BIG MOLE - CHAPEL SCENE A BIRD OF PASSAGE - REPRISE: THOUSANDS OF MILES About The Musical Composer Kurt Weill and playwright Maxwell Anderson had been friends since 1938, when they had collaborated on the musical 'Knickerbocker Holiday'. Weill had emigrated from Germany only a few years earlier, after achieving success as a theatre composer in his homeland with 'Die Dreigroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera)', 'Happy End', 'Aufsteig' and 'Fall der Stadt Mahogonny (Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny)', and many other works. Under Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime the Jewish-born Weill fled from Germany; he settled briefly in Paris, then in England, moving to the United States in 1935. His first staged work in his adopted homeland was the anti-war musical 'Johnny Johnson' (1936). Reading Paton's novel soon after its publication, Weill and Anderson agreed it had musical possibilities, Weill initially feeling the piece would best benefit by having only Greek chorus-like music to comment on the plot. By the time the musical opened on Broadway, it had acquired songs designed to showcase some of the cast, such as "Big Mole," which tended to weaken Lost In The Stars, score structurally.

Mahagonny , which satirized US frontier values, caused a riot at its premiere in Leipzig. He tried to develop a new form of music theatre , using subjects that were currently important, and the simplest musical means. In 1933 he left Germany, and from 1935 was in the USA, where he wrote a number of successful scores for Broadway, among them the antiwar musical Johnny Johnson Knickerbocker Holiday (1938) (including the often covered September Song ), and

Born March 2, 1900, in Dessau, Weill studied with the composers Ferruccio Busoni and Engelbert Humperdinck. With the German poet-dramatist Bertolt Brecht he created a new form of musical theater in two satiric-didactic, musically brilliant works, both of which won international acclaim: Die Dreigroschenoper (1928; Eng. production, The Threepenny Opera, 1954), a modern paraphrase of The Beggar's Opera (1728) by the British writer John Gay; and Aufsteig und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny (1929; Eng. production, Mahagonny, 1970). Weill's works were banned as subversive in Germany, and he went with his wife, the actor Lotte Lenya (1898-1981), first to Paris (1933-35) and then to the U.S. (1935). For the Broadway musical theater he composed Knickerbocker Holiday Lady in the Dark (1941), and
