Epoch: Modern Country: Germany/USA Kurt Weill (1900-1950) Detailed Information about Picture Gallery List of Works Bibliography Introduction (born Dessau, 2 March 1900; died New York, 3 April 1950). German composer, American citizen from 1943. He was a pupil of Humperdinck, Busoni and Jarnach in Berlin (1918-23); their teaching informed his early music, including the choral Recordare (1923) and the Concerto for violin and wind (1924), the latter also influenced by Stravinsky . But the deeper influence of Stravinsky, coupled with an increased consciousness of music as a social force, led Weill to a rediscovery in the mid-l920s of tonal and vernacular elements, notably from jazz, in his cantata Der neue Orpheus and one-act stage piece Royal Palace , written between two collaborations with the expressionist playwright Georg Kaiser: Der Protagonist and . In 1926 he married the singer Lotte Lenya, who was to be the finest interpreter of his music. His next collaborator was Brecht, with whom he worked on The Threepenny Opera The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny (1929) and Happy End (1929), all of which use the corrupted, enfeebled diatonicism of commercial music as a weapon of social criticism, though paradoxically they have beome the epitome of the pre-war culture they sought to despise. Yet this is done within the context of a new harmonic consistency and focus. These works have also drawn attention from the theatre works in which Weill developed without Brecht during the early 1930s

Weill, Kurt (1900 - 1950) Kurt Weill was an important figure in German musical life during the period of the Weimar Republic. He left Germany in 1933 and later became a citizen of the United States of America, turning his musical attention to compositions for Broadway. Stage Works Weill collaborated with Bertold Brecht in Die Dreigroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera), a topical derivative of The Beggar's Opera set in contemporary Germany, with music strongly influenced by the jazz of the period. Other collaborations with Brecht included Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny (The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny). His work for Broadway is now attracting revived attention. Orchestral Music Weill arranged an instrumental suite from Die Dreigroschenopfer, the Kleine Dreigroschenmusik.

Bertolt Brecht / Kurt Weill: Die Dreigroschenoper Die am 31. August 1928 im Berliner Theater am Schiffbauerdamm uraufgeführte "Dreigroschenoper" wurde zum größten Theatererfolg der zwanziger Jahre. Bertolt Brechts Stück, in dem Bettler, Huren und Räuber auftreten, stellt die dunkle, kriminelle Seite der großstädtischen Welt dar. Trotz ihrer Ansiedlung im viktoranischen England kritisiert die "Dreigroschenoper" mit Satire und Spott die bürgerlich-kapitalistische Welt der Weimarer Republik . Having displayed musical talent early on, he became a substitute accompanist at the Dessau Court Theater during the First World War, and - after studying theory and composition with Albert Bing - enrolled at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik. Not liking the training with Engelbert Humperdinck, though, he was accepted finally into Ferruccio Busoni’s master class in composition. Home Page La vida de Kurt Weill Nace en Dessau (Alemania) el 2 de marzo de 1900 en el seno de una familia de tradición musical. A los 12 años comienza a estudiar con Albert Bing, trasladándose 6 años después a Berlín para estudiar en la Hochschule con Humperdink , Friedrich Koch y Rudolf Krasset, composición, contrapunto y dirección orquestal respectivamente. En 1920 estudia con Ferruccio Busoni y con Philipp Jarnach. En esta época consigue estrenar varias de sus obras orquestales con bastante éxito destacando Die Dreigroschenoper que le facilita el reconocimiento del público mundialmente. Sus comienzos musicales están basados en el neoclasicismo aunque también entró en contacto con el dodecafonismo de Schoenberg siempre contando con un perfecto dominio armónico. A partir de la década de los años 30, sus obras no gozan ya de la misma aceptación y en 1937 decide trasladarse a los Estados Unidos, país del que adquiere la nacionalidad en 1943. Desde ese momento compone sólo para los musicales de Broadway, lo que le valió el repudio de los musicólogos que acusaba a Weill de componer una música sin pretensiones y de escribir sólo aquello que gustaba al público de la época.
