Ralph Vaughan Williams
Vaughan Williams received his training from Hubert Parry and Charles Villiers Stanford, both composers influenced by Brahms. Early Vaughan Williams works have their Brahmsian (and Wagnerian) moments, but in the early music that has survived, we hear something absolutely original and unique. Vaughan Williams became enthralled with the English folk song (he was a major collector). Vaughan Williams fortunately could absorb from diverse sources including Stravinsky, Brahms, Parry, Debussy, Ravel, Bach, Byrd, and Hindemith and yet remain absolutely and recognizably himself. After a brief flirtation with French impressionism ("In the Fen Country," String Quartet No. 1) and some study with Ravel (who called him "the only pupil who does not write my music"), he hit the ground running with his incidental music to Aristophanes's "The Wasps," the song cycle "On Wenlock Edge," and the classic "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis." These are, to my mind, the first works in which we see the "real" Vaughan Williams. From here on, you can't mistake the voice. Vaughan Williams composed extensively in almost every genre but chamber music. He is one of the great setters of English poetry, and vocal music comprises a large part of his output. Major works include "Five Mystical Songs," "Merciless Beauty," "Sancta Civitas," "Serenade to Music," "Hodie," "10 Blake Songs," and "Dona nobis pacem." He wrote several operas, not one of which has kept the stage: "Hugh the Drover," "The Poisoned Kiss," "Riders to the Sea," "Sir John in Love," and "Pilgrim's Progress." The last three contain magnificent music. "Sir John" in particular is one great tune after another. There's no accounting for taste.

    Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)
Detailed Information about Introduction (born Down Ampney, 12 October 1872; died London, 26 August 1958). He studied with Parry, Wood and Stanford at the RCM and Cambridge, then had further lessons with Bruch in Berlin (1897) and Ravel in Paris (1908). It was only after this that he began to write with sureness in larger forms, even though some songs had had success in the early years of the century. That success, and the ensuring maturity, depended very much on his work with folksong, which he had begun to collect in 1903; this opened the way to the lyrical freshness of the Housman cycle On Wenlock Edge and to the modally inflected tonality of the symphonic cycle that began with A Sea Symphony . But he learnt the same lessons in studying earlier English music in his task as editor of the English Hymnal (1906) - work which bore fruit in his Fantasia on a Theme by Tallis for strings, whose majestic unrelated consonances provided a new sound and a new way into large-scale form. The sound, with its sense of natural objects seen in a transfigured light, placed Vaughan Williams in a powerfully English visionary tradition, and made very plausible his association of his music with Blake (in the ballet Job ) and Bunyan (in the opera The Pilgrim's Progress ). Menwhile the new command of form made possible a first orchestral symphony

    Discovering Vaughan Williams
Despite writing some truly magnificent music, most classical music listeners have heard very little of Vaughan Williams' varied output. This page assumes no knowledge of Vaughan Williams' music, and introduces several of his most accessable works, as well as some lesser known ones to explore. More information can be found in the List of Works section, which includes details of some recommended recordings.
Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis
My personal favourite. This piece is scored for double string orchestra and a string quartet, and was written with the ascoutics of a cathedral in mind. As a piece of music, it is both beautiful and haunting. Impossible to do it justice with words; treat yourself and listen to it. Click here to view the listener's guide to the Tallis Fantasia.
    The Lark Ascending
A tone poem of incredible beauty. Written for solo violin and small orchestra, the soloist depicts a lark soaring above a pastoral scene. Rightly one of Vaughan Williams' best loved and most often heard works.
    Serenade to Music
One of the finest pieces of choral music, using words from a scene in Act 5 of Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice". It exists in many forms, having been rearranged by the composer, the best being the original format with 16 vocalists and orchestra.
