Introduction
Jan Dismas Zelenka's music exhibits contrapuntal mastery and harmonic inventiveness, qualities that were particularly admired by his contemporaries J.S.Bach and G.P.Telemann. His music which was not widely disseminated during his lifetime due to the protected status that compositions by the Dresden composers held, has in recent years seen a revival of interest, mainly centred upon his vocal compositions, which is surely warranted on the basis of the originality of his language, "the private rhetoric of the heart" which Dr Wolfgang Horn refers to.
Biography
Jan Dismas Zelenka was born in Lounovice, a small town in central Bohemia, (now Czechoslovakia) south east of Prague, and was baptised on the 16 th Following his early education with his father it is assumed that he studied in Prague at the Clementinum. Zelenka maintained a long association with the Clementinum which possessed a Jesuit college and university and was a renowned centre for music. In 1704 Zelenka wrote the school drama in honour of Count Cernin Via laureata magnis virtutum (now lost). At the Clementinum, church music, school dramas with accompanying music, and Easter oratorios called sepolcra ( after the symbolic grave at which they were played ) were performed. Sepulchrum oratorios were particularly popular in the Bohemian lands and Zelenka's

For most of his career, the Czech baroque composer J.D. Zelenka acted as a substitute for the court conductors J. Heinichen and later J.A. Hasse in one of the most significant musical centres of the first half of the eighteenth century - Dresden. Here Zelenka was confronted with the great blossoming of Italian music. Its influence, enriched by remarkable melodic and harmonic overtures, is reflected in his Baroque style, which considerably expanded the tonal concepts of the time. Because of his open-minded architecture and bound polyphony he is often said to resemble J.S. Bach. Most of his works originated in Dresden. Among them, for example, are Missa sanctissimae trinitatis, Zalmy, Lamentace etc. His instrumental works are also extensive (sonatas for various instruments, cavalry preludes, concert symphonies, etc.). http://www.hoasm.org/XIF/Zelenka.html
Bohemian composer. He may have attended the Jesuit college Clementinum in Prague before serving Count Hartig in that city (1709-10). From 1710 he played double bass in the royal orchestra at Dresden. On his way to Italy in 1715, he studied with J. J. Fux in Vienna and A. Lotti in Venice. After a few years in Venice (1717-19) he returned to Dresden, where he stayed for the rest of his life; in 1735 he became Kirchen-compositeur. His compositions include Masses, oratorios, cantatas, motets, other sacred vocal works, six trio sonatas, and various orchestral works. Zelenka is a greatly under-appreciated composer.

10. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Jan Dismas Zelenka
Jan Dismas Zelenka, baroque composer born Lounovice 1679, died Dresden 1745. In English, it reads To the memory of Jan Dismas Zelenka 16791745.

Jan Dismas Zelenka, baroque composer:
born Lounovice 1679, died Dresden 1745.
Q.
Why did Zelenka's music disappear into obscurity for 200 years? A. This is discussed at length in Janice Stockigt's book . After Zelenka's death, much of his music was "kept under lock and key" by the Dresden court, and the reasons for this are not clear. Telemann is known to have written of ZWV 55 ( Responsoria ) being guarded jealously "as something very rare" (a more complete translation is given below). Copies of certain works (which had presumably been given away while Zelenka was alive) were made after his death and ended up in different parts of Germany and Czechoslovakia. There were even a few performances in the 1800s. Perhaps one of the strongest reasons for the obscurity of Zelenka's music was that Catholic liturgical music had no place in a Lutheran society.
Q. How many composers of his time did Zelenka actually meet? A. Perhaps it is more relevant to ask which composers he didn't meet! Between 1716 and 1719, he studied under Fux in Vienna and had Quantz as his student. Zelenka would also have met Antonio

Zelenka, Jan Dismas (1679 - 1745)
The Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka played the double bass in the royal orchestra in Dresden, whence he was despatched for study in Italy, eventually returning to spend the rest of his life in the Saxon capital. It was expected that he would succeed Heinichen as court Kapellmeister, but the position went, instead, to Hasse, and Zelenka remained, now as Church Composer, a position of much less importance. He won the admiration of distinguished contemporaries, such as Johann Sebastian Bach, for his use of counterpoint, his harmonic imagination and originality, and made some use of Bohemian folk elements. Orchestral Music Zelenka's orchestral compositions include a set of five Capriccios, among other compositions in the musical idiom of his time. Vocal and Choral Music Much of Zelenka's surviving work is in the form of sacred vocal music, settings of the Mass or of movements from the Mass, of psalms and of canticles.

