previous contents next Everything Must Go Boston, famous for having declared itself the Hub of the Solar System, the Athens of America and, more recently, the Capital of the North Atlantic Rim, has been feeling a little glum this week about the loss of its last big locally-headquartered bank. John Hancock, the last major company of its once-great insurance industry, sold out in September to Canadians. New Yorkers took over the city's biggest newspaper, The Boston Globe, a decade ago. And now an agglomeration of New England banks that includes a once-distinctive lender with roots going back to 1784 last week agreed to be acquired by a much bigger banking company based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Even the sainted old Atlantic Monthly may be on the brink of being moved by its owner to Washington, D.C. So for those of us who live here, and those who merely wish to visit, it's worth thinking back briefly to the days when Boston was the global capital of refrigeration.

Amerikaans componist en pianist Tudor studeerde bij H. William Hawke (orgel, theorie), Irma Wolpe Rademacher (piano) en Stefan Wolpe (compositie).
Zijn eerste professionele activiteit was de uitvoering van Pierre Boulez Deuxième Sonate pour Piano , op orgel (New York,1950).
Tudor was een pleitbezorger van de avant-garde, en met name John Cage , wiens werk (vaak voor hem geschreven) hij gedurende een lange periode uitvoerde.
Ook voerde hij werk uit (vaak als eerste) van o.a. Earle Brown Sylvano Bussotti Morton Feldman Karlheinz Stockhausen , Christian Wolff, Stefan Wolpe , en La Monte Young.
Na ca. 1960 legde hij zich toe op het componeren van voornamelijk elektronische muziek.
In de jaren daarna ontstonden vele live uitvoeringen, vaak in samenwerking met andere kunstenaars, met elektronische muziek (vaak met door hemzelf ontwikkelde apparatuur), lichteffecten, laser, dans, theater, televisie ect.
Hij behoorde tot de leidende figuren en volgens sommigen een legende.

David Tudor
David Eugene Tudor January 20 August 13 ) was a pianist and composer of experimental music. Tudor was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania . He studied piano with Stefan Wolpe and became known as one of the leading performers of avant garde piano music. He gave the first American performance of the Piano Sonata No. 2 by Pierre Boulez in 1950, and a European tour in 1954 greatly enhanced his reputation. Karlheinz Stockhausen dedicated his (1955) to Tudor. Tudor also gave early performances of works by Morton Feldman and La Monte Young The composer with which Tudor is particularly associated is John Cage . He gave the premiere of Cage's Music of Changes Concerto For Piano and Orchestra and the notorious . Cage said that many of his pieces were written either specifically for Tudor to perform or with him in mind. The two worked closely together on many of Cage's pieces, both works for piano and electronic pieces. Upon Cage's death in , Tudor took over as music director of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. After a stint teaching at Darmstadt from 1956 to 1961, Tudor began to wind up his activities as a pianist to concentrate on composing. He wrote mostly electronic works, many commissioned by Merce Cunningham, and often with elaborate lighting and stage designs. One piece

INTERVIEW WITH DAVID TUDOR An Interview with David Tudor, for the Rutgers Oral History Archives of World War II. Interview conducted by G. Dr. David Tudor, RC '40 asked that the following material appear before his transcript. This account originally appeared in Dr. Tudor's pre-interview survey. Our lonely troop ship with 1000 men left San Francisco late one afternoon in August of 1945. No one was permitted on deck until nighttime. I was assigned a cot directly under the quarter inch steel deck of the fantail. The sun made the deck so hot one could hardly stand it and were glad to get a breath of fresh air. I entered the Veterinary School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1947 and joined the Rutgers staff in 1951.

L'ART de l'impossible David Tudor était incontestablement une des personnalités mondiales les plus importantes de l'interprétation de la musique nouvelle de la seconde moitié de ce siècle. Il était guidé par son instinct pour l'exploration et l'expérimentation, mais il a renoncé à identifier un but spécifique à son oeuvre. Comme un chat, il a exploré pour l'amour de l'exploration, espérant trouver ce qui n'existait pas même en rêve. Tudor a exploré tout au long de sa vie, et lorsqu'il sentait qu'une région était complètement parcourue il se déplaçait dans une autre. Il a couvert ainsi beaucoup de territoire, ce qui rend la question : "Qu'a fait David Tudor?" difficile à répondre. FLUORESCENT SOUND BANDONEON! Pendant cette période, Tudor a commencé à apprendre le bandonéon, une "boîte à presser" d'origine argentine avec une disposition de clavier très complexe (contrairement à la disposition du clavier du piano sur l'accordéon). Mauricio Kagel a amené Tudor à l'instrument et ils ont travaillé ensemble à Pandora's Box de Kagel. MUSICWORKS Martin Bartlett and David Tudor In this issue we have articles about two composers who pioneered the use of electronic equipment in live performance, Martin Bartlett and David Tudor. Both composers built their own equipment and performed with it, developing new resources in sound. In discussing the accomplishments of Bartlett and Tudor, and their influence on others, these articles raise questions about the implications of new forms of music-making, and about the cultural context in which contemporary musical activity takes place. What is the nature of our inheritance as listeners in so culturally diverse a context as exists today? Our musical heritage no longer consists of simply passing traditions from generation to generation with young artists accepting training from established artists. Our influences have broadened through time and space to include many different world cultures and historical periods. What is the nature of the legacy left by artists whose musical activity expanded into new areas? To hear their music we often have to rely primarily on documentary "live" recordings made without careful attention to technical quality. We do not have many traditional scores that can be performed by instrumental musicians. And yet these composers have provided fertile ground for other artists to work from.
