About the RVW Society Honorary President Mrs Ursula Vaughan Williams Honorary Vice President Michael Kennedy CBE Chairman Stephen Connock MBE Membership Secretary David Betts For general information or to inform us of concerts and news contact Dr Robin Barber The RVW Society is a Registered Charity Number 1017175 With such a profoundly productive life, over such a long period of time, allied to the many and various interests held by Vaughan Williams (in hymnal, folk music, film music and classical music fields), it was inevitable that a temporary period of neglect followed his death in 1958. It was as late as 1994 that a Society was founded by Stephen Connock, John Bishop and Robin Barber. Since its inception the Society has grown quickly and nearly 800 members have joined worldwide. To date we have been influential in two performances of all nine symphonies in the concert hall, an important opera festival (The Vision of Albion) and for stimulating world premier recordings of lesser known works, such as The Death of Tintagiles, A Cotswold Romance

He wrote nine symphonies between and as well as numerous other works including chamber music opera , choral music and film scores Born in Down Ampney Gloucestershire , where his father Arthur Vaughan Williams was rector, he was taken by his mother to live with her family at Leith Hill Place, the Wedgwood family home in the North Downs, after his father's early death in 1875. The other connection was with the Darwins, Charles Darwin being a great-uncle. Ralph (pronounced "rafe") was therefore born into the privileged intellectual upper middle class, but never took it for granted and worked tirelessly all his life for the democratic and egalitarian ideals he believed in. Jahrhunderts hin, den er vollzogen hat. Als Sohn eines Geistlichen war er in den Traditionen der Kirchen- und Chormusik bestens bewandert. Seine Studien bei Parry und Stanford am Royal College of Music waren durchaus solide, und alles andere als auf Neues gerichtet, und darauffolgender Unterricht bei Max Bruch in Deutschland konnte eigentlich auch nur wieder einen englisch-deutschen Komponisten aus ihm machen. Er war gehemmt und unglücklich, weil er wußte, was er sagen wollte, aber nicht wie. Er war bereits um die Dreißig, als er auf die English Folk Music Society aufmerksam wurde, die ein paar Jahre zuvor von Sharp gegründet worden war. Educated at Charterhouse and Cambridge, he studied at the Royal College of Music, at Cambridge, and later in Paris with Maurice Ravel. Muir Mathieson invited him to write the first of his eleven film scores, 49th Parallel (d. Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger, 1941), which coincided with the start of the British government's wartime policy to use cinema to rouse the nation's spirits. He was pre-eminent among the many big names of concert music who were keen to get involved in this populist cause at such a decisive stage in the conflict, especially where this involved documentary or semi-documentary approaches to the subjects of war, sacrifice and noble effort. Vaughan Williams' film scores tend to ignore narrative and visual detail, but intensify the drama with through-composed music, which was sometimes written before filming had begun. This was the case with Scott of the Antarctic (d. Charles Frend, 1948), of which Ernest Irving said (1948), "[it is] the function of music to bring to the screen the hidden and spiritual illustration into which the camera... is unable to peer".