Little is known of Zelenka's life before 1704. He may have been educated by the Jesuits in Prague. In 1710 he joined the band of Dresden's Hofkapelle as a player of the double-bass. In 1717 Zelenka obtained leave of absence to study with Fux in Vienna (during which time he also taught counterpoint to Quantz ). That same year Zelenka accompanied the Elector to Italy where he studied with Lotti . Zelenka's works include Masses oratorios motets Psalms , and other church music. Zelenka is mentioned in a letter (1775) from Carl Philipp Emanuel to Forkel as one whose works his father had regarded highly in his later years.

Other Information: Jan Dismas Zelenka was a bass player and composer in the Dresden Court orchestra. He was born in Bohemia in 1679 and died in Dresden in 1745. Among the distinctions that this composer has gained after his death, Forkel, in his biography of J.S. Bach, states that Bach admired Zelenka's music. The two were acquainted from visits by Bach to the Dresden Court. G.P. Telemann was another admirer of Zelenka's music. Zelenka's employer, Augustus the Strong, apparently did not share the views of these two composers. He appointed Hasse to the role of Court Kapellmeister over Zelenka. Zelenka was educated by the Jesuits at Clementium near Prague. He dedicated some religious cantatas to his alma mater. Most of Zelenka's religious works were kept in manuscript and were lost during the latter days of World War II. Zelenka was also educated in Italy by Lotti and in Germany under J.J. Fux. Apparently he was a good pupil to judge from the caliber of his works. Zelenka is famous for his secular works; his Capriccios and his Trio Sonatas for two Oboes, Bassoon, and basso continuo. These works have been recorded by many notable modern day Oboists, including Heinz Holliger. I first came into awareness of Zelenka through Holliger's interview in the early 1980s where he called Zelenka's works "Experimental Baroque". What intrigued me most was Holliger's admission that he would compose music the same way as Zelenka.

Zelenka was a court musician in Dresden for most of his career. Except for brief periods of travel during which he studied or participated in music research, he served as a double bass player in the court orchestra and later aided the ailing Kapellmeister in his duties. Upon the death of the Kapellmeister, the position was awarded to another musician, an event that led Zelenka to feel disillusioned by the lack of recognition he had received for his acheivements. 19. Jan Dismas Zelenka: A Biographical Note
jan dismas zelenka Biography covers his Dresden Court employment and compositions. BAROQUE COMPOSERS AND MUSICIANS. jan dismas zelenka.
http://www.baroquemusic.org/bqxzelenka.html
BAROQUE COMPOSERS AND MUSICIANS Jan Dismas ZELENKA Capellmeister from 1617 to 1672. In the early 1700s, composers, impresarios, famous singers, and instrumental virtuosos came from all over Europe, including the eastern countries, and Dresden's display of splendor as the "Florence on the Elbe," the predominant center of music and the arts in 17th- and 18th-century Germany, reached its zenith during the reign of Augustus the Strong (1670-1733) as Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. Born in Loudovice, Bohemia in 1679 and son of an organist, Jan Dismas Zelenka was educated at the Prague Jesuit College, with which he continued to remain in contact. In 1710, he moved to Dresden, where he became principal double-bass player of the Dresden court orchestra. Apart from specific journies to Italy, Vienna and periodic returns to Prague, Zelenka would remain in Dresden for the rest of his life. In 1697, the King-Elector Augustus the Strong of Saxony had assumed the Polish crown, a step that obliged him to adopt the Roman Catholic faith although Saxony was predominantly Lutheran. Thus the Royal Court at Dresden maintained two religious "faces", on the one hand honoring strictly Lutheran Bach with the title of Royal Court Composer , and on the other hand bestowing on Zelenka the title of Court Composer of Church Music for his numerous sacred works composed for the Dresden Catholic Church. So we find in Zelenka's surviving compositions numerous sacred works, some 30 masses, psalms, and three oratorios with biblical subjects, totaling in all some 150 works, side by side with secular instrumental compositions reflecting his role in the Court Orchestra, of which he became conductor for five seasons.

Zelenka's music
If you are at all interested in baroque music, but haven't yet explored the music of Jan Dismas Zelenka , this site is for you. Most musicologists dealing with music of this period agree that the compositions of this long-forgotten musical giant approach or equal those of his contemporaries Bach Händel Vivaldi and Telemann in their advanced use of counterpoint, their extreme demands on the players and singers, their ingenuity and resourcefulness, and their overall beauty. To those with pre-conceived ideas of how 18th century music should sound, much of Zelenka's music will seem timeless and unrestricted. Yet he was greatly inspired by the Italian masters of the 1500s and 1600s such as Palestrina and Frescobaldi . As a result of his strong individuality within the baroque tradition, Zelenka's music holds many surprises.
