Sky Curtains paints a musical portrait of the two polar Auroras (Borealis and Australis). It is an impressionist tone poem, depicting these natural phenomena with shimmering lines that shift in and out of focus, a La Mer for the atmosphere. Close your eyes and you will see it. In Borealis a trilling flute throws in wavering lines around the edges while flutes and clarinets cross lines with the cello. In Australis, the woodwinds clash in a fugato with the strings, the notes ascending the scale like a whoosh of arrant wind. As in Hidden Heritage, both movements are fascinating renditions of visual images. Yet in Sky Curtains, the images are more tangible: the auroras suddenly appear as frenetic woodwinds, show their razzle-dazzle, flutter about with no particular direction, then fade away. Doubles (an oboe sonatina) and Dance/Inner Dance (a woodwind trio) don't lend themselves so easily to visual metaphors. Their sonorities are more palpable: rhythmic, witty, sprightly, sometimes even warm, wet, and scratchy as a cat's tongue.

Resource Guide on Women and Music
by Gwendolyn Alker
with editorial assistance from Christian Herold
This resource guide is an introductory list of various organizations, events, web sites and bibliographic references, focusing on women and music. This list does not claim to be exhaustive. Instead, it provides the reader with an entryway into a rapidly expanding network. The internet has provided an invaluable place to foster the ongoing conversations between women who are interested in music; therefore, this list will be most useful for those with access to the World Wide Web. This guide does not include academic edited volumes, or other academic essays. The guide could not have been completed without the help of Sarah Whitworth, Eva Wiener of NYWC, Inc., and various members of IAWM-L discussion list (hosted by the International Alliance of Women in Music). Beth Anderson Herold <beand@interport.net> generously lent her flyer, " The Internet For Women In Music " <http://www.users.interport.net/~beand/ ifwm.html>. A few sections of this guide have been taken from her text. This guide is divided into the following sections: I.
