Home Page Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky Life Tchaikovsky was one of the earlier students of the St. Petersburg Conservatory established by Anton Rubinstein , completing his studies there to become a member of the teaching staff at the similar institution established in Moscow by Anton Rubinstein 's brother Nikolay. He was able to withdraw from teaching when a rich widow, Nadezhda von Meck, offered him financial support which continued for much of his life, although, according to the original conditions of the pension, they never met. His music is thoroughly Russian in character, but, although he was influenced by Balakirev and the ideals of the Five Russian nationalist composers (with Cui Borodine Rimski-Korsakov and Moussorgski ), he may be seen as belonging rather to the more international school of composition fostered by the Conservatories that Balakirev so much deplored. It was completed in 1885, the year after the opera Mazeppa, and is one of his most highly charged and theatrical orchestral works. Yet he had to be convinced in the first place that the subject matter was appropriate. The composer Balakirev had suggested to Tchaikovsky in 1881 that the hero of Byron's poem - the epitome of the Romantic outsider - would be a suitable subject for a programmatic orchestral work, but it was only when Balakirev presented him with a filleted selection of the poem's main ideas that Tchaikovsky agreed it was ideal material.

Pjotr (Peter) Iljitsj Tchaikovsky P eter Tchaikovsky werd geboren te Kamsko-Votkinsk in het graafschap Vyatka in Rusland op 25 april (7 mei) 1840 en hij overleed te Sint-Petersburg op 25 oktober (6 november) 1893. P eter Tchaikovsky was een Russische componist en de zoon van een mijndirecteur. Hij was het tweede kind in een gezin met vijf zonen en een dochter. Hij ging in 1850 naar de rechtsschool in Sint Petersburg en studeerde tegelijkertijd piano bij R. Kündiger. De scheiding van zijn moeder, die hij verafgoodde, en van het ouderlijke huis in de Oeral leidde tot meerdere aanvallen van zware depressies, waarmee hij zijn gehele verdere leven te kampen had. In 1859 werd hij eerste secretaris bij het ministerie van Justitie, maar drie jaar later besloot hij zich geheel aan de muziek te wijden. I n 1863 werd hij leerling aan het conservatorium van St.-Petersburg, waar hij les kreeg van onder meer N. Zaremba voor compositie en A. Rubinstein voor instrumentatie. Hij sloot zijn studie af met de compositie van Schillers Ode an die Freude. Vlak voor zijn eindexamen, in november 1865, werd hij door Nicolai Rubinstein tot hoofdleraar voor harmonie aan het Moskouse conservatorium benoemd, een functie die hij tot 1877 bekleedde. S.I. Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) Russian composer, the foremost of the 19th century. From this period also date his operas Undine (1869) and The Oprichnik (1872); the Piano Concerto no. 1 in B-flat Minor (1875); the symphonies no. 1 (called 'Winter Dreams,' 1868), no. 2 (1873; subsequently revised and titled 'Little Russian'), and no. 3 (1875); and the overture Romeo and Juliet (1870; revised in 1870 and 1880). The B-flat piano concerto was dedicated originally to Nicholas Rubinstein, who pronounced it unplayable. Deeply injured, Tchaikovsky made extensive alterations in the work and reinscribed it to German pianist Hans Guido von Bülow, who rewarded the courtesy by performing the concerto on the occasion of his first concert tour of the United States (1875-1876). Rubinstein later acknowledged the merit of the revised composition and made it a part of his own repertoire. Well known for its dramatic first movement and skillful use of folklike melodies, it subsequently became one of the most frequently played of all piano concertos.
