He studied piano with Stefan Wolpe and became known as one of the leading performers of avant garde piano music. He gave the first American performance of the Piano Sonata No. 2 by Pierre Boulez in 1950, and a European tour in 1954 greatly enhanced his reputation. Karlheinz Stockhausen dedicated his (1955) to Tudor. Tudor also gave early performances of works by Morton Feldman and La Monte Young The composer with which Tudor is particularly associated is John Cage . He gave the premiere of Cage's Music of Changes Concerto For Piano and Orchestra and the notorious . Cage said that many of his pieces were written either specifically for Tudor to perform or with him in mind. He was as "the" foremost avant-garde pianist of the 1950s and 60s - the great piano works of that period were in his repertoire, with countless premieres and compositions written for him by Brown, Cage, Stockhausen, Bussotti, Feldman, La Monte Young, Wolff, Wolpe and others. Tudor gradually traded in the keyboard to turn his attention towards composing for live electronics. His influence and effect on electronic music is as great as it was towards the piano. Tudor became an integral musician for The Merce Cunningham Dance Company with John Cage in the 1950s, a career which encompassed both aspects of his musicianship. RAINFOREST is one of Tudor's landmark works. It exists in 4 possible performance versions, 2 of which are on the present CD and issued commercially for the first time.

Músico autodidacta, desde joven se sintió atraído por la música dodecafónica occidental y el serialismo. Compuso música orquestal y de cámara, con abundante presencia de instrumentos tradicionales japoneses. Como compositor de bandas sonoras trabajó en films de Nagisha Oshima y Akira Kurosawa, entre otros. De sus obras de música electroacústica destacan Static Relief Ki-Sora-Tori (1956), y Water Music Tangerine Dream Banda fundada en 1967 en Berlín occidental (Alemania), por Edgar Froese.
