Carl Maria Von Weber
Carl Maria von Weber has rightly been called the Father of German Romanticism, but it is often overlooked that he was a contemporary of Beethoven (1770-1827) and Schubert (1797-1828). Hence he was born much earlier than one always thinks; he is truly at the cross-roads of two musical currents. Although his output is tremendous over 300 works in the chronological and thematic catalogue of Friedrich Wilhelm Jähns (whose numbering should always be used instead of the completely misleading opus numbers) he was acknowledged only in the German-speaking countries for his masterpiece, his opera "Der Freischütz". In the rest of the world he was just the composer of three overtures (Freischütz, Euryanthe, Oberon) and at best one had heard his piano rondo "Invitation to the Waltz", especially in its ballet adaptation as Le Spectre de la Rose. In relatively recent years, however, he has also come to the fore with his many concertos and concertante works, his songs, and his piano pieces - but somehow or other his symphonies have lagged sadly behind. Weber was appointed Kapellmeister in Breslau in 1804 at the amazingly early age of seventeen-and-a-half. But even at this age he knew his own mind, as he did later in Dresden: he knew exactly how he wanted the music to be played and the orchestra to be seated - in other words, no kow-towing to dear old routine.

Birthdate
There is some confusion over his birthdate: his father said he was born on December 18 and baptized on December 20, but the record of his baptism gives November 20, which suggests he was born instead on November 18.
Family
He came from a family that had long been devoted to art. His father, Baron Franz Anton von Weber, a military officer in the service of the palgrave Karl Theodor, was an excellent violinist , and his mother once sang on the stage. His cousins, Josepha, Aloysia, Constanze and Sophie, daughters of Franz Anton's brother Fridolin, attained a high reputation as vocalists. Mozart , after having been rejected by Aloysia, married Constanze, and thus became Franz Anton's nephew by marriage. Fridolin played the violin nearly as well as his brother; and the whole family displayed exceptional talent for music.

View About History Print Summary: For middle school and up, an introduction to the early Romantic German composer. Objectives:
Background and Influence
Carl Maria von Weber's musical career, like that of Ludwig van Beethoven, came at the beginning of the Romantic era . Although it is not nearly as well-known, Weber's music, like Beethoven's, had a major influence on the course of Romantic music. The German folk opera genre that Weber established would eventually lead to the operas of Wagner; and Weber's highly ornamented, virtuoso-style piano music influenced the styles of Schumann, Liszt, and Chopin. Weber's operas were, of course, influenced by earlier opera, including Mozart's, but Weber also had a strong sense that he was creating a new, distinctly German, tradition. Weber's melodies often have the flavor of German folk song. And his librettos (texts) and plots were strongly influenced by Romantic-era German literature. His operas are stories of good and evil taken from local legends and fairy tales. The characters are of humble origin, and their fates are affected both by nature - a powerful element of mystery and danger - and the supernatural, both favorite subjects in Romantic literature.

Weber suffered from ill health a great deal as a child, and suffered with congenital disease of the hip-joint. However, his family travelled a great deal in his early life, and although this did not help his health or result in a particularly good education, it did result in him becoming familiar with the stage, as he accompanied his father through his various musical posts.

There he systematically reorganized the theatre's operations and built up the nucleus of a German company, concentrating on works, mostly French, that offered an example for the development of a German operatic tradition. But his searching reforms (extending to scenery, lighting, orchestral seating, rehearsal schedules and salaries) led to resentment. Not until his appointment as Royal Saxon Kapellmeister at Dresden (1817) and the unprecedented triumph of (1821) in Berlin and throughout Germany did his championship of a true German opera win popular support. Official opposition continued, both from the Italian opera establishment in Dresden and from Spontini in Berlin; Weber answered critics with the grand heroic opera Euryanthe (1823, Vienna). His rapidly deteriorating health and his concem to provide for his family induced him to accept the invitation to write an English opera for London; he produced
