Notes on the Program
by DAVID WRIGHT
White Heat
RANDALL WOOLF
Born August 23, 1959, in Detroit
Now living in Brooklyn Mr. Woolf has supplied the following comments about his orchestral piece White Heat: When I began to compose White Heat, I suddenly became aware of the stubborn antiquity of the orchestra and its resistance to the world that surrounds it, to the fast pace and sharp edges of contemporary experience. The first few seconds of any orchestral piece to me suggest immediately "music from another time and place, music from somewhere else." And yet I can't help, when writing for this grand old instrument, being just as clearly from my own time and place. The piece became a confrontation of these tendencies, a constant mismatch of abrupt and racing modernity with soft sepia-toned nostalgia. As the piece progresses, refusing to settle down, alternately ingratiating and combative, the overall effect becomes a synthesis of these opposites: a restless burning meditation on old things, casting each new memory aside with the same intensity that drives the search for the next recollection. In the end, it all adds up to nothing more than a fading image of repose, and a residue of feeling always not quite in the right place. One is left with the sensation that none of these transient states can ever really take hold, and that the only thing certain to remain is the constant need for change and stimulation.

Tony Wagner to Lead Community Forum September 9, 2003
Port Angeles, Wash. – What do good schools, where all children learn, look like? How do they involve parents and motivate students and teachers to do their best? How do schools ensure that all children reach high standards? As the Port Angeles School District continues the complex task of school improvement, these questions and others will become part of a community dialogue about how to enact meaningful school change. One such discussion will take place during a community forum scheduled for Thursday, September 25, from 6:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. in the Raymond Carver Room of the Port Angeles Public Library. Members of the public are welcome and encouraged to attend. “It is a tremendous honor and an enormous privilege to have Tony Wagner in our district,” said Dr. Gary Cohn, superintendent of the Port Angeles School District. “Dr. Wagner is a nationally-renowned consultant and leader in school reinvention. He believes that entire communities must be involved in identifying the problems in education and in defining the solutions for their schools. Dr. Wagner clarifies the need for school change in a way that illustrates the importance of long-term cooperation among school and policy leaders, teachers, the community, and students and their curricula. I look forward to this forum as an opportunity to reinvigorate the discussion on why change is needed in how we educate children.”
Cohn added that the work the district is doing also relates directly to the state standards of academic achievement set by Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Terry Bergeson.

This recording, for me, is the find of the year. (Literally, as well as figuratively. Browsing in Virgin's megastore in Chicago, I came across it shelved with Richard Wagner.) Until now I had never heard a note by either composer. Wagner won the Pulitzer Prize last year, for this work, but I see only one previous recording listed for her in Schwann. The work by Ruders, a Dane, was performed at the Proms, and he has a number of other recordings, including two symphonies, a concerto for violin and one for piano. His opera, The Handmaid's Tale was recorded for release this year. Both works on this disc are exciting and repay repeated listening. The partial origins of each would be more nakedly revealed if they had been named Music for Strings, Percussion and Flute, and Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell, though I would not want to overstress this; both are fresh and inventive. Wagner openly admits that Bartok's work was a model with respect to the instrumentation (as well as Bernstein's Serenade); she did not want to overwhelm the flute with brass or other woodwinds. In Ruders' case, the work was commissioned on the occasion of the tercentenary of Purcell's death and the fiftieth anniversary of Britten's young Person's Guide. Ruders felt that he might "just as well jump out the window" as choose the theme Britten did; the one he selected was the "fast, swinging, Ho-Ho-Ho witches ' chorus" from the beginning of Act II of Dido and Anaeas.

    Modern Composers

September 19, 2000 [Music of] Melinda Wagner [and] Poul Ruders. Melinda Wagner, Concerto for Flute, Strings and Percussion, Westchester Philharmonic, Mark Mandarano, conductor; Poul Ruders, Concerto in Pieces (Purcell Variations), BBC Symphony Orchestra, Andrew Davis, conductor. (Bridge, CD # 9098) 2000. Why haven't women composers written more high-quality music in the past forty years? (Hint: It's a trick question.) The real question is of course why women composers are so under-represented among recipients of major awards and commissions in the past forty years. Melinda Wagner, recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for music in 1999, is only the fourth woman to receive a Pulitzer for music in the 56-year history of the award. (Pulitzer awards for literature began in 1893, but the music award began in 1943.) As in many other areas, women are slowly gaining more recognition as composers, but it seems still to be more difficult for women composers to find outlets for their work. Wagner received the Pulitzer for the work featured on this new recording from Bridge Records the Concerto for Flute, Strings and Percussion, written for Paul Lustig Dunkel, who performs on the recording. The album also includes Poul Ruders' Concerto in Pieces, subtitled Purcell Variations for Orchestra.
