  • (longer version of a paper published in Philosophy of Science in Florence edited by M.L.Dalla Chiara, R. Giuntini, L. Laudisa, forthcoming - Acts of The tenth International Congress of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science, Florence, August 1995] . In the discussion on semantic holism it has been claimed that A.I. is almost entirely holistic. In this paper I show that some of the main lines of research in symbolic artificial intelligence are not holistic; I will consider three classical cases: toy words, frames and contextual reasoning. I claim that these examples from A.I. can be interpreted as implementing molecularist intuitions about language. Eventually I suggest that some assumptions behind the discussion on holism should be re-interpreted, expecially the usual references to Frege and Wittgenstein.[1] 0. http://ecai2002.univ-lyon1.fr - last modified : 2002/07/29 - webmaster The University Claude Bernard of Lyon 1 (UCBL) and the National Institute of Applied Sciences (INSA) are very pleased to invite you to celebrate ECAI 2002, the 15th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, in Lyon. Like previous ECAIs, this event will bring together researchers and developers from universities and industry to present the state of the art in Artificial Intelligence. It will be an opportunity to have "knowledge at the heart of the development of society". Along with paper presentations and prestigious invited speakers, the conference will offer workshops and tutorials on the most advanced topics. In parallel with ECAI, the Conference on Prestigious Applications of Intelligent Systems (PAIS) will give an overview of the most significant real-world applications of artificial intelligence. For the first time, ECAI will also host the First STarting AI Researchers Symposium (STAIRS). This symposium aims to bring together doctoral students and young post-doctoral researchers in AI, giving them a real opportunity for cross-fertilization between the current leaders in the field and the next generation.

Following Kubrick's unfortunate passing, Spielberg, who had prior been collaborating ideas with him concerning "A.I.," decided to make it his next directorial effort, both as a movie that he was passionate and excited about, and as a loving tribute to one of the great masters of the cinema. The end result of the long, arduous, 25-year journey of "A.I." is a science-fiction film filled with endless imagination and wonder; a mature, almost devastating fairy tale; and a thought-provoking rumination on the importance of love, and determined hope, in one's life. The movie is, indeed, a Spielberg production, although it does feature an icy, somehow bleak, emotional core that is certainly Kubrickian in spirit, and undoubtedly intentional. Using the approach of differing styles of moviemaking (with Spielberg more of a wide-eyed optimist) turns out to work extraordinarily well in this film's case, as the picture is deeply touching and effective without being maudlin, and occasionally sterile without coming off as cold-hearted.

    Programme.
    Workshop Background
The application of multiple-valued logic (MVL) to (i) reasoning, and to (ii) learning, represents a slowly-burgeoning area of research work. This workshop aims at significantly strengthening these applications of MVL. We are aiming at enhancing the role of MVL in data mining and in artificial intelligence. A range of speakers will deal with theoretical aspects of MVL, and applications to reasoning (in artificial intelligence) and to learning (in data mining). Clustering and classification are at the core of many of these methods and applications. The opening morning session will consist of tutorials, aimed at PhD research students and young researchers.

by Mark Humphrys. I'm a strong believer in actually building things rather than just talking. But like everyone else in the field, I've got some informal thoughts on what it's all about. Here's my current set of conclusions. I have written a popular science talk on this.
