'No selection at all' checkbox ticked - this causes all cells to be born pregnant and removes some constraints which abort malformed offspring.
