In an age of trends and fashions, movements and anti-movements, genre and sub-genres, Julia Wolfe's life and work defy easy categorization. On the surface, she seems the quintessential composer for the 90s New York-based, politically aware, and, don't forget, female and in fact her career has been appropriately meteoric. In the last few years she has sprung into the consciousness of the musical cognoscenti through a few startlingly individual and unforgettable works for orchestra, string quartet, large brass ensemble, six pianos, and chamber ensemble, and she is now rightly regarded as one of the key musical voices of her generation. Given all this, one would ordinarily expect something post-minimal or pre-millennial, something filled with fin-de-siecle hipness, something befitting the "latest thing." But when one hears her music, the catch-phrases immediately become inadequate and simplistic. Born in Philadelphia in 1958, her resume is bedecked with degrees and prizes: doctoral work at Princeton, MM from Yale where she studied with Martin Bresnick, a Fulbright Fellowship, and a generous assortment of commissions and awards from the Koussevitzky Foundation, Kronos Quartet, the Library of Congress, Cary Trust, Meet the Composer, the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, and other august bodies. Her pieces have been performed by an equally prestigious cast of characters: the San Francisco Symphony, the Bang on a Can All-Stars, the American Composers Orchestra, Piano Circus, Orkest de Volharding, the Cassatt Quartet, the Lark Quartet, and Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne. Her work for theater includes music for Anna Deveare Smith's play "House Arrest". Most recently, along with fellow Bang on a Can composers Michael Gordon and David Lang, she was commissioned by the Settembre Musica Festival in Turin, Italy to create a new comic-book opera

... co-artistic directors and founders, started Bang on a Can in 1987. Since that time they have presented more than one hundred and fifty musical events in New York City, ranging from a tribute to Morton Feldman to the only New York performances of Harry Partch's music on original instruments since Partch's death, to the commissioning and premiere of Bun-Ching Lam's Child God an opera accompanied by the Yueh Lun Shadow Puppet Theater, to the presentation of a "comic book opera" based on the cartoons and libretto of comic book artist Ben Katchor, to twelve Bang on a Can Marathons. They have founded an astonishingly successful chamber ensemble, the Bang on a Can All-Stars , and an orchestra, SPIT Orchestra
For seven years, Gordon, Lang and Wolfe were solely responsible for all administration: producing concerts, producing records, presenting performers, designing and hosting residencies, commissioning, creating special projects, arranging tours, doing marketing and publicity and fundraising. During these seven years Bang on a Can grew from a one-day event on New York's Lower East Side to a year-round organization with a national and international reputation. Now with an office staff of four and major international partnerships, Bang on a Can has continued to grow as a major force in the presentation of new music, with multiple touring productions and a renowned house ensemble.

Julia Wolfe

Born in Philadelphia, Julia Wolfe's music has been performed by a prestigious cast of characters: San Francisco Symphony, Bang on a Can All-Stars, American Composers Orchestra, Piano Circus, Newband, the California EAR Unit, Margaret Leng Tan, Orkest de Volharding, the Cassatt Quartet, the Lark Quartet and Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne. Crossing over into the worlds of theater and dance, her works have been choreographed by Eliot Feld, Doug Varone, and the Dusseldorf Ballet; she also composed music for Anna Deveare Smith's most recent play House Arrest . She was recently awarded a 1999 Academy Award by the American Academy for the Arts and Letters.
Julia Wolfe's appetite for music is wide-ranging and voracious: her enthusiasm for late Beethoven rivaled only by her passion for Led Zeppelin, or perhaps her love of traditional American folk music. These influences and many others can be heard subtly but clearly in her work, yet in no way is her work a pastiche of styles. What then marks Julia Wolfe's musical 'style'? There is not any single identifiable element but, rather, a focus on the act of making sound; sound not for its own sake but as a product of human endeavor, as a beautiful and powerful abstraction that people create, contemplate, imbue with and derive meaning from. Sound is for Julia Wolfe a metaphor for human activity in general, and she approaches it with care and attention to detail that is both masterful and highly respectful.

Artist: ZIPORYN, EVAN Title: This Is Not A Clarinet Label: CANTALOUPE Format: CD Price: Catalog #: CA 21002 "With a stunning array of slap-tongue drumming, clarinet power chords, and fuzz box-sounding multiphonics, Bang on a Can All-Star Ziporyn changes the instrument forever. An ambient/ethno/noise travelogue....The starting point for all the works are double-edged: musically, they start with acoustics, with the idea that musical substance resides in the entire overtone spectrum (the 'partials') rather than simply in the fundamentals; culturally, that the clarinet is an oral, folk instrument, whose function has always been to mediate between western and non-western music, between classical and non-classical idioms. Thus new works by contemporary American composers (Lang, Tenzer) which spring from vernacular inspirations (James Brown, Croatian vocal music, etc.) are placed next to re-workings of traditional musics from Japan, Bali, and East Africa...The pieces all mediate between worlds, thereby creating unique compositional languages."
