PARIS (Reuters) - Romanian-born French composer, architect and mathematician Yannis Xenakis, who invented a new genre of music composed with the aid of computers, died on Sunday aged 78. "France loses one of its most brilliant artists today", French President Jacques Chirac said in a statement of condolence. Xenakis, born in Romania to a wealthy family of Greek origin, moved to Greece in 1932 and subsequently fought with the Greek resistance during World War Two, losing an eye in battle. Expelled by Greece in 1947 because of his political beliefs, Xenakis moved to Paris where he closely collaborated with modernist architect Le Corbusier for the next 12 years. Parallel to this, he began studying composition at the Paris Conservatory under illustrious composers including Olivier Messiaen and Darius Milhaud. Xenakis developed a new composing technique using computers and based on the mathematical probability of the recurrence of notes and rhymes. This yielded some of his breakthrough works, Metastasis in 1955 and Achorripsis in 1958. "By breaking free from the constraints of the classical norm, by taking the path of random music and by using the inputs of science, he contributed to the definition of a new area of freedom for musical art", Chirac said.

Introduction
French composer of Greek parentage and Romanian birth. In 1932 his family returned to Greece, and he was educated on Spetsai and at the Athens Polytechnic, where he studied engineering. In 1947 he arrived in Paris, where he became a member of Le Corbusier's architectural team, producing his first musical work, Metastasis , only in 1954, based on the design for the surfaces of the Philips pavilion to be built for the Brussels Exposition of 1958. This, with its divided strings and mass effects, had an enormous influence; but in ensuing works he moved on to find mathematical and computer means of handling large numbers of events, drawing on (for example) Gaussian distribution ( ST/10 ), Markovian chains ( Analogiques ) and game theory ( Duel ). Other interests were in electronic music ( Bohor , 1962), ancient Greek drama (used in several settings) and instrumental virtuosity ( Herma for piano, 1964;

Xenakis, Iannis (1922 - )
The Romanian-born composer Iannis Xenakis, of Greek parentage, settled finally in Paris in 1947, taking out French citizenship. After earlier scientific training in Athens, he was largely self-taught as a composer, in Paris receiving encouragement from Messiaen. There is a close connection between mathematics and music in his work and with architecture. Works In addition to the theoretical writings and teaching of Xenakis, there are a varied series of compositions, from the orchestral Metastasis of 1954, Pithoprakta and Achoripsis, to the Empreintes of 1975 and the 1979 Pleïades, for percussion. Other instrumental music includes works for harpsichord, amplified or, in Khoai, unamplified.

Iannis Xenakis 29. Mai in Braila, Rumänien 4.
