Introduction The list of Wolpe's known compositions is not near complete; and some of the years of composition I do not know. I would be thankful for any additional information that anyone reading this page might be able to give me. Submissions for additional references, recordings and reviews of them will also be greatly appreciated and added to this page, with acknowledgement. NB All umlauted vowels in German are indicated in a traditional convention of simply following the vowel with an 'e'. This avoids difficulties of browser and terminal capabilities regarding fonts.

    STEFAN WOLPE
A Brief Biography Stefan Wolpe was born in Berlin, August 25, 1902, and received instruction in piano and theory as a boy of 14. The stifling atmosphere of the State Academy of Music made his stay there a short one; nonetheless, he attended and graduated from the Berlin Academy of Music, during which years he had the friendship and counsel of Ferrucio Busoni. He was a student of Ferruccio Busoni, Anton v. Webern and Hermann Scherchen (Brussels 1938). He was influenced by Hans Schrecker, Scriabin, Hindemith, Satie and Paul Whiteman, and many artists of the Bauhaus School. Raoul Pleskow once said there was a period of time when the avant garde consisted of Wolpe and Varese. Morton Feldman, Ralph Shapey, David Tudor, Yehuda Yannai were some of his pupils. His music and thoughts influenced such composers as Elliot Carter, John Cage, Raoul Pleskow , and Howard Rovics . He died in New York City in 1972. In 1933 he left Berlin, arriving practically penniless in Vienna where he met, was befriended by, and studied with Anton v. Webern. He reached Palestine by way of Bucharest and remained in Palestine 1934-38, where he became head of the composition department at the Conservatory of Jerusalem. In 1938 he left Palestine and emigrated to the United States, via Brussels in 1939, becoming a citizen of the US. He became head of composition at the Music Academy and the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. In 1948 Wolpe founded the Contemporary Music School in New York City whose alumni are composers of music both classical and jazz. In 1949, he received the Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. "... in recognition of his devotion to highest musical ideals expressed in his own music with striking originality ...". In 1952, Wolpe became musical director at the experimental

Stephan Wolpe He is something of a cult figure, recently recorded fairly extensively on CD. His Enactments In contrast to the Wolpe, I found the Sessions concerto failed to engage or retain my interest; a rather academic and dour piece, which I would not seek to hear again. Wolpe can more easily be approached through his piano music, which is recorded by Geoffrey Douglas Madge on CPO 999 055-2 [mid-price] , and on Largo 5120 by the composer's daughter Katerina Wolpe (who is not quite equal to Stephan Wolpe's extreme virtuosic demands). Wolpe was born in Berlin and died in New York City. In his teens he took up music. He attended the Academy of Music in Berlin and studied composition with Paul Juon and Franz Schreker. Later he worked with Brecht and Webern. He came strongly under the influence of Schoenberg's music and quickly laid down deep foundations in dissonance and atonality. Driven, like so many others, from Germany by Nazism he came, via the then Palestine, to the USA in 1938. Wolpe's symphony was written in 1955-6 commissioned, strangely enough, by Rodgers and Hammerstein. Bernstein supported the score and arranged for its premiere with the NYPO but not under his baton. It was 1964 before the premiere happened and this was only two-thirds of the piece and it was revised for that performance. Wolpe described it as a 'structured field of pitches'. The relations of the various tones are disturbed and then restored: calm, simplicity, tension and relaxation. Harold Schonberg felt that the serial nature of the work went far beyond the second Viennese school. Roger Sessions was, on the other hand, born in the USA (Brooklyn). He too is a purveyor of dissonance although his earliest works are more tensely Stravinskian than Webern-like. The violin concerto was started in 1931 and finished in 1935. It is a dodecaphonic work in which the role of the violin's solo line is emphasised by removing the violins from the accompanying orchestra. The work had to wait until 1940 for its premiere with orchestra however its second life began with a performance by Tossy Spivakovsky in New York with the Phil conducted by Bernstein (1964). The present excellent recording was made in 1974 being close-up and very solid. If you like the Schoenberg Concerto or the Frankel you will have no trouble with appreciating this work. It is hazily Semitic, extremely romantic, occasionally Bachian, brilliantly spick and span, a ferment of melody - thorny, yes but unmistakably melodic.
